    I did the same thing before I watched this video!!! I learned and made some minor mistakes that I would do differently! I have 45 eggs in the incubator on day 17 today so with some good luck, I’ll have some quail to put in my coop.

    I found a 1970s quart of lead-white paint I got from a backyard sale.
    Grandma says, it’s still good for several days.
    White lead paint is my grandma and my favorite

      Interesting. Just be careful when using it. I am not sure I would use it on an animal enclosure myself. Don't want led contaminating the meat I am going to eat. Then again, quail aren't bad about chewing on things like rabbits are.

      Hey, I recognize that user name. Thanks for stopping by and for watching.
      check craigslist and see if someone in your area sells quail. I find that they are pretty common once you look for them. Search for Coturnix quail or Japanese quail.
      if you have any questions.

      Did you see my video where i talked about the hawk? He was on top of the cage but didn't get in. After a few days he left. Actually, hes still around but isn't bothering the quail any more. Just gave up.

      +Slightly Rednecked I did watch it, yes. Glad they're not being much of a bother. Curious to see how they do outside in the winter. I'm in the Pacific NW so generally mild but we do get lots of wind and rain. I'm thinking about a larger coop with cages inside....

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am curious too. I may wrap the open sides with a tarp during the winter to keep the drafts down. I thought about more of a shed with cages hung inside like I do for my rabbits. I guess we will see how it goes. :)

    Hey Mate Im from Australia and I like how you designed your cage. It is easy to maintain and stress free. Just two qustions. 1. Where does your feeders go and where they get water from?
    2. In some videos I have seen there is a bit of in balance on the bottom so that way the eggs can easily slip down the sides.
    You manually fetch the eggs?

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have an automatic water system that I just run a hose through the wire to the inside. The feeder just sits on the cage floor. I have tried the tilted cages before and didn't like them myself so I just reach in and grab the eggs. It isn't a big deal for me.

      How much did that water system you build cost you mate?

      The sheet metal screws have a specific name?
      Thanks for all the info mate.

    heat issues you have any do you need to run fans or is a tin roof or tarp enough?

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So far I have not had any issues. The hutch itself is in shade though and never in full sun. I have not run any fans or anything else and we have had well over 90 degree heat for some time. They seem to be doing just fine. Hope that helps.

    Do you by chance know where to buy the trays that go under to catch the waste? My husband and I are building one using this layout (your white hutch) but tweeking it a bit. We are trying to do an 8ft x 3ft x 14 in 2 tier hutch but the top tier will need some sort of added trays under it to serve as a waste collector and roof so as not to fall through to the bottom tier. Any suggestions for the trays? Thanks and love your videos! Very well explained!

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would look into oil catch trays maybe or even cookie sheets from the dollar store. You could build trays with some wood frames and a piece of sheet metal (or even plywood probably). Hope that helps.

    how many birds do you keep at one time? Do you keep certain birds for breeding and eat the rest? How many eggs do you try and put in incubation?

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it varies a lot. Right now I have about 15 breeders. I usually don't keep birds from new hatches but about once a year I will grow some out as new breeders. When i do that I just keep the biggest birds. I generally incubate about 40 eggs at a time.
      I hope that helps.

    @Slighty red ned neck. Sorry to bombard you with question. As you know we are having terrible bushfires. If I can kindly ask for prayers it be great please. Thank you.
    I used treated timber. I need to use it as we have much termites around. I will be covering the timber with a few rows of samp oil and paint. Do quails peck alot at timber?
    Thanks

      I didn't know that. Prayers for you indeed. Sorry I am slow to respond and I hope you are doing ok.

      @@Slightlyrednecked I have build my quail hutch. It is not a master piece but it will do the work as a okay shelter for the quails. I'm buying more quails tomorrow. I got four. One male and three females. I try to to get another male and three females so they reduce the fighting . There is another guy who has a youtube channel called Aloha Quails. He mention to spay all the quails with a sprayer mix of water and vinegar!!! He said you can put as much as new quails as you like as you spray them all they have the same senses and it will confuse them. Therefore they dont fight. Have you done that experiment yourself?

    I noticed the enclosed area is smaller than the open area. What are their respective widths?

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't remember exactly. I thought I said in the video but couldn't find it easily (need to work on that in future videos I guess). I think it is 6 feet long and the center leg is at the 3 foot mark (from the open area side). So the closed in area is 6 inches shorter I guess. Hope that makes sense. It really isn't any kind of special measurement. Just roughly split the area roughly in half and they will be fine.

      Great. I start construction tomorrow.

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome. One more point. I would run the "legs" on the outside of the cage instead of the inside next time. It would make putting the hardware cloth on much easier as you wouldn't have to work around them. I hope that makes sense.

      In reality it could probably hold about 20. It is 18 square feet and you need about 1 square foot per bird but that is more like grow outs or something. I feel that is a little crowded for long term housing.
