  • Retired Gen. Frank McKenzie, the former commander of the U.S. forces in the Middle East, writes in a new book that the withdrawal from Afghanistan, which was negotiated under former President Donald Trump and implemented under President Biden, was "one of the worst negotiating mistakes by the U.S." Both presidents, McKenzie tells "Face the Nation," shared a policy objective of leaving Afghanistan, regardless of the consequences."
"Face the Nation" is America's premier Sunday morning public affairs program. The broadcast is one of the longest-running news programs in the history of television, having debuted Nov. 7, 1954, on CBS. Every Sunday, "Face the Nation" moderator and CBS News senior foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan welcomes leaders, newsmakers, and experts to a lively round table discussion of current events and the latest news.

I think going into Afghanistan with brigades and regiments was a horrible mistake. We should have fought that war with special forces and pinpoint strikes. Instead, we did the worst thing possible, we started occupying a land that is impossible to occupy, from Alexander the Great, to Great Britain, to the USSR. But it sure made a lot of money for the contractors and politicians, which, as the war in Ukraine has shown, was the point all along.

There was never a 'clean' way to get out of Afghanistan. The decision was stay or leave and while you can argue the policy, the result was always going to be the Taliban's return to power.
