I see a “grail” item as a pinnacle item. In other words, when I achieve a particular grail I see that as the end of the journey. A grail, once achieved, means there is no better option. I have achieved a few EDC grails in my time and once I found that grail item I stopped looking. I was never going to find anything better and I discontinue the search. No point in looking for something when I have the ultimate or perfect (to me) item. It’s always a little bittersweet. I enjoy the search so much. But once grail status is achieved I don’t get to keep looking. If I did, it would imply what I’d found wasn’t the grail.

I feel that, I've only hit my grain Hankie.. and I like the material soo much I tracked it down and have been trying to find a maker who will make laptop sleeves n stuff of that nature. A grail is a thing that ends of discussion of an item. like you said, why look for better then you have the best. I dont like to pollute my mind with looking for an even better of the best thing in my mind

I agree to a point. I found my knife version but I still actively look up new stuff. Im more like Jeremy from Secret of NIMH: I like sparklies. And now that I have my own, I can enjoy the new stuff as it comes out. I realized I get more enjoyment from the discovery than I do from the acquisition.

As someone that's unfortunately suffered from some serious mental health issues over recent years, I have decided that, as my health continues to improve, I am aiming to make a trip from the UK to the States, in order to pay a visit to SMKW. I will be able to see (and buy!) some of the knives that I've wanted for a long time, but could never obtain here in England. The planning (and hopefully achieving) of this goal, is giving me a real sense of there being a light at the end of the tunnel. So, for me, the Grail will be the act of buying the knives, rather than the actual knives themselves.
Keep up the good work Taylor.
    Cheers!

That place is a lot of fun! The only thing that made me sad is that not all the employees are knife nuts. So if you're the type to want to chat up the clerk at each brands section you'll end up being a little disappointed with that but the store itself is amazing. It's a glorious place for knife people of all walks of life.
Also, Tennessee is a beautiful state with a lot to do. Hope you get to make the trip. It would be a lot of fun.

My Grail is a AMG E 63 S Wagon zero to 60 in 3.3 seconds. Gets you to Costco really really fast. Also early retirement 45? 55? unsure this video has stimulated me into Planting a Flag on an age. Ive already hit my EDC gear, I have my sweet simple wallet, my Civivi Odium Dam and wood scales, a We Baculus pen and I dont really need anything else as an acupuncturist.

    Two points:
(1). Things disappoint in exact proportion to the amount of money you spend on them: wives, watches, knife, cars, houses etc.
(2). "It's better to want what you have than have what you want." Nine times out of ten your grail is right in front of you: Your wife, your watch, your car, your knife, your house. The trick is to appreciate them. Cheers from England.

  • @Robert-lu3wc
    @Robert-lu3wc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

Yeah, that's kind of the problem with "grail" edc's if you are super into watches. Pretty much everything else like wallets, pens, knives, etc are realistically attainable. I believe anyone could get obtain their "grails" with enough time if they truly wanted it, but watches are a whole other rabbit hole. You could work towards a grail Patek or rare Rolex for most of your life but probably never attain it because it just costs an ungodly amount of money for the average person to ever remotely justify buying one, not to mention they will continue to increase in price faster than anything else which only compounds the issue. If you aren't into watches at all (which applies to most people to be fair), consider that a huge blessing in disguise.

Lol so true, I have a Spyderco's Amalgam, an to me this is a grail knife. Yes I can afford something more exspensive. I just got lucky in my thinking, like I have a Timex I got at a yard sale and wouldn't trade it door a million bucks because of the memory of getting it with the very special person I was with. Thanks an good luck on whatever your dreams may be.

The only thing I would pursue as a “grail” is a watch; I’m just too practical with the other stuff. There are a few that I really want: Tudor BB36 & Rolex Explorer 36mm to name a couple. My grail would probably be a 1973 Rolex GMT-Master…honestly, though, I’ll probably never get one.

First up is probably the most likely is a custom Gavko Nurse, secondly is a hard to find Spyderco Payson, and thirdly is an impossible knife but a mini Benchmade Anthem (Yes a knife that doesn't even exist) my two old grails were a Shiro Neon and a Quiet Carry Drift. Which I own both now and love.

