This is one of if not THE best long form breakdown of the the FF games that literally exists on this planet. You really should take immense pride in yourself, and these works!!!
Those translators were godsend. What a good job. I loved hearing how they actually cared about doing more than just a simple translation. Wish more people would go above and beyond like that in their jobs.
Wow. I know you put a lot of work into this as I was there while you were capturing gameplay and editing the video but I'm still blown away by the finished product. I like that you went through this with an even hand. You are definitely a fan but you brought up the positives and the negatives of the games and that's cool. This one is just how I am but I actually found learning about the games development more fascinating than the games plots. You did fantastic breaking down both though. That's just a reflection of my interests being more in game development. I love that you took the time to try and explain the games timeline. Plus, I really love the beginning and learning the origin of Tactics Ogre and how it later influenced Final Fantasy Tactics.
for anyone watching this, in FF12 The Zodiac Age you can now switch Jobs, resetting your license points. this means if you arent happy with your job setup you can just change it. you can do that by talking to Montblanc in the Centurio Clan Hall.
XII really was one of my favorite FF's (Behind 8) and the Return to Ivalice raids in FFXIV was so freaking awesome. Not to mention the battle theme from Vagrant Story. C'mon SE Make XIV's next expansion be set in Ivalice!
Man you do awesome work with these review videos. I’m 27, grew up faster than I thought I would with 3 kids now. Although I never had the time to play all these final fantasies like I wish I did, I’m extremely happy to see reviews with such depth and care being made. Many thanks for the hours of entertainment, the nostalgia and the education. I’ve only been able to go back and finish FF 6, FF Tactics, disc two of FF8, but I also own this FF12, after watching this I’m more than sure I’m gonna start the 12 journey. Many thanks once again for the quality content my man.
I really appreciate this in depth explanation into one of the greatest fantasy/fictional worlds of all time. I have absolutely loved Ivalice from tactics to XII (and after). Thank you so much!
And today I learned that the Gambit system was modeled after programming and NFL plays. Therefore FFXII is both the programmer's Final Fantasy...and the football player's Final Fantasy. Awesome. Fitting that I like both lol
I just watched the entire series over the course of a few days. As someone yearning for a quality retrospective of the entire series made from a single perspective, as well as getting information about what each game meant to the general population, this is a treasure! I knew very little about the series outside of reviews for generally the more popular 3D ones, and few of them as comprehensive. I am so excited to see your next entry!
@RRPGReviews congratulations! This is amazing content. the amount of information is great as well as the editing and allthe images used. While i usually only listen to viedos like this, you managed to get my attention to actually watch the video. I will be checking the rest of the series and spread the word about you. Good job.
I’ve played and beat Tactics. I’m replaying so I can beat FFXII now. Ivalice is a definitely distinctive place. It’s cool to see it fleshed our like this.
Really enjoy these, however I think they would be improved by slowing down a little bit as sometimes it's hard to keep up especially when multitasking.
The wait for Part 10 is going to kill me even now. Watching all of this, I feel bad for the company that tried to do an FF12 spinoff but couldn't cause Square-Enix were idiotic. They are around, just reborn under a new name and yeah... the bitterness still remains.
I'm working on Episode 10 at this time, but it will be truly worth the wait like every episode I work on. :) On a serious note, it does suck about what happened with GRIN, even though they are still alive now under the name Overkill Software. It would have been nice for a Western developer to try their hand on a Final Fantasy game (either mainline or spinoff) for once, but Square Enix being too safe with just developing those games over in their home country is obviously going to hurt them for being too complacent, in the future. However, the stuff that happens from behind the scenes that either works or does not is just what business is. It sucks, but at the same time, it doesn't mean that a company is considered incompetent when they were willing to try, firsthand. Maybe one day we'll see a different take for Final Fantasy done by a Western developer if it isn't GRIN or Eidos Montreal. There are so many possibilities that have potential.
Thank you for this, was looking for a great story recap after finally going back to ff12 in the remaster. I loved world of Ivalice since 98' I cant imagine what I would have done with myself if I didnt have tactics/advance/ff12 so many hours between them all lol
Goodness me, this was the most indepth, informative, and well balanced explanation of Ivalice I have ever seen. As an enormous fan (as if my username doesn't give it away) this entire video pleased me greatly. I have a couple of quibbles with some slightly incorrect plot points, but aside from those it was a marvelous experience. I was wondering if that map of Ivalice you continued to flash on the screen at points was official or not. I did not know there were any official maps of Romanda and Ordallia. Not just that, but the endless amount of concept art were things I had never even seen before, such as a full picture of St. Ajora and the various maps and the like. Also the quote you mention from Matsuno in 2010 is strange as that very same year he worked with SE in bringing a truly updated and incredible remaster of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. He also, just a couple of weeks ago, said that he wants to work on a new FFT as he feels time is slipping away from him and he wants to please the fans, if only just one more time. Fortress is a sad story, I am not sure what could have been done with that, but it seemed a little flawed to begin with. I wonder if maybe Square should have reached out to a more experienced Western studio instead of a relative unknown. I was pleased by those sales numbers, except on FFTA2 which I feel is an improvement on FFTA in almost every way. FFXII is now available on every modern console and I do hope it does well on the Switch.
