You are incredible at really breaking down why certain movies are so horrible. A lot of times I will see a movie and know it was horrible, but not know exactly why. Thanks to you and other TGWTG reviewers for the education I get on why a movie can be ten times worse than I initially thought it was by taking the time to listen to an analysis of it. It also helps me appreciate really good movies more.
Seth Rogen gave an interview recently where he admitted this movie sucks, and says hed sooner have hell freeze over than do a sequel to it. For that at least I can say "Thank you, Seth."
I think they were going for an Iron-Man vibe here; where a jerk becomes a superhero and still acts like a jerk but is a hero. The only reason that worked in Iron-Man was because of RDJ's performance and the writing/direction. Make no mistake, Tony Stark was a jerk but RDJ played him with such charisma and charm that you couldn't help but like and he also showed genuine empathy and care for not only people who were in worse situations than he was but also to his good friends (who were also well written and likable characters). This movie took all of the negative aspects of Stark's character and none of the positive. Which is doubly frustrating because Van Williams played Britt in the TV show as a very charming and charismatic man but had a deep sense of moral responsibility and care for those around him.
Recently saw an episode of the Green Hornet early in the morning that had f##king Mako as one of the bad guys. That's right, Mako actually faced off against Bruce Lee. That show was awesome.
For what it's worth, the Black Beauty is freaking awesome and Waltz is insanely entertaining in this film. And I didn't mind Chou's casting so much. An actual martial artist would have been a lot better, but for what it's worth, I liked him.
I actually enjoyed this movie. I've found it very funny, I like the cast, and the story is well told. Now, I'm not a Green Hornet nerd, of course, but even people around me that are as aware about the original material as I am (if not less) still think that the movie is just okay. But this story of a grown-up kid who learns to be a man is well done, it's a very interesting alternative to Batman, and in that extend the choice of someone like Seth Rogen actually seems logical to me. My 2 cents.

Nicolas Cage was supposed to play Chudnofsky but dropped out because he didn’t want to play a straight up bad guy who just kills people. He’s right. He was fleshed out as Troy in Face/Off. This movie probably wouldn’t allow him to go full on Cage.
Jay Chou was apparently never their first choice for Kato. Apparently Stephen Chow was going to play Kato as well as direct the movie. He ended up dropping out as the director due to creative differences before eventually leaving all together.
I remember when they showed the television series on ScyFy to promote the movie. I absolutely loved it. I went to watch the movie expecting a swab sophisticated genius, not Tony Stark minus the brains, and charisma.
You are absolutely right. I didn't know anything about the Green Hornet when I saw this and I thought it was alright. However, it WAS the first superhero movie I ever saw, and if it weren't for this movie, I may never have took the time to see The Dark Knight, The Avengers, X2, The Amazing Spider-Man, or any other superhero movie. Or maybe I would've seen them anyway. Either way, I didn't hate it.
I have to admit i liked this movie when it came out, until i looked up and remembered it's roots and i realized how shitty this movie is. How could i forget that THIS was the duo fighting along Batman and Robin back in the 60's? Thanks for re-introducing me to the original Green Hornet, ERod.
@ERod2010 I have to applaud that you sat through this movie. I am a huge fan of the radio shows and television series, and when I heard that Rogen was on the project I couldn't think of anyone worse for the role.
I remember when this movie was i the early stages of development, they were talking about having Stephen Chow direct and star as Kato. That would have been awesome.
I am a big fan for the Green Hornet, his concept alone made me like me a lot. Also Bruce Lee is freaking awesome. This movie didn't piss me off that much. It was said that this film was trying to do something new since it's an old concept. The comedic inserts weren't that good, but there are good parts. I like the villain and how he wanted to be a costumed villain wasn't that random. Also the Kaito in this film was good imo and don't label him badly because the director decided to use graphics.
That's what I liked about those movies, though; they weren't the typical Sherlock Holmes adventures. It was a completely new take on the character and his world and I loved it.
My favorite story about the original Green Hornet tv show was when they did the 2 episode cross-over with Adam West's Batman. The writers had the Green Hornet face off with Batman and Kato with Robin. The original script called for ROBIN TO WIN??!! Bruce Lee told them absolutely no one would EVER believe Robin could beat Kato, and refused to show up for filming. THEY CHANGED THE SCRIPT (admittedly so it was a draw - they were actually interrupted before there was a clear winner/loser).
@vicarcharlie Thank you, I just feel that Like Captain America, the Phantom, and The Shadow. The Green Hornet is a product of his era, hence forth he should remain a 60's hero.
