It is not a rock documentary but a deeply personal journey about music, fame, Canada, and loss. A brilliant work and should get the Oscar. Thank you to the Hip and all the families for this gift

The Hip were (ARE) a National Treasure!
They gave us so many years of greatness, and even in the end, Gordie and the band gifted the fans with a goodbye tour! AMAZING!!! Thank you so much to Mike Downie for making this Doc.
Gordie and the Hip will never be forgotten!

Thank you so much for creating this beautiful documentary. And thank you for trying to explain grief. It is so challenging. My husband and I were huge fans of The Tragically Hip. My husband passed away from lung cancer one week before the documentary aired on Prime. It has been so cathartic for me. I've watched all four episodes twice now and I know I will watch it again and again. I'm not sure if I will ever get past losing my husband of 50 years. I was 21 when we got married and I'm 72 now. We only saw the Hip live once, in St. Catharines and it was amazing. My sympathy to your entire family and to all of Canada on the loss of your brother. If I had a wish, I'd wish for more of this. 💔

Thanks for sharing. I just found out 2 weeks ago that I have throat cancer and I'm really scared. I saw The Hip at least a dozen times and even interviewed them once on Canada Day in Ottawa. They were pretty new, I didn't even know who they were. I was a very young radio announcer who lucked into getting the assignment. All they told me was I'd be interviewing Gord and Gord and I was like, really? This band has 2 Gord's? That's about all I knew about them. That and they had just played the most high-energy incredible set and now I was pumped as F to get to talk to them. I was a huge fan forever after that. What a week for this doc to come out. I've only watched episode 1 so far. I'll watch the other 3 tonight. I really don't want to die yet. I hope you're doing ok, trite as that sounds. Peace.

@@canadaisruledbyclowns7188 good luck. it can be beaten. my mother has been fighting it for years. hers started as ovarian, was treated and almost beaten. unfortunately, it metastasized and spread to her stomach and lung lining, as well as her brain. none of this was found out about until a day before my wedding to my childhood sweetheart. we got her into a hospital in New Mexico, where the wedding was taking place, and a fine doctor with stubby fingers and a grapefruit spoon got her brain tumour out. i was there when she awoke from the surgery. there was a lot of fear about how she would be post surgery..... i mean, someone is poking around the back side of your brain and maybe an extra mm here or there and you have to learn how to walk again.... anyway, she woke from the operation, looked at me, focused on me, and said, 'disappointing you is getting me down.' she was totally fine. when she returned to Toronto, she had a lot of follow up at Sunnybrook. i had, for her first round of chemo, bought her a 'jaws' tshirt. she would wear it in everytime she went, and get the odd knowing nod. well, when she went to Sunnybrook for her brain stuff, she had the same doctor as Gord. he never said anything about it, but he knew. she still wears that shirt, every friday.
mate..... keep positive. keep your head up. it can be beaten. fuck cancer.

Thank you so much, Mike Downie, for this incredibly beautiful documentary. Somehow I missed noticing The Hip when they first hit the big time, probably because I was a new mother and had no time to listen to the radio. It wasn't until their final tour in 2016 that I first really listened to their music. This documentary fills in the many pieces I missed from not being a fan earlier, particularly the incredible lyrics that tell so many stories about our Canada. How I wish I'd listened to them so much earlier and had a chance to see them perform live. I understand grief having lost my husband suddenly almost 6 years ago, and your opening comments about grief are so painfully accurate. I appreciate you putting your grief on public display to make sure this documentary tells their story so poignantly.

I had the strangest experience with this film/doc. Normally I DEVOUR content I really love. I've been waiting for this for MONTHS. I watched the 1st ep in one single play. The 2nd and 3rd eps I kept pausing it to do the most unnecessary shit. Start laundry. Run to the grocery. Answer a bunch of messages. It wasn't because I wasn't engaged, I was SOOO engaged...but I was drawing it out. I didn't want it to end. Strangest still, the 4th ep, I couldn't bring myself to start it. Kept finding reasons to put it off. When I finally realized what I was doing I turned off my phone. Made a cup of tea. And VERY purposefully watched the final episode treasuring every single second, even as I knew it was coming to it's inevitable end. I'll be processing and thinking about this (and probably rewatching) for the rest of the year. So well done. Exceeded every expectation I had. 💖💖💖💖💖

It's funny, I've been prolonging this series myself dragging it out in attempt to savor it completely.

@@jerrycurlz84 I can not think of many documentaries, or really ANY form of content that I was SOOOO excited to see, and yet soooo conflicted about how and when to do it. I've also yet to go back and re-watch any of it, though that is coming. Lastly, I drive for a living and my playlists are survival tools for me; I've listened to The Hip (and Gord side work) only since release of NO DRESS REHEARSAL. Thank you for confirming that there are others who also had a unique experience when it came to watching this. 💖💖🫶💖💖

A very long time Hipster here. I really felt what Mike was saying. In fact just prior to watching this vid in a relatable sense losing a sibling, I was looking up to the stars while in out on the deck (often do this) and said hello to my sis💜…also to Gord 💫💜 I speak his given & Indigenous names. Said I will love them always. Grief remains. As Mike stated some days it’s quiet and other days, not so much (not quoted) and I agree on a deep level. So far, Ep 1 & 2 brought back what the band meant to me early on… so much fun, emotional at other times, new info and feeling such pride. A few chuckles, absolutely! So much appreciation in how it would have been not only highly emotional, but packing in a 30 + yrs journey in 4.0 or so hours?!? An amazing watch thus far and not sure about Ep readiness. Congratsb on the award and so deservedly earned 👏🏻🙏🏼❤️💜🎶🤘🏻

My heart goes out to him. This is a very good description of grief - it is a lot like a new organ that just stays. - I lost my amazing dad unexpectedly in 2019 and while we were still grappling with that, my sister to brain cancer in 2021. She was gone in 5 months, but I was able to spend more than half my time in her province looking after her. She couldn’t walk or speak through most of that. It still haunts me, grabs me at expected moments. Driving. Hearing a familiar song. Sibling loss is devastating. You know you will likely have to deal with the loss of parents in mid life but my little sister, no.

Just finished your series Mike, Wow! In the 80s I was taken by a promoter friend to concerts to keep her company and boost her up before she spoke with the musicians or whatever that job was to report to Sam's. I was a chef that did riders for bands etc so gave her tips to keep her sh!t together not going googoo being star struck. You captured what I saw in these guys when they were just starting out so beautifully, it's the first times I saw them (I never missed them in the early years) those are the memories I hold dear to heart and fear forgetting how happy I was when things I thought about came out of Gords mouth to our bands amazing music. I talked about The Hip to all. I'd tell my kids you'll get to see The Hip when you get bigger (because there was always booze around back then) When the Hip started the big concerts and festival stuff my kids were so happy to finally jump around with all us. Thanks for doing all that work it's a treasure

Saw The Hip at the old Ontario Place Forum when Road Apples was released, with my brother, when tickets fell in our laps at the last minute. Already knew their music but were instant fans. For a variety of reasons, never saw them again, but they were so Canadian in their approach, no matter where they recorded. I look forward to catching this, seeing the good, the bad and the ugly, and how they ended as a band of brothers who love one another. The fact the film stayed in the family on solidifies that.
