  • In this video, Greg and Lars (Greg's oldest son) mill a huge and heavy log. It doesn't end up giving two posts, but it does produce a lot of useful lumber that we need on the cut list for the barn. Sometimes, you look at a log and think that will make a great post, but really it ends up giving you that post and so much more. It's always so cool to take a log and turn it into lumber, knowing you are going to build a barn with it.
Did you know we are building a barn out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill?! If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the slab this summer and are on a pause while we mill all of the lumber needed for the barn build. We have A LOT of milling in our future.
Here is the video where we share our barn plans. Our plans are from ‪@BarnGeek‬ and we are excited to build one of his beautiful barns!
    • Why Do We Think WE CAN...
***We are so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!
Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
    3 posts in the front
    4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
    Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
    It will have a 3 :12 pitch
    Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
We have shared the entire build!

Nice lumber from that log. Slab rack and burn barrel are keeping your site nice and organized.

Howdy y’all- nice sawin. Just wondering if you are going to do a traditional timber frame build with mortice and tenons? Hope y’all have a very blessed new year. God bless

Hi, Paul, I don’t have the skill set that you have- I need a few more gray hairs in my beard 😁
I just don’t have the time / team for it. So, we are going to use structural screws and metal plates with through bolts. Should be doable - I hope! Thanks so much for watching! 😊

We are continuing to mill logs, even on Christmas Eve! Don't worry, we stopped before it was dark, so we were able to spend some great family time with Erik and his family (Beth's sister is married to Erik) that evening! It sure was nice to have Lars, his wife Chelsey and Karlyn here for the holidays! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and Holiday season! Hope you enjoy this video! 😊

Greg, it was nice to see you make good use of that big fat log by cutting the beam along with 1x and 2x boards. Glad your family all gathered together to celebrate Christmas. Happy New Year and blessings to all of you.

Happy New Year, Bill! It’s always fun to see what lumber can come from a log! One log at a time. Thanks for watching! 😊

Glad you are making progress on the biggest posts. Will you have to purchase some more logs to get all of the posts that you need?
The rack for the slabs looked like it was a winner. Glad that someone is getting use out of the slabs. Having the slab rack really helps to keep the area clean
Hope you and your family all had a wonderful Christmas and hoping for a great New Year for all
    Thanks for bringing us along

Hi, Mike! I have one more log to mill before I dig into our Doug fir log deck. I’m going to organize by length and diameter. That should give me a good idea of what I have and what I need. There are some blow down Doug fir on my in-laws ground that I just need to get near the sawmill- my guess is there are a couple of long loads up there. Problem is time !!!
We had a wonderful Christmas- love having our kids there and of course we had a slew of family dinners to attend.
Hope you and your family had a great Christmas/ New Year! 😊

You may consider putting your slab rack on legs to bring the bottom of the rack up to waist level to ease all the bending you have to do. Lifelong back problems from repetitive lifting/setting down with poor body mechanics is the real deal.

Hi, Chris, I have a love/hate relationship with that slab rack. Holds a lot of slabs - problem is that you have to empty that thing. I spent a couple of hours yesterday sawing the throwing 16” pieces into a trailer when really I wanted to be milling.
I have a guy that wants the slabs - as is. So that should help with the time commitment of dealing with them.
As far as repetitive motion injuries- I appreciate your input and thoughts. I am hot and heavy milling but after this build is over this will return to a hobby mill with moderate to low use. 😁

@@ourdreaminthewoods Lots of sawyers use black high tensile steel bands around their slabs in a slab rack and then a ratcheting tensioning hand tool is place on the bands to tighten them up and a steel clip is crimped in place to prevent loosening. Then the entire banded slab pile can be lifted out of your slab rack with your skid steer with the forks. The skid steer can load your customers trailer as well, personally I would let him cut up his own slabs especially if he is getting the slabs for free.
Steel bands can make it neat and tidy to group a bunch of lumber together for delivery, or if you do any sawing for money putting together a customer order and loading it with ease

Hi, Chris! That’s a great suggestion! I put a strap on the ground and put some 4x4’s down to stack the slabs on with idea of using the straps to move/load them at one time. So far it’s working ok but the slab rack works a lot better. The metal strapping would be great but not sure I want to invest in it at this point. I am going to be milling heavy for the next several months but at some point it will return an occasional use hobby mill.
Keep the comments coming- appreciate it! 😃
