You won't have a cure for Cancer because cancer is a catch all phrase for like 10,000 different diseases. The pathogenesis of breast cancer for example is *Completely* different from prostate cancer. You have to develop a cure for each of them individually

A macro analogy would be the Taliban and ISIS (as a hypercancer) on "Civilization" aka the organism. This internal schism between anti-Civilzation sects allows defeat by co-operating nation states.

@@Mm-sp8gq I'm glad you liked the video, I also enjoy them. However, my comment was a response to the initial post mentioning the use of these videos for "explaining complex subjects". These videos are a nice layman description of complex concepts but they generally come very short on the actual science; which is understandable given the framework. For example, you mentioned having learned how cancer works but in reality you only learned about cell mutation and a theoretical explanation to large mammal cancer suppression. In reality, cancer formation is much more complex than just cell mutation and the theory is one of many that are still being studied and debated.
I’m just working with leukemic cancer stem cells and the more I work in cancer biology the more I get excited about the development of cancer immunotherapies. Normally, T cells which are a part of our immune system kill cells which acquire dangerous mutations. However, cancer cells have mechanisms to escape the immune system. In certain immunotherapies, T cells are engineered in the laboratory to be able to recognise cancer cells again (I made a video about this a while ago!). First clinical trials in AML are very promising, I can't wait to see how immunotherapy progresses!
My brother had leukemia. Eight years have passed since he was cured,and the doctors say that enough time has passed for the risk of the cancer returning to be the same as in a healthy person. He was very lucky and didn't need a bone marrow transplant,he was treated with chemotherapy and got healthy. The last time he took the chemotherapy his hair was falling off,we thought he won't make it,but here he is still with us. Cancer is a bitch and I can't imagine how sad it must be for your relative/loved one to get taken by it. Hopefully that cure you mentioned can help cure leukemia! One cancer at a time and we might put a stop to it once and for all!
Being a molecular biologist that used to do oncology research I found this video quite informative. Never had even heard of "hypertumors" but they do make some sense - from an evolutionary perspective, parasites do have a niche and like most any lifeform subject to natural selection, they fill it. Bacterophages, for example, are the most common viruses on Earth, and they parasitize bacteria exclusvely. Cancer evolving its own parasite would be predicted by this model of evolution, but it would take a long time - otherwise we'd see hypertumors in ALL organisms, not just the macrofauna. I've also seen the hypothesis that big animals just have so many cells that cancerous tumors can't make much of a dent in organ and tissue function before they literally evolve themselves to death and die out - not from hypertumors but genetic instability. A current model is that cancerous tumors are composed of a lot of dead cells and "stem cells" at the center that make all the new cancer cells. These stem cells may be in a race - metastasize or self-destruct after a certain number of divisions. Perhaps, in large animals, they self-destruct before they can seriously affect the animal's organ and tissue function.
I do believe that the answer to this paradox is the idea of hyper tumors, cancer fighting itself which results in no severe tumors growing. I think this is a case in human bodies as well, but since our bodies are much smaller than an elephant's or a whale's, we can't survive long enough for the hyper tumors to kick in. And this does bring a pretty interesting concept of how to treat cancer. Scientists can try making mini-cancer cells and target them at already established tumors so the dangers die down. It may be pretty dangerous by creating a second tumor, but if it can work for other mammals it can work out for us too.
Honestly, this theory makes a lot of sense. There's more nutrients to go around so it's less of a problem. Like a group of thieves in a small town vs a big city. Except in this case, the thieves keep adding new members who keep betraying each other.

I find it quite intriguing. My mother was diagnosed with leumyoSarcoma. The cancer tumor within the walls of her abdomen? Had another tumour within it. So it's a tumour within a tumour eating one another. I pray to God she survives. She's been through surgery 2 times. Chemotherapy seems to have keep the tumour at bay and shrunk it.
Basically, since they're big animals, their tumors can get so big, they develop a tumor (called a hyper tumor) themselves that kills the original tumor

It's kind of like the scenario from Alien, if they 'don't feel too good', it means a bunch of foreign parasites (like a virus) is about to burst out of it, killing it anyway in the process. I find it quite intriguing. My mother was diagnosed with leumyoSarcoma. The cancer tumor within the walls of her abdomen? Had another tumour within it. So it's a tumour within a tumour eating one another.
I pray to God she survives. She's been through surgery 2 times. Chemotherapy seems to have keep the tumour at bay and shrunk it.

It's kind of like the scenario from Alien, if they 'don't feel too good', it means a bunch of foreign parasites (like a virus) is about to burst out of it, killing it anyway in the process.
That's for viruses, at least. In the case of cancer, it's more like they're about to turn into a zombie, and cause an outbreak that will spread uncontrollably.
