      Also it gives depth to Millas and Sashas relationship, thanks to him she could learn to overcome this never ending nightmare and live with a happy rewarding live as a Psychonaut, even tho Sasha seems to be the direct opposite to Millas cheerful personality

      The fact that the team originally planned for you to constantly be fighting nightmares that broke out of her mind as minibosses (as evidenced by the one weird flow-breaking remnant of that idea in The Milkman Conspiracy) suggests Milla might be clamping down a little too hard on that boxful of trauma - not unlike Sasha, really, even if she expresses it in a very different way

    I wouldn't say that Psychonauts over simplifies psychological and mental issues. I'd say that it's a good starting point to talking about those issues.

    • @ninjapotatolorf6237
      @ninjapotatolorf6237 3 ปีที่แล้ว +93

      It is a bit oversimplified by modern standards, but keep in mind that Psychonauts was one of the first games to even try tackling the subject of mental health in the first place. We wouldn't be where we are now without it. Because of that (and because it's a very fun game) I'm willing to overlook the places where the game could've done a little better and instead appreciate it for what the game offers.

      @@ninjapotatolorf6237 A more modern Psychonauts would probably be a bigger camp, more kids and personnel and the personnel are the mentally sick ones. But you can't tell at first glance. And need to either trick them or make them reveal their true selves in order to get into their minds.
      Like the part time shop assistant having to be caught by using pyrokinesis on a box of marshmallows in the storage room when you ask for something not on the shop shelf so he has to go in there.

    Milla's Memory Vault about tragedy at the orphanage implies that not only she was a caretaker who had to witness orphanage burning to ashes...
    But also on top of that from initial shock Milla's clairvoyance powers AWAKENED at that moment and she had a first row seat into the minds of kids burning alive.

    • @Youtoober-ru4lf
      @Youtoober-ru4lf 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Interesting thought but I think you missed the marker. For one, I highly doubt any person, yet multiple children will think such similiar nasty thoughts as they die.
      Secondly, in the game, every character in each person's mind is just their own thoughts or insecurities that have taken form.
      What you're referring to could be the memories and thoughts of the actual children, but it is more likely that the dark scenery and dark things the children say in her mind are just creations her own mental image. Just as Raz's evil dad in the meat circus was saying nasty things to Raz only to find out Raz's dad is nothing like Raz's mental perception of him.
      In short, It's just her blaming herself for something that was out of her control.

    • @Ghostel3591
      @Ghostel3591 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      @@Youtoober-ru4lf ermm I didn't say "What Nightmares say inside Milla's mind = What kids thought when they were burned alive". From what statement you even arrived at this conclusion?
      When I mentioned possibility of Milla unconcisionly using Clairvoyance to see into minds of kids which were burned alive at the moment - I was referring to the last slide in her Memory Reel with the image of Milla (still in her caretaker uniform meaning it is image of her suffering during the tragic event itself - rather than some time after) assaulted by visions of kids being burned alive.

      according to the Li-Po backstory document on the first psychonauts, the original reference concept for Milla's backstory explicitly mentions that she heard the voices of the children and had her first psychic experience there. The script itself hasn't been stated canon, but this does heavily imply that the memory vault slide was of Milla literally hearing the voices of the children.

    Another thing that's kind of cool about Lungfishopolis: if you look closely you'll see that your attack animation is slightly different than in any other level. In most levels you attack with a telekinetic hand, where here that hand has slight but noticeable claws.
    And every single NPC sees Raz differently through Clairvoyance. Milla sees him as a baby, Sasha as a younger him, Lili as a dashing prince, etc.
    The sheer amount of detail in this game is amazing.

  • @tarekmoneimsaid

    Another interesting thing about Mila's demons is that they are controlled (behind bars, unable to hurt you). But on other untrained minds, they can actually run rampant, especially in The Milkman's Conspiracy.
    Also in a lot of other Psychonauts minds, during training (except, obviously, in Sasha's where he loses control), you don't get attacked by censors unless they want to teach you something.

    was psychonauts really criticized for simplifying the process of healing someone of their traumas and mental illnesses? as if being able to jump inside someone's mind and directly stopping what is causing the problem wouldnt immediately cure the person

    • @KevinHelpUs

      @cronos12346 3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      @@KevinHelpUs The thing is that some people expect unrealistic things from games, it's beyond stupid to criticize the game for "oversimplifying mental trauma", both the themes and the gameplay has to coexist and complement each other, and that is what Psychonauts does and that's the way it works in the universe it sets. What do people want? For Raz to have several sessions with his "patients" and charge them by the hour too?

      Do not forget that the psycho portal is able to organize the mind into an actual world as well so simplifying the process of healing is very much more “realistic”. NORMALLY curing mental illness is not as easy as that. Key word is “normally”. I mean if someone had a device or a Psycho Portal like that then curing mental illness will definitely be as easy.

    Very important fact about the Milkman; if you find the second vault off the telephone wire, you can see that he's an alter ego that Oleander conditioned into Boyd's mind to burn down thorny tower if necessary. He's locked away so that Boyd's censors can't find and eliminate him until Oleander needs to awaken the alter ego he created. Raz sets him off early, and THAT's why the censors don't show up until the end. Because THAT's the part of Boyd's mind that doesn't belong

    It’s interesting hearing you go through these levels, point out the areas where what’s actually “up with a character” is more hidden (e.x. It’s easy to feel like you know the game pretty well without even knowing the entirety of Milla or Sasha’s backstories), and point out as well that the game’s been criticized for showcasing inherently complex concepts like mental illness and trauma in simple/exaggerated way while still praising it as a primer of sorts after showing that there’s still plenty to discuss and unpack about these levels after watching your PN2 video - it kinda feels like logically progressing with Raz. He started off getting an exciting *feel* for what it meant to be a Psychonaut, and seeing what a person’s… personality looks like from the inside, dysfunction and all… while in PN2, he has to develop a more mature version of that understanding. He’s gone from Sasha kind of already knowing as an experimental teacher that he’d tool around in his brain and overload the censor outlets to *actually* acting against Hollis’s wishes and needing to learn a serious lesson about messing with someone’s head, and from being able to feel like he’s sort of on safari in the asylum quartet’s brains and in some part treat them as a means to an end to needing to take the Psychic Seven seriously considering that they have a complex story shared with his own family. Both games are *great* - and the first *is*, well, a “first” in a story where there are plenty of secrets to be found, and for darkness and complexity to be a surprising thing to discover; the second is one where you already know that that’s there, and explore what to do with it.

    Ever since playing the sequel and being reminded why I've wanted a sequel for so many years, I've been obsessed with finding videos analyzing the levels. Undoubtingly my favorite platformer game and one of my favorite games of all time. My fingers are crossed we get a 3rd game just as amazing as it's predecessors

    Excluding the fact that the final bosses are 2 characters who are only given screen time in the final level (And yes I know there existence was forshadowed trough out the entire game but still), I'm not fan of the fact that the main antagonist get's of the hook so easaly.
