7:11-7:23 The reason why she only had a cameo was because of a ongoing legal disputes between Spawn creator Todd McFarlane and Neil Gaiman, who was hired as a guest writer for Angela's debut issue, Spawn #9.
1) I want to wait and see what they do with her before formulating an opinion. 2) I didn't read any, I was reading Silver Age Comics at my local library at the time. According to Linkara, I didn't miss anything.
I'm going to talk about V and Watchmen early next year, funny thing is I had an honest review planed for Constantine at the same time, but I postponed it.
Four stages, four Bosses: 1) Stage 1: Zombie Grave Yard. Boss: Paul S.W. Anderson 2) Stage 2: Haunted House. Boss: Stephanie Meyer 3) Stage 3: Space Ship. Boss: Darth Lucas 4) Stage 4: Hollywood Studio. Boss: Michael Bay.
If they were to make a new, better, more true-to-the-comics Spawn movie, would you be ok with keeping MIchael Jai White in the titular role? If not, who would you cast?
@Deavi783 Sadly Black Panther never had an action figure or was prominently featured in a cartoon until present date. And yes Spawn bitches allot, in fact Wizard Magazine claimed that in a fight between Spawn and HellBoy, Hellboy would win simply because Spawn would stop every few minutes to muse about his misery.
I've only watched the first episode of the Spawn series and I was so blown away by how dark it was. I didn't know that there would be so much gore, swearing and nudity..... and it KICKED ASS!
I remember liking this movie as a child... yes... I watched this as a child... anyway, I remember loving every minute of it... I'm halting my search for our VHS copy.
This movie had the potential to be so much better than it was though I think part of the trouble, a very small part of the trouble, was that it would have taken the runtime of two movies to tell the best story *and* get it right. There were no plans and no budget for that and so this was the result. It killed some time but that was all it was worth. It wasn't a movie worthy of the property. Good video, Erod.
This guy reviews his films A LOT like the nostalgia critic, although who wouldn't he's the best critic ever. Still a good review though. I thought this film was alright, though horribly dated, would love to see a reboot. The animated series only has three seasons although it's very very good.
Holy shit. After all this time I had NO idea Angela, Sam OR Twitch made cameos in this. I used to love it as a kid, but then I found the HBO series. That was Spawn's peak and it was awesome.
God, she was as funny/psychotic as Mallory from Natural Born Killers. :) I went in with low expectations, but Wilson's acting and the plot made me love it, i call this and Kick Ass as the "Real-Life hero series".
It had all the pieces necessary to make a great movie especially since the characters look the part and they had a concrete and believable plot (somewhat). If they had a better script, more consistency between scenes, removal of those quick cameos or use those cameos to set up a sequel and less goofy dialogue then this could've been a great film. Instead we get all the set up and no delivery in any area.
After watching your Top 10 Hispanic Heroes video, I was wondering which movie you'd smashed with the bigger hammer. Now I know it's this one. Nice review, ERod. I liked the Mr. T joke and the general anger towards this movie. Your rants ("Okay, now all he has to do is..."/"A badass showdown between...") really give perspective on how they screw these movies up.
@ERod2010 i meant it was just on the tv. but your review is spot on as well. Although it didn't have the scene with Clown vs Spawn on motorcycle scene, did you review a directors cut or something?
Nice return, ERod. The movie had some good potential, but they went and blew it. I was never exposed to Spawn, but since the animated show got 10 points, I will check it out.
yeah that was mentioned in the spawn new flesh collection comic books and it was actually because he accidentally caused wanda to miscarriage and therefore decided to leave after he thought that he closed the gates to hell with no more demons left on earth.
yeah you're right, the 1997-1999 cartoon series was awesome!! filled with phylosophy, great action, characters(even the random dogs had personality), epic voices, complexe plots and detailed drawing :)
Great review, as usual. Spawn could've made a really, really cool movie because Michael Jai White is, as you say, Mr Kickass himself. The makeup and prosthetic effects looked amazing, but the CGI was very bad, and for some reason they tried to show it off. Interesting is, Martin Sheen (Jason Wynn), will be playing one of the nicest comic book characters ever, old Uncle Ben, in the new Spider-Man movie.
