- Gord Downie, the Tragically Hip frontman, is dead at 53 after a battle with brain cancer. Downie became a Canadian icon, despite the band never finding mainstream success outside the country.

Over 3 years after he's gone I'm tearing up watching a video of someone Ive never met but known most of my life who I feel I know like a close friend. Thank you friend.

I live here in Oklahoma. I got to see the Hip in 95 at Kemper Arena in Kansas City. They were opening for Jimmy Page and Robert plant during their "No Quarter: UnLedded" tour. I became a fan of the Hip that night. Raising a glass to our neighbors in the Great White North. Believe me when I say, though they might not have "made it" here in the states, there are pockets of us all over the U.S. that miss him greatly, and we mourn with you.
Saw them for the first time in like 91 or 92 in Pensacola, Florida on what I guess was the Road Apples tour as they opened for Eric Johnson. They blew me away and I became a huge fan instantly. I caught them live on every subsequent tour up until 2000. The advantage of catching them live in the States was that there was never more than a couple of thousand of people in the audience
Another Okie here that loves the Hip! I was sooo lucky to have seen them in Montreal and Burlington VT. I lived 30 miles south of the border at the time and their music was a big part of my life. I cried like a baby the day he died. Gord was family.

@@MrAustinpen that’s a neat story. I saw The Hip, I have to really think about how many times. I’ve seen them in Detroit Grand Rapids Chicago Rochester Hills. I lived in Alaska when this concert happened or I would’ve traveled to Toronto. My friends back then got me into the tragically hip and it was the thing to follow them around if they were in the area. I met Gordon once. It was in Chicago after the show. He was standing outside the bus and it was really cool. Nice guy. Class act. It’s amazing I don’t listen to them as often as I used to but I can remember every lyric. This band encapsulated 10 years of my life and each song has a different meaning.

I an American from Michigan and been listening and enjoying Tragically Hip music for decades. Rest In Peace to a great singer, songwriter, poet and friend to many. I loved your and your great band mates music for decades. Will be truly missed, how sad, taken too soon. I will never forget you, Gord Downie!!!
Lived in Detroit for 40 years and we loved TTH. Moved south and turned on many to this wonderful music.
Well let me tell you as one from the old US of A. Anyone from the US who never saw the beauty in TTH can never call themselves a true fan of music. Being from Buffalo originally , and witnessing many Hip shows I thank you Canada for sharing your beautiful treasure with this Buffalo boy. The Tragically Hip's music will forever live in this guys heart....RIP Gord, you are truly missed......

Im 21 years old I live 2 hours away from where gord grew up, i was only 15 when he passed i knew they were big and had a couple good songs but i never really came around to their full story until now and listening to every song just the music is enough to blow your mind but when you hear the lyrics it feels like your floating on a lake in northern Ontario with the sun setting listening to gord. Cant put it into words thats my best shot. More people need to know about gord and the hip🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦❤️❤️❤️
Discovered the Hip at Edenfest in 1996…my friends and I drove up from New York for the 3 day concert/festival. From the opening of their song “Grace too” I was instantly hooked…. I have always felt so lucky to have encountered “Canada’s secret.” I traveled many more times to see them live. I sincerely miss Gord. I so hoped to be able to take my son to experience them live. I share the memories now instead. 💜
54 years old here in 2018 and I am just now discovering this band... That is what is wrong with radio. I will be digging further into their music because I read a comment saying they opened for Jimmy Page and Robert Plant and then I saw the Indians given them thanks and that speaks volumes about the quality of what I am about to discover. Yay! He was awesome... my brother played drums with them a few times...we all grew up together, them in Kingston, us in an Ottawa suburb... seen them so many times 15 at least.....Awesome always.....
They weee pretty much Canada’s ‘Midnight Oil’. History, music and social conscience.

Canada’s best, hands down. I still listen to them with tears of joy and pain. I took a while to let go of Gord. Thanks guys. You gave us more than you know.
I got to know TTH here in Sweden finding Trouble at the henhouse in a used CD shop in Stockholm. I was intrigued and fell in love with the voice of the band. Gord still moves my heart and brings me hope that I one day will become a better person. Thanks Gord.

