Anyone know the name of Charlie Olson's lead dog, or any other of his dogs? Kaasen, with dual lead of Balto and Fox, ran a total of 55 miles into Nome. There was some controversy about the final leg of the relay because Kaasen was supposed to hand off the serum to another driver who would have taken the serum into Nome, but Kaasen chose to continue his portion all the way into Nome with the serum. The weather during the final run into Nome was horrendous, but to say that other mushers ran in "clear weather" is total crap, and is wrong both factually and because it belittles the efforts of everyone involved in the relay. Every driver and every team deserves credit. In total, Seppala with Togo in the lead, ran 261 miles in three days. Togo and Seppala were the main team that got it done. They covered like 350 miles while 20 other teams combined did the same distance so only did like 20 miles each. But what you fail to realize is that these are working dogs, you cant just retire them in the house. They have been trained their whole life for a purpose, not to be pets. I think Disney has a movie coming out about this. But yeah don’t feel bad man, living in a zoo is a cozy retirement for a working dog

That isn't the real Balto. Balto is long done, as (all of) his body should be. This is just his shell. I hate seeing this done to creatures that should be returned to the earth when they die, not skinned, mounted, and put on display. Pictures should be enough.

Balto was only the lead dog of a 20 team relay. He did do one the most difficult legs. The other stellar lead dog was Togo who did a 91 mile leg, a movie braised on him came out in 2019, “Togo”.

Alright to all the jerks saying Balto didn’t save anyone in middle school I read an article that included an interview with the musher that Balto pulled. In it he explained that they got lost and that the dogs kept trying to lay down and sleep, but Balto wouldn’t let them stop until they got back to Nome. If he hadn’t done that then there’s a good chance they all would have froze to death before they got back so can you quit saying Balto didn’t do anything? It’s rather annoying that you’re basing this all on a Disney + movie that while correct Togo did run most of the race he isn’t the only hero dog.
The story of Balto was very cool he got more of the attention to doing two legs of the trip. In addition it was thought by many that he would not be big enough or able to run even one leg on such an important trip.

Ran 20 kilometers more, and he was much mure experienced. Balto ran 55 kilometers, picked up slight , saved kassanas life on his way back home and got serum back home.
A little late on this one, but kind of cool to see my old stomping grounds... Balto is moved around that museum at least a half-dozen times in the last 25 years... We used to have Lucy over there too... Lucy was the most complete oldest skeleton ever found. Cleveland has its troubles, but our museums were always top notch.
the cartoon never confirms if it is true or not, its just the way bolto's adaptive father explained to him, so he could understand why some humans were afraid of him. It also gave him a much needed ego boost. it was purely narrative.
there is also a statue of Balto on 4th Ave in downtown Anchorage AK, my husband is from AK and he and I lived there for the first 4 years after we were married. there is a webcam that you can watch that shows the statue. it was one of the first things I wanted to see when I got there... I thought it was suppose to be a wolf.... then he told me the story. pretty cool. but the whole thing tied in with the ididorod sled race that is held every year. along with the Yukon run and a few others. loved watching the start in Anchorage! pretty awesome sight!!!

That's not just any parakeet. That's a Carolina Parakeet. This particular species used to be native to the Eastern and Midwestern US, but went extinct in 1918.
It doesn't matter which dogs bought the medicine to Nome the main thing is that the children as well as adults are were saved from that horrible flu diphtheria and were better when they received the antitoxin to help them get rid of diphtheria flu in order for them to get better ok so everybody stop bickering about it be thankful that these dogs were able to get it for them alright take care have a nice night from April.

The winter of 1925, to be exact. They shipped it to Nenana and had the dogs bring it back to Nome. The movie was made in 1995, I cry every time I see the end scene.
Another famous sled dog is Togo for the same run. there is a Girl Scout camp called Togowoods. I believe it is near Wasilla. don't know if it is still around. this was back in the 1970s when I lived up there.

Jeddvm Balto May have technically only finished last and Tōgō May have ran farther, but according to an article that interviewed Balto’s musher Kaasen at multiple times most of the team tried to lay down and sleep instead of continuing onward and Balto kept them going onward and refused to let them stop, both dogs are heroes and I wouldn’t exist without both of them doing their job. I’ll admit it’s a shame Tōgō isn’t given as much credit as he deserves but I’m pretty sure he was at the unveiling of the Balto statue though I could be wrong.

That was the best place to go two times a year. The Minerals and rocks area near Balto was always my favorite.

Ran 20 kilometers more, and he was much mure experienced. Balto ran 55 kilometers, picked up slight , saved kassanas life on his way back home and got serum back home.

A little late on this one, but kind of cool to see my old stomping grounds... Balto is moved around that museum at least a half-dozen times in the last 25 years... We used to have Lucy over there too... Lucy was the most complete oldest skeleton ever found.
Cleveland has its troubles, but our museums were always top notch.
Fun fact: Balto is actually a pure bred husky! Not part/half wolf at all!

there is also a statue of Balto on 4th Ave in downtown Anchorage AK, my husband is from AK and he and I lived there for the first 4 years after we were married. there is a webcam that you can watch that shows the statue. it was one of the first things I wanted to see when I got there... I thought it was suppose to be a wolf.... then he told me the story. pretty cool. but the whole thing tied in with the ididorod sled race that is held every year. along with the Yukon run and a few others. loved watching the start in Anchorage! pretty awesome sight!!!

There were actually 20 sled dog teams that made the full journey with the serum, balto was the lead dog that made the last run into Noam :)

What about togo? I know this is an old video but still.. Togo's team ran almost 400 miles, and Balto gets all of this credit? Balto was not even the main lead dog, there were two.. Him and a dog names Fox.

Togo ran fucking 75 kilometers,and balto ran 55 its just fucking 20 kilometers less, and it was Baltos first time running as leader, he picked up sleight, ran 55 kilometers, saved kassanas life on his way back home, and got fucking serum back home, so i dont get hype about togo like wtf the only think he did was ran 20 km more, and he even had fucking 100 dogs around him while balto had 7 times less
The winter of 1925, to be exact. They shipped it to Nenana and had the dogs bring it back to Nome. The movie was made in 1995, I cry every time I see the end scene.

They've done a good job of preserving him. I loved the animated movie when I was a kid, and still do. Hope to be able to go see him at the museum and his statue in Central Park someday.

Jeddvm Balto May have technically only finished last and Tōgō May have ran farther, but according to an article that interviewed Balto’s musher Kaasen at multiple times most of the team tried to lay down and sleep instead of continuing onward and Balto kept them going onward and refused to let them stop, both dogs are heroes and I wouldn’t exist without both of them doing their job. I’ll admit it’s a shame Tōgō isn’t given as much credit as he deserves but I’m pretty sure he was at the unveiling of the Balto statue though I could be wrong.