Whoo! Welcome back, ERod! Loved the Totally Spies reference too... Albeit, mildly sad that I caught it though... Oooh, this one looked good, but the plot.... Epic fail. I honestly haven't seen it, but this is yet another superhero movie I'm glad I missed. I'll forgive semi-crappy visuals if the plot's interesting... But... All show and no substance still makes it suck! Nice job, dude!
The thing about Spawn as a film is it is difficult to follow despite it having a simple plot. John Leguizamo's performance is great albeit annoying at times but that is the Violator. Michael Jai White is good here but I don't think he had much to work with, his character feels directionless throughout, establishing Al Simmons versus Hellspawn in a clearer light would have helped. If you want to enjoy the content of Spawn watching the animated series is the only choice, it's not a watered-down adaptation with crap effects. I've watched a few of these older videos and I have to say, I really like your reviews; they are quick, concise, and fun.
so who do you think is worse as an assassin Elektra or spawn in there respective movies i'd go with spawn because he actually killed the right target. but just by alittle
I remember watching this crap from day one as a kid...I always said the special effects look like shit. Like when Spawn was in hell and he used his laser eyes to take out an entire army of hell spawns!!!! You forgot to include that part, it always pissed me off how stupid it was. Of course his magical laser eyes that can make a bomb device float out of that Sheen's heart and just melt it. I can't believe the people working on the CGI didn't realise how crappy it looked.
I just thought of something... If time on Earth moved quicker while Simmons was in hell and 5 years have passed, then why did the same thing not happen after Spawn went to hell again later on?... This movie is just riddled with plot holes....
Honestly, if they wanted to make a good Spawn movie, it would have to be a rated R movie. It wouldn't work if it was PG-13 because Spawn is supposed to be a dark, mysterious character. This film was going for more of a blockbuster and made Spawn too safe.
@gamezilla345 Just keep in mind that the animated show is very explicit. Lots of violence, sex, gore, and naughty language. If you're okay with all that stuff then by all means check out the Series.
A few of reasons Spawn isn't popular anymore is that 1. Cogliostro turned out to be evil. 2.most of his villains disappeared and were never seen again. Finally Al Simmons killed himself! WTH?
yo, EROD, not sure if you knew this already or if you did, but the jessica priest character was actually supposed to be a character called Chapel, he's the one who killed al simmons in the comics. the reason they replaced him with priest is because chapel's creator rob liefeld didn't allow it for some weird copyright reasons or some crap like that. I really hope we get a genuinely good spawn movie in the future, hes got a lot of potential, give him a a good director and he will work perfectly
when I was little I wasn't able to see R movies.its about the kids.Adults had the anime, kids had the movie.Mcfarlane plans to make an adult horror movie so cross your fingers
@ERod2010 The ringtone sounds identical to the one the spies would get when their communicators went off to let them know they have a mission... Albeit it wouldn't surprise me if it was a random sound effect now.
@Kittynyow113 I don't think it's the director's fault, I think they were desperately trying to make this PG 13 and they ended up dulling down and great dark story.
I would love to see a commentary on this one. Because 1. This was the first review of yours that I've seen. 2. Because I watched the animated series before this, not really important, just something I would share.
Blade started the comic book movie craze, he deserves to be referenced as often as possible.
"Hey, fool. You look mighty cute in them jeans."
Awesome Eddie Murphy nod.
7:11-7:23 The reason why she only had a cameo was because of a ongoing legal disputes between Spawn creator Todd McFarlane and Neil Gaiman, who was hired as a guest writer for Angela's debut issue, Spawn #9.
"You looking mighty cute in them jeans foo!" LMAO nice Eddie Murphy Delirious reference.
I'll do it when Guillermo Del Toro comes out with the next one in 4 to 5 years.
@MrThePandaman
1. Thank you.
2. 24 ringtone gets ERod's approval on awesomeness
3. Yes Tallahassee Florida
4. Yes it really sucks hard.
5. What impersonation.
6. I aim to please.
@ArmymanZ83 Sadly, no. They Did Hellboy/ Savage dragon and HellBoy/ Goon
Four stages, four Bosses:
1) Stage 1: Zombie Grave Yard. Boss: Paul S.W. Anderson
2) Stage 2: Haunted House. Boss: Stephanie Meyer
3) Stage 3: Space Ship. Boss: Darth Lucas

If they were to make a new, better, more true-to-the-comics Spawn movie, would you be ok with keeping MIchael Jai White in the titular role? If not, who would you cast?