This might sound a little silly grail is the perfect pill holder key fob. I have in my mind the perfect one, but no manufacturers make what I want. Basically I want a three chamber fob, but I want one that is more compact that is more compact than anything else on the market. This is a great question. I don't think I have any grails for the first several items, though the Micro Arcadian in titanium is pretty cool looking. For my knife, it's definitely a custom by Pena. Pena's custom knives are beautiful works of art and I love the front flipper action of the one x-series I own, so I already know I'd enjoy using it. For watches, honestly, most luxury watch brands don't have a lot that appeals to me. I'm a big fan of microbrands right now, which are mostly pretty affordable. So, I haven't researched the 3k and up range very much. I would like to eventually own a very nice hand-wind mechanical from one of the companies with a long history, but I have yet to find one that appeals to me. I guess that counts as a grail because I'm searching for just the right watch, I just don't know what my grail looks like. lol

    great list of grails. 👌🏽
Knives: not really a grail, just haven’t yet broken $1k barrier, “yet”. Rockstead Higo II (black blade, burgundy wood-Micarta scales). Custom Nirvana also (but I’d settle for the Spyderco), and a Jared Oeser custom front flipper.
Watches: got my first grail, Omega Co-Axial Moonwatch Numbered Edition (limited, automatic, sapphire case-back). Got lucky number 7 at Christie’s auction house a few years ago, for $4.5k (valued $25k). Love that it looks like a regular moon watch (albeit bigger, 45mm vs 42mm). I just wanted an automatic version of the Moonwatch w/ sapphire caseback, but got lucky.
Others aren’t really grails, just next on my list: IWC Portuguese Chronograph ($5k, in steel, white face, rose gold numbers, black leather strap), Sinn EZM 1.1 Mission Timer ($4.8k new, $6k used as it’s rarely produced, SZ01 movement, two pusher chronograph w/ “no subdails” … cleanest chronograph I’ve seen), Tag Heuer Carrera CBG2A50 ($7.4k, skeletonized, mostly black w/ a rose gold accents, not the mostly rose gold one).
The only real grails that I don’t expect to get are the Tag Heuer Carrera CAR5A5U ($18-20k, looks almost the same but is the tourbillion version, I’d get this version instead), and Patek Philippe Nautilus 5726 ($100k+, w/ moon phases and calendar).
Flashlight: Okluma DC1, in aluminum or titanium. It’s only a grail to find it reasonably priced, lol. Not in a rush to spend $200+ on a flashlight. $150 (aluminum), $250 (titanium) is reasonable.
Pens: already have my grails, including Montblanc “M Pen” by Apple Watch designer Marc Newson. But maybe I’ll get a Schon Design faceted “Pocket Six” pen in copper, and then black-antique it (leaving only copper on the facets edges exposed). I’d love a zirc pen, but none spoke to me yet. 🤷🏽‍♂️

My Grail would be all custom everything and then my quest would be over.

It's possible to get something in the rough ballpark of that watch by getting a quartz watch and filling it with mineral oil yourself. Of course, you'd have to find a watch you like the look of; and if you want it to be analog, you'll probably have to spend some time looking for an oil with an appropriate viscosity. The thicker the oil is, the more the movement's going to struggle and drain power.

I've had my wallet for the last 15+ years. Cost me about $20-30. It's not the prettiest thing in the world, don't need anything more than what it provides for me. I don't care too many bills, I don't use cards, so it's not a "grandfather" wallet. As for pens? If regularly buy packs of Pilot fine tip technical pens, and call it a day. Flashlight? I live in Florida, so I haven't found that light that will survive both an urban emergency and is water resistant. Mag-Lite hasn't really failed me yet though. But it definitely is far from a good Flashlight. As for the knife. I haven't really seen anything that catches my attention enough to want it. I'm about as practical as they come.

This is the first time I’ve heard of "grail" in reference to EDC. In my head, I’d think of a grail item that only exists in the form of a wishlist of features that mold perfectly with your lifestyle. Something that may not actually exist in the real world. Maybe it hasn’t been invented or produced yet. Maybe it is not physically possible to exist. Maybe it exists but has terrible marketing. Maybe it is a 1-star item not worth talking about because for 99.9% of the world it is useless, but for you specifically, it would be perfect.

  • @LexingtonDaniel

Going back to the origin with "The Holy Grail," the core of it's value can't be monetary... The pauper's cup. It has to have a spiritual provenance... That held Jesus' blood.
It isn't about how much you spend on it, or even the quest or rarity. It has to have an inherent value that comes from its history.
For me it would have to be something like Peter Green's Les Paul or B.B. King's actual Lucille. I can see something like a watch that belonged to Churchill or was on the Titanic. Maybe a knife that was carried by Crockett or the pen Twain used to write Huck Finn... It's the spirit imbued unto the item by where it was or who possessed it previously.