When it comes to the maps of Ivalice, they were official ones that point out to the specific games that they covered. As far as finding an actual map of the entirety of Ivalice, that was really hard to locate as I had to find the correct one that would correspond to how the games would actually portray that world. That was a real toughie to go through as Square Enix has not even released an official map that covers all of the countries and continents within Ivalice. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the ones like the unofficial map that covers all of that world was how Ivalice is supposed to be. Thanks for your continued support. By watching your videos and leaving feedback (both positive praise and constructive criticism), you're supporting me. Hope you look forward to Episode 10 that covers the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy and Final Fantasy Type-0!
@@rrpgreviews It has long been speculated that the Rozarria Empire eventually became the Kingdom of Lesalia (loss of land and influence, explaining still how one family line controls three separate kingdoms) so that is not too far off the mark. Back when Vagrant Story released I had no idea that it was essentially a spin off of Final Fantasy. That was mainly because I didn't play the Final Fantasy Tactics games so the the first time I heard about the world of Ivalice was Final Fantasy XII. I did play a bit of Vagrant Story but couldn't get into it which is why the only time I had heard of the world of Ivalice being Final Fantasy XII. I honestly didn't like Final Fantasy XII at all. I said that playing video games in general was what made him want to become a game designer in the first place. Final Fantasy has 12 letters. Final Fantasy XII has it all. Final Fantasy XII is the best FF of all time, and the last great game Square-Enix has ever released (since they never had the resources or interest to recreate Vagrant Story nor had the courage to fund a proper sequel). The timeline from what its rumored would be Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, Final Fantasy Tactics A2 within the world of Ivalice, Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance with its modern timeline since the world of Ivalice was represented in a book, and then Final Fantasy Tactics A2 within the modern timeline.
That's the thing. When the game came out, there was no way to exactly know if it would be considered part of the Ivalice Universe. Also, I would say that Sydney Losstarot being the Cid of that game is a bit of a wide stretch. When it comes to the character Cid, he has to be someone who has a strong zest for airships, machinery, engineering, etc. That's been very prevalent in almost all Final Fantasy games to this day, and Sydney Losstarot doesn't fit into that category, in my opinion.
If it was made with that gameplay style or that of what Dragon Age: Origins was like, then I'd say it would've had a good chance in breaking the mold for Japanese games made from overseas developers.
Love 12s story its like what the original producer always wanted to do in next gen however the character models are soooooo boring except for the Viera n her buddy.
Japanese critics: 10/10 American critics: This game sucks because I’m to stupid to understand Gambit Board and License Slots. ^American critics are most likely the largest factor that caused that long period in gaming where Developers and Publisher felt they had to hold hands through the whole game. It’s not the games fault that you can’t wrap your mind around the Gambit System and License Board. Way to go in making Americans look even more stupid than the rest of the world already thought. 👏👏👏
By far the best game in Final Fantasy series... But not the best Final Fantasy in the series. 6, 7 and 9 fight for that title, I'd side with 9. Still, sad how much developers struggled with this masterpiece.
If I digested every single thing, then we would look at maybe 2x or 3x the length of this video, and I do not do that for these retrospective videos. It's just straight to the point with the list of facts.
@RRPGReviews I get that these videos require a lot of work, all the more reason to add something meaningful to the conversation on the subject, what do I want an hour of facts for for when I searched "retrospective" for deep analysis of gameplay and story.
Hmmm 20 minutes in and nothing about final fantasy 12. I'm learning a lot about final fantasy tactics but that's not why I clicked on your video, just saying
You will get to Final Fantasy XII, shortly. Don't always assume that every video covering a Final Fantasy game starts with me talking about a mainline entry. Besides, I talk about Final Fantasy XII a lot more than I do about Final Fantasy Tactics or any of the other games part of the Ivalice Alliance.
For me, starting the video with the other games that featured Ivalice first, and how the devs came up with it come FFXII made it much more interesting. If I wanted to just learn about FFXII only, I would look for other videos exclusively about FFXII and not watch one with "Ivalice" in it. Just saying.

When it comes to the character Cid, he has to be someone who has a strong zest for airships, machinery, engineering, etc. That's been very prevalent in almost all Final Fantasy games to this day, and Sydney Losstarot doesn't fit into that category, in my opinion.
Wow, you totally need more subs.
1:10:10 that voice though
I wish fortress happened. I would have loved it
If it was made with that gameplay style or that of what Dragon Age: Origins was like, then I'd say it would've had a good chance in breaking the mold for Japanese games made from overseas developers.
@@rrpgreviews or it would be like capcom trying to go western and everything gone wrong.
Fortress looks like monster hunter
Fortress looks like a game that I would never play even with FF name on it.
FFT best in the series
Love 12s story its like what the original producer always wanted to do in next gen however the character models are soooooo boring except for the Viera n her buddy.
I enjoyed ff12 and its remaster.
FF tactics :(, some great things only happend once it seems
Japanese critics: 10/10
American critics: This game sucks because I’m to stupid to understand Gambit Board and License Slots.
6 minutes in, this is a rapid fire list of facts, with no no time to digest any of it. Skip
It's such a shame we never got FF12 Fortress. Seeing games these days, I think it could be well received now.