I'm planning on doing an honest review some time along.
I'll consider it after the full season, is released on DVD.
but if your wondering, yes I like the show.
Any comic book movies you liked that other people thought sucked? And on the subject, any comic book movies you hated that others loved?
@Deavi783 Sadly Black Panther never had an action figure or was prominently featured in a cartoon until present date.
And yes Spawn bitches allot, in fact Wizard Magazine claimed that in a fight between Spawn and HellBoy, Hellboy would win simply because Spawn would stop every few minutes to muse about his misery.
@EmoKidRH Hell Yeah!!! The definitive collection is coming out on DVD soon, can't wait.
I've only watched the first episode of the Spawn series and I was so blown away by how dark it was. I didn't know that there would be so much gore, swearing and nudity..... and it KICKED ASS!
i didnt hate first class, but was annoyed with EVERYTHING they got wrong. looking forward to you talkin about it
I remember liking this movie as a child... yes... I watched this as a child... anyway, I remember loving every minute of it... I'm halting my search for our VHS copy.

ERod, what's your favourite Spawn comic? Mine is the one where he helps out the abused working class little boy and hides in his shed like ET.
Yeah, I saw this in the theater. Besides the special effects, this was brutal. The animated movie/series was downright excellent though. Great job!
I remember seeing part of this movie on TV when I was really little. I thought Spawn's cape looked so cool.
Glad you are back and going at it harder then ever.
@finalsight No, that scene was in the theatrical version, the directors cut just has more curse words.
The busting you gave the movie at 13:50 is some long built up rage on this. Glad to have you back man.
@KyrieLeisonM ... what Totally Spies reference? I never watched that show.
@ERod2010 i meant it was just on the tv. but your review is spot on as well.
Although it didn't have the scene with Clown vs Spawn on motorcycle scene, did you review a directors cut or something?
Just, New Nightmare. As I pointed out in my Air Bender and Swamp Thing reviews, he is not the worst kid actor in the movies I have reviewed thus far.
Nice return, ERod.
The movie had some good potential, but they went and blew it.
I was never exposed to Spawn, but since the animated show got 10 points, I will check it out.
This movie was rated PG-13 even though the comics and TV series are R rated as a reboot getting the R rating and being more respectful to the comics.
The directors cut is rated R.
@@sorenthefilmbrony Yeah but that doesn't mean anything if it didn't give the R rating more power like Blood and Gore or the use of Strong Language
They where the seasons of the show, just edited together in to one long story.
"Many happy returns." - A.P.
yeah that was mentioned in the spawn new flesh collection comic books and it was actually because he accidentally caused wanda to miscarriage and therefore decided to leave after he thought that he closed the gates to hell with no more demons left on earth.
Awesome!
I'm glad you're finally back! :D
If they decided to reboot the spawn movie who should they cast for spawn ?
The specials effects were a highlight by late 90s standart i guess but....... the script was SO terrible.... damn !
yeah you're right, the 1997-1999 cartoon series was awesome!! filled with phylosophy, great action, characters(even the random dogs had personality), epic voices, complexe plots and detailed drawing :)
I'm glad to see you gave Luciel's big brother a work out on this movie.
Great review, as usual. Spawn could've made a really, really cool movie because Michael Jai White is, as you say, Mr Kickass himself. The makeup and prosthetic effects looked amazing, but the CGI was very bad, and for some reason they tried to show it off. Thank God you are back!!!
I knew I wasn't alone.
Not only spawn needs a reboot movie but spawn should have another video game
The thing about Spawn as a film is it is difficult to follow despite it having a simple plot. John Leguizamo's performance is great albeit annoying at times but that is the Violator. Michael Jai White is good here but I don't think he had much to work with, his character feels directionless throughout, establishing Al Simmons versus Hellspawn in a clearer light would have helped. 9:44 which review is he talking about?
Love the opening to this. Awsome.
@FromSwedenwithgore That's what I'm here for buddy, to voice your rage.
so who do you think is worse as an assassin Elektra or spawn in there respective movies
i'd go with spawn because he actually killed the right target. but just by alittle
I loved the animated series! :D

Of course his magical laser eyes that can make a bomb device float out of that Sheen's heart and just melt it.
I can't believe the people working on the CGI didn't realise how crappy it looked.
That was already discussed in the Unseen 13 video
Thank you, Myles.
