      It’s cool for sure, but for me the exceptionalness of the scene hinges more on the dialogue that precedes it.
      It’s Vader threatening to corrupt Leia to the dark side that sets Luke off: he’s motivated both by selfless desire to protect someone he cares about from being in his current predicament *and* the toxic fear/doubt that Leia might not be able to resist the dark side or otherwise take care of herself. It’s a complex emotional trigger - doubt and stress becoming rage - that has us, the audience, cheering for Luke to ‘get the bad guy’ while also understanding that whether or not he’s doing the right thing, what he’s doing isn’t so healthy.
      Also, the music 😩

    I’m an old fan of sci fi debris and it’s always refreshing to know exactly what a 6 of 10 means from him. Plus his take on psycho Janeway is the best.
    I totally see why you’ve elevated Jedi over Empire, but it’s ever going to be the other way for me. The Throne Room scenes in Jedi are some of the best if not the best character driven drama in the whole series, and the fight at the Pit of Carkoon is awesome fun, but the silliness of the Jabba’s palace antics, the shoehorning of revelations like Leia bring Luke’s twin and killing off Jabba, boba, Yoda, Vader and the emperor as well as the third act revolving around another assault on another Death Star just takes the whole movie down a peg. Empire was different, had new environments, easily the best cinematography of the series (that dolly shot in Jedi tho), and the overall sense of our heroes being dogged by Vader the entire movie are just a few of the reasons why it’s technically the better movie, even if the script ends in a non-resolution.

    I agree with your assessment of the original trilogy. I recently rewatched the despecialised versions, and out of the three I think A New Hope is the strongest, simply because it has a complete arc. It actually moved at a quicker pace than I remember, and I truly enjoyed it. The sequels kind of got bogged down in the larger story - which is fine! They just didn't work as well for me as individual films.

    Haha I loved the faint laughing at the end of the intro.
    I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts about Empire and you make some good points about contrivance I had not considered before. However, I'm curious to hear your thoughts on why some of the contrivance in Jedi isn't as incriminating to you. To me, the start of Jedi could always be described as "A hero joins Jabba as a spy, just so that another hero duo can enter his palace to save the day, but instead get captured, so that another hero duo can enter the palace and save the day, but instead get captured, so that another hero can enter the palace and save the day, but instead get captured, so that all of the heroes can save the day from the inside, all for the purpose of saving Han from Jabba's capture." I would be really interested on what you think about those scenes.
    Great video as always, Slugger!

    • @RRSlugger
      @RRSlugger  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re definitely right to point that out - to me, the difference is that the questionable throughline in Empire pulls me out of the film *as I’m watching it* whereas this bit of clunky logic in Jedi only really annoys me in retrospect. I’m still able to *engage* with Jedi in a way that I seem to be incapable of with Empire, if that makes sense?

    • @izer0z
      @izer0z ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RRSlugger That makes sense to me! I personally think the start of Jedi pulls me out of the film a little bit, but will probably not bother me as much as the issues in Empire your point out just because the starting scenes are exciting, fun, and the contrivance ends as soon as they're over. Really appreciate the response. To me, Han's ship being constantly under repair and out of hyperspace gas feels in character for him, even if they've been alone doing nothing for three years. But I don't think I'll ever be able to rewatch the film without wondering how on Earth Luke landed right next to Yoda since you've pointed it out haha.

      @@RRSlugger Haha it works for some, but I've always found that type of excuse to be narratively lacking. It's like saying "because magic" in any narrative including non-scientific fantasy. I think the most satisfying excuse, which is not to say that it's satisfying, is to simply say "it has to be that way for the story". Which I think sounds lame but is at least a bit more honest than other contrived nonsense haha.

    I really appreciate the nuance in your videos. Another great feature of the Slugometer over the out-of-10 system I feel is that it allows for a lot more nuanced discussion: "Why does one person feel this set falls short of the rest", where as an out-of-10 system seems to spiral into the same thing repeated over and over again when no one wants to rate anything under a 6 unless everyone else already thinks that. Definitely looking to see a return of the Slugometer in the future!

I couldn’t stay awake for Empire Strikes Back as a kid.