Rogen recently confirmed in an interview that a Green Hornet sequel is not going to happen "anytime in the forseeable future." THANK GOD! I think the fact that it was put into the time of year with the weakest competiion, had a last minute 3d conversion to boost ticket price, and it STILL couldnt make 100 million domestically might have something to do with that, lol.
While I agree with a lot of the points you made, I still really liked this movie. I was a fan of the series before the movie, but as soon as I heard Seth was involved I at least knew what to expect and just enjoyed it as it's own thing. Still, great review as ever (Especially liked all the Old Boy bits)
i did watch the show and i still like this movie, yes its corny over the top and some moments are just silly, but the little details that homage the original show that alot of love went into it, and yes seth rogen as the green hornet wasn't the best choice but he did make me laugh a few times, and you have to admit that the guy playing kato does look alot like bruce lee.
ERod, In the 90's, When Universal Studios about to make The Green Hornet movie, Jason Scott Lee was about to play Kato, and Mark Wahlberg was cast as Britt. But what do you think about Wahlberg as Britt? You think he's gonna do Justice?
The most egregious sin of this movie was the Black Beauty chase scene at the end. The driver side door clearly gets torn off during they chase and they remain consistent with this throughout the rest of the chase meaning it was intentional. This also means that the wall of bullets created by the many bad guys that head them off at their destination would have killed them because they turn RIGHT to crash through the window exposing the driver's side to a hail of gunfire.
@aproposreeve I have an old trade paper back that indicates that he is the grate grandson, (however it does have a foot note explaining that certain parts of the mythology changed from medium to medium.)
@ERod2010 I actually like Sherlock Holmes. It's a well done movie with great actors (besides Rachael Whatever), good mystery, and the action shows the focus and intellect of Sherlock as well as his fighting prowess. It was a decent mix of action, mystery, and a touch of comedy, and Jude law and Robert Downy Jr. have a great chemistry as Watson and Holmes respectively
About the casting of Jay Chou, in Asia, he's renowned as a lousy singer and lousy actor, but has amazing contacts in the Hong Kong entertainment scene, which is why he became a (well-marketed) megastar.
@Kyoko019 I have Thirst in my Instant Netflix cue right now (as per your recommendation) I will watch it as soon as I have two hours of calmness in my life.
Wow, your videos get better and better, consecutive awesomness And by the way, the original idea with Kevin Smith sounded awesome, and a waste of good ideas. Just as bad as knowing that Simon Furman wrote a draft to Transformers 1. Why do these peopel make bad movies? Shouldn't they KNOW the movies bad, or there are bad ideas in the movie?
I've heard rumor that Jet Li was up for the role of Kado, but wasn't even considered. Most likely its only a rumor and nothing more. But, rumor or not, my reaction is the same, "THEY COULD'VE HAD JET LI!!!!" *cries*
Weirdly enough, this was my introduction to the Green Hornet. My friend wanted to see it and offered to buy my ticket if I drove us to the movies. I had nothing better to do so I said sure. While I really disliked this movie...I got interested in the show and from then on, was hooked.
Weird, aside from the Year One Brawl, that Aussie Guy has practically been erased from Channel Awesome existence (perhaps he was sucked into the plot hole). Unless there is a specific TGWTG rule against it, maybe you can make a joke referencing his existence.
You aren't wrong. Seth Rogan has done one performance that I think is actually worth seeing in his whole career: the Best friend in the movie 50/50. He's still an idiot, still just being himself on camera, but he shows how far he is willing to go for a friend in their darkest hour. I'd add his cartoon work, but he is easily switched out for Mantis or B.O.B. and few would notice. Other than that he's a waste of time. He took one of the greatest comic books of all time and made it unrecognizable to tv audiences when he butchered the show Preacher. I had no problem with them casting Jay Chou, he was a decent actor, and they were looking to cash in on his international fame. What killed it was that their idea of making him look like a badass, his "Kato Vision" actually made his fights harder and decreased his likelihood of losing. Like when he has to jump over one car, his "Kato Vision turns it into ten cars, meaning he has to move 10x as much to do the same task. Seeing this, it's like the nightmare they had planned for Green Lantern, where Jack Black got the ring and made a two hour, big budget fart joke. Green Hornet and Kato deserved better, and so did audiences.
This wasn't supposed to be a direct adaptation of the Green Hornet. The idea was to create a comedy that poked fun at superhero movies in general as well as the original show, but at the same time reintroduce the concept to anyone unfamiliar with the material. If this was supposed to be a serious movie I would've hated it, but I enjoyed it very much because it tried something different and satirized things that Hollywood recycles far too often.

Wait I loved this film...
well, it's nice too know that there are more classic green hornet fans out there.