"Dayham the devul to hell!!!" Oh man, that was an awesome cutaway. You rule, Erod.
Is you could direct the reboot for Spawn, who would you cast?
I was born in Mayaguez, but I was raised in San Juan
I just thought of something... If time on Earth moved quicker while Simmons was in hell and 5 years have passed, then why did the same thing not happen after Spawn went to hell again later on?... This movie is just riddled with plot holes....
You can easily suggest that it took 5 years for him to reanimate. Look at how its done in Exorcist 3, that one took 10 years.
Martin Meers Good point, maybe that is the real reason it took 5 years.
Malebogia intentionally sent Al five years later to bring him confusion and despair.
Mr Lyn That makes sense, then never mind what I wrote, was just going by the way E Rod explained it.
Honestly, if they wanted to make a good Spawn movie, it would have to be a rated R movie. It wouldn't work if it was PG-13 because Spawn is supposed to be a dark, mysterious character. This film was going for more of a blockbuster and made Spawn too safe.
Hey ERod I've watched the first two Blade movies. Should I give Trinity a try or should i just watch your review instead.
@gamezilla345 Just keep in mind that the animated show is very explicit. Lots of violence, sex, gore, and naughty language. If you're okay with all that stuff then by all means check out the Series.
Hey ERod, who do you prefer as Spawn: Michael Jai White from the movie or Keith David from the animated series?
There's an honest review coming in July.
@UnusualSuspect2011 Yes they have extended my up load time, but I'm trying to keep it under 15 one way or another (unless it's a special occasion).
@AdamOfNebb "He's our man if he can't do it, no one can!"
I have been waiting for this day my whole life! *record scratch* I mean, for the past month!
Nick Cage as Ghost Rider
Brandon Routh as Dylan Dog
A few of reasons Spawn isn't popular anymore is that 1. Cogliostro turned out to be evil. 2.most of his villains disappeared and were never seen again. Finally Al Simmons killed himself! WTH?
@TheAnimalShocker Agreed, it's almost like they thought that since they got the look right everything else would fall in it's place, but it didn't.
yo, EROD, not sure if you knew this already or if you did, but the jessica priest character was actually supposed to be a character called Chapel, he's the one who killed al simmons in the comics. the reason they replaced him with priest is because chapel's creator rob liefeld didn't allow it for some weird copyright reasons or some crap like that. I really hope we get a genuinely good spawn movie in the future, hes got a lot of potential, give him a a good director and he will work perfectly
I actually kinda like the movie, the suits were awesome, especially spawn, he looked more demonic then the comic
@Archaeos Thank you, Rusty the Sledge Hammer, loves you too.
@Diss8787 NOW THAT IS GREAT CATCH PHRACE!!! I wonder if anyone has used it before?
Some one new, a hungry young actor.
I freaking LOVE "V for Vendetta"!
anyone notice the jesus symbolism when he was on the fence.
HAHA! Great Mr. T Impression :)
Representatives of hell: We have been waiting for you Mr Rodriguez.
whats the song you used for annihilators scene?
when I was little I wasn't able to see R movies.its about the kids.Adults had the anime, kids had the movie.Mcfarlane plans to make an adult horror movie so cross your fingers
@ERod2010 The ringtone sounds identical to the one the spies would get when their communicators went off to let them know they have a mission... Albeit it wouldn't surprise me if it was a random sound effect now.
oh I see kool Puerto Rico is a nice place to live good one where in America do you reside.
@Tonecupone03 Yeah, it's sad we will never see a decent live action adaptation.
Blades reaction is priceless
personally I like this movie. yea it's a guilty pleasure but it sparked my love of action movies, darker movies, and comic books/comic book movies.
"You've been "violated", Girly Man"
@ArmymanZ83 they did it as a VS article in a Wizard Magazine once, but your right it should have been a comic. FYI, Hellboy won.
Gotta love that early 90s CGI!
oh I see kool Puerto Rico is a nice place goos one. where in America do you reside
yay you're back!
4:56 You know in hindsight that joke's probly a bit funnier with the new FF film coming out.
um... yes and he was also Luigi in Super Mario Bros.
Yknow I lost a lot of respect for Erod when he called Robin Williams annoying.
Really wish Chapel was in the movie, where the hell did the red head body guard come from, so upsetting, especially after seeing the animation