    There are two rating systems i saw that I really liked. One was on letterboxd where you have half a star up to five stars and one guy I saw used these stars like this: 1 star- never watching again, 2 stars- I dont seek to watch it again, 3 stars- I would watch it again, 4 stars- one of my favourites and 5 stars- I make you watch it with me. I really liked that.
    The other one is a small german youtuber. He has 1 to 8 points. 8 point is something like "watch it in cinema", 7 is "watch it if you are interested", 6 is "watch it on blu ray", 5 is "watch it on tv eventually", 4 is "watch it with friends with a beer" and so on. I dont remember the exact scoring. Both I really liked

    With Star Wars, the Force is a perfectly good explanation for plot armor, up to a point. Like, a Jedi, with their strong connection with the Force, not getting hit by blaster shots could be explained as something of a passive Force ability of some sort. But, a character with a supposedly low connection to the Force, like Han Solo, not getting hit can't be so easily explained away. Sometimes it's more situational, like when they escaped the Death Star after rescuing Leia, the Stormtroopers were ordered to let them escape because they had planted a tracking device, resulting in them "missing", or at least that's the going theory. You don't need the Force to explain away every inconsistency.

    Return is my favorite of the OT specifically because it manages to juggle so much; Luke tossing the lightsaber away to me is the single best moment of the entire saga; and I love how him doing that puts everything else into place so that the good guys win.
    Also, if you don't like Ewoks, i'm sorry, i can't help your cold dead heart.
    But my favorite sequence in the whole saga is the last 10-20 minutes of Revenge of the Sith; I love both hearbreaking and beautiful it is. probably my favorite montage in any movie; crosscutting the death of the republic, his love, his life with Anakin's rebirth as a frankenstein's monster; then the beauty of the future; the rise of a New Hope.

    The best thing about any TH-cam ranking system is that none of them really matter. Not saying that as a slight (as a fellow ranker), but since pretty much everyone is presenting their subject by the authority of themself, there isn't any real right or wrong behind the reasoning. I've found new appreciation for themes I never gave a second thought to after seeing them ranked against other things I'm familiar with.
    ALSO... and I hate that I feel the need to speak on this.. BUT HERE'S MY TWO CENTS ON ONE OF YOUR POINTS ABOUT YOUR INCORRECT OPINION ON EMPIRE. The issue isn't that "Han can't fix his ship," it's that "Han is fixing his own ship." He's based off the classic "cool guy," and every classic cool guy has an old car they are constantly working on. He doesn't take it to a shop to get it fixed, he doesn't trash it when it probably should be trashed.. he diagnoses it and tries to fix it.. WHILE ESCAPING AND GETTING SHOT AT! That's just cool. Even at the end when Lando's crew was supposed to finish the repairs, Han already new what it needed.
    Anyway, good video. I always like Star Wars debates and I'll play either side.

    9:27 A better question why isn't the slug o meter factual? Like in my 10 years of being press showing off thousands of video games and hundreds of unboxed things I keep my rating system of "Is it worth it or not and but why?" To the facts with very little opion and I let my bias be known... Why? It's what my audience wants and expects as they want to know should they spend their hobby dollar on it or not. Which as far as I know cold hard cash is very facula so should be rating systems then inform purchasing decisions.

    • @RRSlugger
      @RRSlugger  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But stating whether or not “something is worth it” is, in itself, an opinion. To be completely honest, I find *that* system to be even more subjective than just ranking the sets against each other like I do here, as not everyone is going to have the same relationship with money to judge its “worth”.
      There’s nothing factual about me saying the new LEGO DeLorean is “worth it” if the price tag on it is unthinkable for some viewers, if that makes sense?

    • @GreenBlueWalkthrough
      @GreenBlueWalkthrough ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RRSluggerTrue and how I do it is compare everything to everything in the modern day using experience and again facts like piece count, completion time, Number of prints/unique peices, content, Mini figs, graphics, is it a possible investment but I rarely need to go outside of it's direct compation... While yes to some free is the only option when video games are concerned does not mean that factually all $1 dollar games are not worth it to the rest of the veiwsers? And that is unfair to people who can pay that and the companies that made them and really the industry/community as a whole as all industries have standards like 100 pieces for $10 for lego...Which I'm this way because my audnce wants to know the facts like how it compaires to other things for the money and why. That is just my niche much like the slug o meter is yours which we are not so different in how we use our meters very similarly to the viewer anyway as we add "but" to the end. So my meter is less a score then a friend telling a friend should they buy it and why.