    • @mda187
      @mda187 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah agree with this 100%. It doesn't have to be expensive.. or cost anything at all.. it's something you work toward just like King Arthur worked and quested to find the original grail. Love the channel... but when all these "grail" picks are being equated to monetary value, it just seems wrong.

I have trouble with "Grails" For the mostpart... I struggle with anything of those kinds of crazy prices... Probably closest I have to one... would prob be a knife... and unless making a 110% custom piece (Definitely impossible shy of winning lottery) Prob closest I have to a "Grail" Would be the Spyderco Valloton SubHilt. Or a Protech Malibu. (Button Lock flipper... auto are illegal here.)
I have a shoestring budget... so anything more insane kind of scares me... cos it'd be nigh impossible to ever get again.

As far as grail knives go, I have them, but I want custom work done at some point in life. Kershaw 2420ST and the smaller variant 2410ST are rare and honestly I’ll be surprised if anyone knows what I’m talking about. I want the grips in both changed. Father of Pearl for the 2420ST and Mother of Pearl for the 2410ST. The tip of the 2420ST was broken some years ago by my siblings (still no one has confessed their sin. Lol) and I did send it in to Kershaw and they shortened and sharpened it. That’s cool, but now I want to get a carbon steel blade made specifically to fit it perfectly. Last customization is changing the good ole thumb studs to glowing studs

I’ll use the knife just to phrase it, but it applies to everything else. To me, there are “want knives”, “dream knives” and “grail knives”. The want knives are those that require the leaset amount of effort and money to obtain, in my case, coole be a Civiv, a We, Benchmade and so on. The dream knives are those that will have you searching for them, and saving up a solid amount, like a Reate, Chris Reeve, Hinderer, etc. And the grails, are those that are almost or completely impossible to obtain, due to scarcity and price, like a Ron Best or an RJ Martin.

a grail to me is a piece of kit that meets my needs so perfectly i can stop looking further if i wanted to, that every subsequent similar kit is a nice-to-have, not this-is-my-soulmate. like, if i found and got my grail knife, every other knife i subsequently add to my collection is 'oh this is a nice addition to the collection', but it is not The Knife. it is not the knife that makes you feel like something is OFF if you hold a different knife in your hand.
and then there's the grail tool, the grail wallet/organizer, grail light... you get the idea

So, I'm only about two years into the EDC community, so I'm actually acquiring some things that were previously grails for me. My grail wallet (having previously never spent more than $20 on a wallet) is on its way as we speak, OS leather Hubei 2.0. I just recently purchased what had been my grail knife, a Large Sebenza 31 with black Micarta inlay. I think now my grail knife would be a Jared Oeser custom. Watches, on the other hand, I've been collecting for a long time and my grail is an A. Lange & Sohne Grand Lange 1. I'm not sure the reference number, but the specific one that's my grail goes for roughly $80k. Nowhere near my price range, but always been my dream to own one.

I'm pretty well terrified to carry it, cause I'm afraid it'll get stolen/lost. For me, a Spyderco Szabofly would be a grail knife. It's not excessively expensive necessarily but is discontinued which leads to a certain level of rarity and demand. I think it is one of the meanest yet beautiful blade shapes but am not able to justify the purchase due to its blown-out price due to rarity and what your actually getting. I'm not a huge flipper but I would love to own one someday and that extended pursuit makes it my ultimate grail knife.

Pro trek watch that is 200 meter water resistant, solar powered(never have to buy batteries), and atomic time keeping, so always accurate to the second, altimeter, barometer, compass, thermostat, tough as a g-shock, etc. Bark River Bravo One in 3V, just a beast of a knife that will last forever. My folder is a Spiderco para2. Fenix PD36R, 1200 lumen max, several settings and ridiculously long run times. Leatherman Surge. My brown leather Columbia wallet. A stainless steel bolt action pen I bought off amazon for $20 and put fisher refills in it. Its heavy duty with a tungsten carbide tip. couldn't break it if I tried. My line of thinking is more like, what would I want with me in a SHTF zombie apocalypse? All that is about $1300 and I have no plan on replacing it anytime soon.
