Thanks for making this video! This is my favorite pattern as it is all I use for airsoft. One quick correction though is that the real usage of red was not for absorbing infrared light (that is what the black "drips" were for), but rather to increase its effectiveness from a distance. This is because the color red has the longest wavelength of light making it the hardest color for the human eye to identify. From a distance it becomes a brownish color (which blends in the best with almost any vegetation), which is why during WW2 it was to fill the role as a Universal pattern. Early Multicam.

I live in Wisconsin USA and up here this uniform does extremely well in mixed deciduous/pine forests in every season but winter. I was told (I don’t know if it’s true or not) that the subconscious mind needs to see red to be comfortable in an environment where red is a part of the landscape. Its not just a “autumn/fall“ camo. Many bushes and the branches of those bushes are a deep red or maroon. The ice blue in my set matches perfectly with the moss growing at the base on most of the many pine trees in the North Woods of The Great Lakes region.

I'm from Ontario and now live in BC -- there are parts of the Canadian Shield with pink/red igneous rock exposed, and along with autumn foliage, sometimes new leaves have a reddish tinge. Then there are trees/shrubs like red osier dogwood and arbutus, where it comes out in the bark. I had thought that this camo pattern would stand out, but it's interesting how well it can work. (Especially at a distance.)

I had a Alpenflage jacket that I had picked up at a Bike rally years ago. it was brilliant. the hood was so big you could wear a helmet underneath it. I think the only critique of the jacket I had was that you had to balance the jacket properly if you wore it with the clip on rucksack. if the ruck sack (i used it for work) was full you needed something in the 2 large front pockets to counter balance or the top of the zip pressed uncomfortably against your throat. thats if you even needed the rucksack, the pockets are so damned big and you have so many of them you can fit everything into just the jacket!
it was also big enough that during the winter I could comfortably wear a thick woolly hooded jumper underneath the jacket as extra insulation. I didnt buy a new winter coat for 5 years because of that jacket.

The outfit was suppose to hold:
6 full Magazines for the Fass57 in the breast pockets
6 hand grenades HG43 in the leg pockets
2 rifle grenades 58 in the backpack, also known as Gazarusa or Karusa
assorted equipment in various other pockets and a breadpack attached to the packpack.
In the end the poor bloke was carrying around something like 20 kgs of equipment including his personal weapon, the Fass57.
With all that stuff packed the backpack had little weight shifting influence but also it was rather uncomfy to walk around.
Final touch, in 1983 we got the flack jackets that were supposed to fit under the vest and we were issued the "static troop" model weighing 17 kgs, I was a Heavy Mortarman, the 12 cm stuff.

Honestly this camo works very well in Europe in most conditions. The reds look more like browns at any reasonable distance and blend in very well with the ground and tree bark. It is especially effective in autumn/winter (when it isn't snowing) but it works surprisingly well even in spring/summer.
You just have to remember most camo is meant to be viewed from a distance so while it might look slightly weird from up close once you're 50 yards away its very effective

They added black for infrared threats not the red. No one used black in camo before that. You can see how they added the black to some splinter splinter camo zeltbahn when night vision hit the scene. Some SS smocks appeared to have black but were in fact originally designated 'carbon' colors of very dark greens or browns that became black to do wartime shortages of quality fabric dye.. The Wehrmacht and SS were switching to Liebermuster as a universal 4 season camo with night vision defying properties, (The black) .. The red was added to soften the brown and to give it a sustained pattern at distance so it kept its camo ability at distances unlike other camo patterns that morph into a solid color at distance..

From what I understand the Alpenflage pattern was chosen because Swiss military strategists were convinced that if the soviets were to attack during the cold war, it would take place in the Fall, thus their reason for choosing an autumn pattern, this seems to be the same tactical choice the Belgians made by using a purple/yellow dominant pattern in their jigsaw. This "one season" pattern choice also makes sense given the cold war tactic of the Swiss military, which was to hold out in the low lands as long as needed to allow for the population and military to retreat to the alps and resist from there. There, the swiss military had a different uniform for mountain combat which is mostly OD green.

Switzerland, West Germany, Czechoslovakia and Spain all used Leibermuster, with Czechoslovakia using different shapes when compared ot the others.
Swiss, SS and Spanish Leibermuster used long shapes, with the black overprint especiallly having a shape like the black shapes on birch skin.
The base fabric is the bottom layer, with some examples having white spots and splotches, with green overprint sometimes going on top of these splotches.
TAZ90 is simply a "frozen" version with no overprint effects.
Oh, if I'd ever get the tiles for all the overprints...

    • @lisakado
      @lisakado ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes -- I'm on the west coast where it rains a lot at certain times of the year. Cotton's definitely a hypothermia risk -- plus mildew if you haven't got a place to dry out the gear. A friend who works with unhoused people asked if I could come up with packs to hold their possessions ... while it may be convenient for them to be able to have jackets with big pockets like these ones, rather than packs that could be stolen, I've had to tell her that the cotton could be a problem, at least in the rainy season.

Also most animals cant see the colour red (its greenish for them and blends in with the surroundings), while for humans the colour red is just at the edge of the wavelength for what we can see. So it is effective but at some distance, while tigers get pretty close to their victim to be able to eat them. Either way i commend the Germans for coming up with such effective camouflage during wartime.

I own the hat. I've seen the jacket that mounted pack and pockets for all the gear at surplus store about 20 years ago. I never heard it called the four fruit pattern. I've always known as the minestrone pattern. The one big thing about that pattern was that it was never released into the public. The uniform had to be returned to the government. The line of thinking was that the Swiss didn't want the uniform getting into the hands of an invading force and then would be able to blend in with legitimate Swiss forces. Before they changed the pattern the complete uniform would sell for $1500 and up. That was back in the 80s so you may as well quadruple that by today's prices. I think I've seen every piece in a surplus store now. Most of it barely used.

Camouflage Designers: Who in their right mind would use the colour red on their patterns?! Red doesn’t naturally occur in landscapes.
Australian Outback: I’m about to end this mans whole career.

A rare glimpse of Lieberemuster can be seen in the 1955 Czechoslovakian film made about the World War II Eastern Front titled "The Tank Brigade. "Three thousand members of the Czechoslovak People's Army participated in the film." This lends credence that the uniform printing equipment was located in Czechoslovakia. Maybe even during WWII as it appears only a few German units in Slovakia and the Balkans were issued Liebermuster. See it here - th-cam.com/video/rA36zkrbDug/w-d-xo.html

Yeah while western Germany and Prussia was occupied by the Allies, parts of Central Europe was still held by the Germans. i don't know why we got to rationalise it as Czechs getting the machines used for this camo after the war instead of Germans establishing it in annexed territory from the beginning