    I feel Star Wars works best when the villains are on top and the heroes seem on the edge of losing everything. Even if the heroes win it comes at considerable effort and cost. This is best exemplified by: A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Andor, Rogue One, Solo, and Revenge of the Sith.
    Return of the Jedi is undone for me by the Ewoks. Cute is fine but like my adorable Cat they needed a vicious side. Chewbacca works because he's adorable but piss him off and he's terrifying. The ewoks just come off as bumbling and dorky, it undermines the other story threads.

Quantitative scoring systems can be useful, but you are right that they are too often thrown around with little thought given to what they represent. Despite what you may think, I’ve always thought that you’ve been very conscientious about making the audience understand how you’re using the Slugometer.
    And as for Empire, I’ve always felt the same. It may be better in certain ways, such as in the cinematography, but the narrative is much too loose and feels like it spends a lot of its runtime spinning its wheels. It may have some of the trilogy’s highest points, but it doesn’t work as well as a complete film as much as A New Hope or Jedi.

    Regarding the 10 scale grading. Just recently, as an example: a Star Wars set has a lot of inconsistencies in regards to the movie, is smaller and more expensive than its previous iterations. A reviewer names all of it, mostly criticizes the set and still gives it 7 out of 10. Never understood it, unless it's financial benefit, of course.

    None of this is really set in stone as I would have to watch all the movies again but here:
    How I would rate the film's quality is either Empire, New Hope, Jedi or NH, Empire, Jedi (Though, I have not seen Jedi in a while, planning on watching it sometime soon.) I do remember Empire being the best written, though I would say A New Hope is more solid (as in, it is a good standalone film).
    Can not make a point on Jedi as I only really remember the second half and the opening it still has the greatest ending out of all of them. It is incredibly emotionally fueled and filled with character payoffs, just really well done. Not the best choreographed fight in the series (That award goes to one of the ones in the prequels, though I can not remember any specifically.) it is the best when it comes to importance to the story and how much it gets us to care about it.
    Welp, done with my semi-structured ramblings. I love movies and I really like Star Wars, good bye.

    0-10 makes sense when you're comparing a larger assortment that falls under the same category, such as "Relative To All Lego Sets Ever (even the ones I have never held in my hands before)" or "Every Movie I Have Ever Seen (based on my memory regardless of my age and experience at the time of viewing)".
    Personally I think 0-4 is a good metric if you prefer 0 to match the meaning of "so bad it has no redeeming features" or 1-5 if you prefer 3 representing the middle as it somehow feels more balanced in the middle than 2 does. But practically it is the same as going with a 3 point system because 0 and 4 (or 1 and 5 depending on your preference) are just the extremes used to set the parameters and should basically never be used as it would denote something as perfection - perfectly bad or perfectly good.
    Anyhow, the way you have rated the sets seems the most fair as you interact with every single set within the theme before rating them against each other, rather than rating sets as you go (which has the problem of requiring retroactively updating previous ratings to keep the numbers relevant, and which most reviewers typically don't do). Although personally I would prefer a little more nuance, so 0-6 where you only use 1-5 would be better.
    Lastly, I also just want to point out that making 1 red, 2 yellow, and 3 green is a bit misleading imo as the color skews the impression of the actual rating a bit (1 doesn't have to be a bad score, just a worse score, but the red color makes me instinctively think its a bad score).
    But ultimately, my opinion doesn't matter; you do what unhinges you the most. I'm just here for the slander and hot takes. 🤣

    all of the SW movies have both highs and lows, and ultimately, I think most of them just kind of transcend issues. They're all just... too iconic to really judge fairly in any capacity, good or bad.

      That's probably why it was removed though - to leave us in suspense a while longer. They did account for this in the script, but since it was removed in editing, I think your criticism is still valid. The explanation didn't end up in the movie. 👍