I was lucky to have seen the Hip twice. The Tragically Hip was the soundtrack to my life in the 90's......Nobody here in Oklahoma even knows who the are. Watching their last concert online was a very emotional experience for me.

They were/are somewhat popular overhere in The Netherlands, that’s why we’ve been so lucky to see them play small venues many times. I miss those days.
His lyrics were spun gold, no better song writer then Gord. 100th meridian is a lyrical genius. Rest well, Gord, you have earned it.

Became a Hip fan around 1991 when I moved to northern NY. Heard them on a Canadian radio station that I often listened to. Saw them play live more times than any other band. So much fun and great music. Sad that it’s over.
Pls don't dislike the passing of this great man because he made a big impact for us Canadians
It doesn’t matter that much whether Americans discovered them. Canadians loved Gord enough to make up for anything. Remarkable man.

I remember seeing this band in NYC years ago, they were great! If this was a US band, this comment section would be filled with racial and homophobic slurs. Cool how a country can set aside petty differences for a while and honor one of their own. _envy_
Thanks again for your kindness. Our Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, was a close personal friend of Gordie and he took the loss hard. Mr. Trudeau made some televised public comments and he was in tears. You wouldn't believe (or maybe you would) the nasty slurs and personal attacks against our PM because he (gasp) dared show emotion in public at the loss of a friend and incredible Canadian. It just made me ill.

Rip to the legend❤ the first time i heard the hip was driving to me and my late grandpas favorite camping spot. The hip will always have a special place in my heart.
I still tear up watching videos to this day. I saw them twice in Erie Pa and loved their raw live energy and still consider the Hip one of my best concert experiences. I am a Northeastern American in PA. The band was very loved in upper New York and Pa.

So remember, he's is watching over us and laughing very loudly at any trolls trying to stir up anger and hate. There's no room for negative reactions regarding Mr.Downie's legacy. I love and will miss you, Sir. (And thank you, Gord, for not getting mad when I mistakenly referenced you as our Canadian REM. You were so gracious in the'80s.) I live in Ohio but was lucky enough to have a radio station in my area 97X that played the Tragically Hip.
I can remember for year every time The Hip came up in conversation here in Canada the same question got asked,.."why the hell haven't these guys exploded in the states yet" ... we never came up with a good answer ... it just made us embraced them all the more as Canada's greatest musical secret .... much love to Gord's family and all you Hip fans out there
Hard to see him so weak. 💔 Gord and Paul were the cool big brothers of the kids in our high school. Having lived in both Ktown and NW Ontario during childhood, and seeing the issues up close (!), I’m so proud of Gord for using his final months (!) to ask for social justice on colonialism, Chanie, FN peoples, reconciliation, etc.

I grew up in Massena NY right on the Canadian border I grew up on the hip, used to listen to 106.9 the Bear and chez 106.1 both out of Ottawa Ontario, we are going to miss you Gord! ❤

I never heard of him till now, I was a young boy during they’re rising success and popularity. Sad loss it seems regardless, and unfortunately people aren’t seen, heard, or appreciated until they sadly pass. 🥀😣💫 May he continuously Rest In Peace always “moving work” he did for The First Nations. 🙏🏾
America missed out. But I think the reason the hip never caught on there is that their music was just so CANADIAN. So many songs based on Canadian history, they were just the epitome of Canadas band. I’m glad they never got big down there. It ruined so many unique Canadian bands like our lady peace. They changed their sound to be more appealing to the mainstream. Gord is and will always be a Canadian legend RIP to the beautiful Canadian poet with a big heart

You CANNOT judge the past by modern standards, to do so is guaranteeing what you think is OK today is wrong tomorrow.
You CANNOT pick a point in time and say everything before this is relative, and everything before it is NOT............................The first nations tribe were NOT the first man to be on this continent, and they conquered it from those before.
While I love the Tragically Hip, they should stay OUT of politics and stick to making music.
