- If you've traveled between Kelseyville and Lower Lake on Highway 29, odds are you've noticed that giant crack in the ground. Some call it a canyon, some call it a ditch some say it was a natural phenomenon. Today we are going to talk about the real story behind this little canyon on Manning Flat in Lake County, Ca.

I was just in Kelseyville a few days ago. I did not know about this construction. But, I ate at a place called the Saw Shop and it was very good.

I'm fairly new to Lake county but have had, previously as well as today, family members living here so I've been visiting on and off for 35+ years. I now live in Middletown and just stumbled onto this channel and I find it fascinating. Maybe someday you can explain why there are so many tremors around this area. Just a thought... Thank you and keep up the good work
The frequent tremors are caused by reinjection of water into steam wells on Cobb Mountain. The steam pressure started to go down in the 90's, and eventually they figured out that they could inject water into the steam field to replenish the pressure. Lake Co. Special Districts got on board, and a pipeline was constructed to pump treated waste water from the sewer plant up to the geysers. Then later, Sonoma County built one also. It's a win win, disposal of waste water for a useful cause, with the side effect of many (I've heard hundreds) of small tremors daily.
I'd like to hear more about the land that's contaminated with the mercury and how they go about cleaning it up. I read some where that the mercurys molecular structure changes when the fish ingest it
I live near the murcury mine and drive by it once in awhile... It is a fenced off area with plenty of notice to stay away in big red letter'! It look's like a pond or a small reservoir but the water/mercury is a turqois color... There is no wildlife near it! No duck's , No birds, Nothing lives near this mine... There is a road that has a view of it from up above and it look's like a beautiful pond but it is seriousely dangerouse! When I wanted to rent a house in this area it had a waiver to sign with a exemption from any liability of the owner of the house due to the potentially dangerous water supply that is so close to the mine... I would like to know how they would or could clean it up?
@@teresaspeakman5839 I am trying to find an article that explains alot but I cannot find it at this time I read some of the contaminated land was given to the native Americans. I guess the mercury is in the dirt and soil here's one link will find the other one. When it comes to this first we must understand the substance itself. Mercury is present worldwide. Mercury emissions generally disperse widely in the atmosphere before being deposited to the earth's surface. Mercury is emitted by natural sources, such as volcanoes, geothermal springs, geologic deposits, and the ocean. Humans also can cause the dispursement as well. Because we have the volcano and other geothermic systems we also have a natural presence of mercury. 95% of the mercury we find in fish is methylmercury which is where the molecular structure would be change but again its a natural occurrence. We find this mercury present in many fish we consume daily. That can of tuna? Just as harmful a large majority of fish that are present in the lake. If you watch my video about the fish in Clearlake at the end I talk about the mercury content that is issued by the health department for our area and show comparisons to help others understand. We use to have mercury mines that would extract the mercury from the land but they shut down many years ago. I hope this helps :)

Re Mercury: When I was a young boy my father and his best friend would hike up to 20 miles between Cloverdale and Lake County. Once There they would live of the land and mine Cinnabar. Then they would bring back all these boxes bags of rocks and put them in a smelter which would cook the mercury out of the rocks.
At this time we know there is no safe level however minute of mercury in the human body. One of the reasons they took it out of thermometers. And one of the reasons thermometers are also grab anymore. Lol.
You know what would be awesome, a story series about the original family's of lake county. You know like the family's that have area s and places named after them. That would so cool to learn about
I agree with this. Or families that have been here a long time. My folks have talked about coming on here. My dad was the government trapper for 20 years and mom was animal control and forestry. Both even worked on the ranches around the area.
That's awesome do a video on your family history in lake county first. I would love to hear it. Plus it would be a little easier research for you all so.
My mother in law knows TONS about old families and Lake county history. She located virtually all the graves in county cemeteries. She's on the Upper Lake cemetery board, and when she goes through the cemeteries, she'll comment and give history on various families.
Did you know that over a century ago, there was so much wife swapping along Middle Creek that it's nickname was "Diddle Creek"?

Seems to be a lot of crack in Lake County
Another bit of trivia is that Thurston Lake, which the fault spills into I think was once called Little Borax Lake at one time. And Thurston also has an abundance of what is known as wet gas otherwise known as natural gas. At one time as I recall one of the pioneers, it may have been Mr. Jago was using this gas for lights and heat but that didn't last long as this variety of gas is a bit unstable and hard to regulate. Others who tried to do the same quit when homes, barns and chicken coops kept burning down.🥵. Recently, Mike Epidendio bought the property and has been filling the "crack" up little by little.
I was wondering who was filling it up. I heard it was epidendio doing it. Wasn't yo sure tho.
I always heard that Little Borax was the small lake down at the Buckingham Golf Course.

According to the prolific Lake Co. Historian Henry Mauldin it's Thurston Lake. I have heard other Lakes in the county called "Little Borax" too.
Is that horrible smell coming off of Clear Lake ever going to be fixed?
So Thurston Lake is a closed system with no outlet. And this guy wanted to build a tunnel to feed that lake? I mean in a really wet year that could cause flooding to the people on the East side of the lake? Now most of it is seeping into the water table.
I want to see some stuff on blue lakes and cow mountain 🏔️
Soooo many stories around blue lakes. I will probably need to do multiple parts for that one.

There was actually TWO signs. One said Guy's fault and pointed in one direction- and the other one had a different person's name and pointed in the opposite direction. Wish we could remember then name of the other one.

bery cool! I remember me and my two boys exploring Guy’s Fault in the early 90’s. We pulled over on the roadside opposite the fault and crawled thru the culvert to the other side and into the start of the fault,which was pretty shallow at the time. As we walked thru the fault, it got deeper and deeper....and at one point, we must’ve been 40 feet deep it seemed. Se turned around after seeing a strange mass of somethings moving around sbout 30 feet away. It looked like a huge mass of insects of some sort and we hightailed it outta there! That was our Guys Failt adventure. A friend of my older boy went there not much later and found a big spearhead. Always wanted to see that thing😀
Not long ago, I took my wife out there to show her where we crawled outta the culvert and into the fault.....and to my huge surprise....the fault entrance had eroded 10 feet below the culvert!!’

How old is that wall behind you? Those bricks are irregular and one layer starts very narrow and ends up much thicker as it progresses.
I live much further South and wish I had more surface or ground water.
