  • We're covering another highly requested topic in this one with Sweden's M90 aka splinter camouflage.
Note: The scaling down of the FOA to create the M90 was described with a 1:66 ratio which means it was scaled down quite a bit more than 33%.

That's what happens when you try to pronounce something in another accent. You can hear the missing "swedish sounds". When speaking, use your own accent. IE: The way americans pronounce Iraq.

When I did my service in 1997-98 we had to “earn the M90” which meant that we wore the M59 during the first weeks of training. After a hard week in the woods which ended with a long march, we were taken back to base, were given chocolates and our new uniforms and then we watched “die hard” in the projector hall. What a delight! And the uniform felt really fresh after that.

In my obviously anecdotal experience from being a squad leader in the Swedish amphibious batallions (akin to a slightly tougher version of the US marines), the M90 camp is indeed highly effective. I remember at one point while on an exercise in the Stockholm archipelago, when I was about 20-30 meters out from shore in our squad boat, with a part of the platoon still ashore, positioned at a rocky outcrop with some sparse lower vegetation of the island we were leaving. Most soldiers we’re standing up in plain view, yet, even though I KNEW that they were there I had difficulty finding some of them at first. They just completely blended in to the greyish background. That’s when I realised that the M90 is a really really good camouflage.
Same thing with our camo nets we used to hide boats when shored up and tents while ashore. At one point, we have covered off a larger area (some 30-40 m2 perhaps), with the back against a large bushy section. Again, even though I was standing close (less than 50 meters), I simply couldn’t make out where the bush started and the camo net ended. I do believe those are the nets manufactured by Barracuda and which are sold worldwide.

The image on 7:03 was during a state visit to Russia after fall of Soviet Union. The reason was because of the Goverment and the Swedish Armed Forces wanted to aquire a new MBT. One of those tanks which were on the list of consideration was the T-80U MBT. Though after testing several other MBT's, they decided to choose the Leopard 2A4/A5 as the new MBT for the Swedish Armed Forces.

@Gerd Wiesler I suspect the trails of the T-80U tank was in large part a way to gain information on it and not a serious consideration. The T-80U available later than the other thanks. The government published that they would purchase Lepard 2 before the planned test of T-80U was finished and them to be canceled as Russia wanted the tanks back. I would consider that an intelligence screwup.

    • @urban3921
      @urban3921 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@Gerd Wiesler To clarify: The tank project was one high end tank for the armoured brigades and a cheaper tank for the mechanised brigades, so it could have been 120 Abrams or Leopard 2S plus T-80U, but Germany offered a really good leasing deal for 160 Leopard 2A4.

Quick and dirty translations: 3:47: The bars to the right represents the hit probability against the figures pictured above. The figure to the far left is wearing the old "grey brown green" field uniform and the next figure the same uniform but patterned with elements of blue color. The third from the left is masked according to a conventional foreign pattern, while the figure on the far right ha received the FOA combat clothing with combined pattern for near and far effect. As is seen, the hit probability against the "FOA soldier" is six times smaller than against the second figure from the left.
    5:33: Basic clothing.
Field Jacket 90 is made of a pattern printed water resistant cloth of equal parts cotton and polyester. The jacket is raglan cut and partly lined. The width of the waist and lower edge is adjusted with a drawcord and the width of the sleeves with buttons (knäppslejf, härligt ord). The elbows are reinforced. The jacket is closed with a two-way zipper with buttoned flap. It has four pockets with zippers and is made in length/weight sizes. In the right breast pocket is a holder for an autoinjector. The jacket is worn all year. Remember to try it so that you can wear extra layers underneath without it becoming cumbersome.
Field Trouser 90 has side pockets with flaps and leg pockets with bellows and zippers. The legs are pre-curved so as to not be tight over the knees. The legs are finished with a gusset with a zipper and adjustable button closure at the end. The legs are reinforced on the inside at the bottom and on the knees.
The Field Cap is made of cotton and designed so it can be worn underneath the helmet.
Field Shirt 90 is made of 75% synthetic fiber and 25% cotton and is therefore moisture wicking with a "dry" inside. It is also flame retardant. The turtleneck may be opened for ventilation. The shirt comes in six sizes and is washed in water up to 60C.
Short Underwear is made of equal parts cotton and polyester. They have a H-front and comes with or without legs. They come in five sizes and is washed in water up to 90C.
Knee Socks are steel gray and of 75% wool. They come in five sizes with size markings in the shape of color markings on the cuff. The socks may be washed in water at up to 35C. The felted sole may feel matted after washing but softens quickly.
    6:08 Your Field Equipment
    The field equipment consists of:
    1. Field uniform
    2. Combat equipment
    3. Combat pack
    4. Mess kit and
    5. Winter equipment
    Field uniform 90, 90 P or 90 H
    Field cap/fur cap,
    field jacket,
    field trousers,
    shoes and
    reflective tag.
In the pockets of the field jacket:
    Ear plugs,
skin balm (translators note: the försvarets hudsalva is an iconic product in Sweden),
    compass (some personell),
    gloves and
    autoinjector in freezing temperature
    (right breast pocket).
In the leg pockets of the field trousers:
    Maps (some personell),
    writing materials and
    first aid kit (right pocket).
    In the belt:
    Knife (some personell).

Sorry pet peeve since I used to go there so often and being from there. Love the vids tho keep up the awesome work bro!

    Great video mate.
I'd love to see you do a video on the JGSDF's camos from the
Type 1 (sometimes called airborne or Northern camo) to the current Type 2 (Japanese
flectarn). I have a set of the type 2 I picked up when I was living in Japan
and was interested in finding out how much the German pattern influenced its design.
However, getting info on anything to do with the JSDF in
English is a bit patchy at best and not often well sourced.

There was actually another version of the M90 with a very different cut and fit that used the same pattern: The C-stridsdräkt, or "Chemical combat uniform". It was supposed to be used if someone dropped nasty nerve gas or anything such on us and was basically a hooded one-piece uniform with the M90 pattern that had a layer of activated carbon between the outer and inner fabric. I don't know if it was a standard issue or if we were part of an experiment, we got it in 1991 as a "reward" after putting out a fire in an ammo and material warehouse at a training field before we were issued the real M90 later on.
It made quite a lot of noise, and was very warm. Nice in the winter but not so much during summer time. Mine always smelled really strong of the tear gas we used when fitting the gas masks between exercises, I did my service in a CBRN unit in the Swedish air force.

The m90 is a great pattern. It is distinctly Swedish: over-engineered and highly functional without being flashy.
I really hope they keep it, because if something isn't broken, you should 't try to fix it.
Most camo patterns seem to be chosen because they look cool, but they are often are too intricate so the pattern blends together to a solid color at distance. Breaking up a silhouette is way more effective than trying to accurately mimic a natural texture. M90 does this perfectly, while still blending well with the swedish natural color palette.

I think this is a myth. I think it was a matter of different batches and manufacturers from the beginning.
Some of the earliest versions from the late 80's and early 90's had the best and most effective colours, but I doubt there was ever any intentional variation. Some later versions were very strange with bright neon and "poison" green shades. These work very well in bright green summer decidous forest or tropical jungle though.
