Hi, everybody! If you're wondering how my table has stood up over time, I created a video about it. You can find it here: th-cam.com/video/gocox56crSM/w-d-xo.html I'm sorry that the volume of the video isn't so great, but I'm constantly trying to improve my video editing, so future videos are better, I promise! Also, I'm working on creating another video to show you how to touch up scratches and ding marks, so please subscribe and stayed tuned for that future video. Thank you so much for watching! I hope you've found this video to be helpful to you! :)
1thornley I have not found it to be streaky. Everything I have ever chalk painted I always had to give several coats. I always buy good paint too. I have painted all my life and have found thru the years the saying...You get what you pay for hold true to this type of painting.
This was exactly what I was looking for. Just bought a cabin in the mountains that came with a round oak dining table that I’d like to paint and antique. It’s a true log cabin so hand hewn wood grain is everywhere and thus an oak grain on the table clashed. I’ll be trying this technique. Thank you!
Thankyou so much for the video. I’ve just bought a round vintage wooden table and was hoping to weather it. Seems relatively easy & I do love a diy project. ❤️
I liked your video. Great choice of colors. I've done a lot of furniture refinishing. Back in the 80's I would strip the furniture & then re-stain and take care of imperfections. I still think it's wise to sand, clean, fill in areas that need filling, etc. I believe you will get a more long lasting professional look for the item...especially if its solid wood.
You've given the table a whole new look/life! Did you know that you can "wet sand" ASCP (with just a damp rag) BEFORE you wax, and thereby save a step? Then you have no sanding dust to clean up, or need to re-wax the distressed edges. Happy painting!
Pam, thank you very much for the compliment and also for that great tip! Makes a lot of sense. I will DEFINITELY give that technique a try...the more time saved the better! THANKS. :)
The wax is what "seals" the chalk paint. Otherwise, due to its chalky texture, it will flake off over time. After you apply the wax, it "cures" or hardens, forming a protective layer over the chalk paint.
I used one quart for the uppers (I had enough paint left to do the top of my dining room table) and a half a quart for the lowers (I had enough paint left to refinish an old Ikea dresser.) Hope that helps!
I`m going to buy some chalk paint tomorrow and I have a kitchen table, antique dresser/armoire and my kitchen cabinets to have fun with...oh and maybe two shelving units as well... your video makes it look so easy working with chalk paint. I thought let`s do this...Might as well go big or go home! lol Thanks for the inspiration. Awesome job!! :)
this is great. After watching I bought some pale grey paint, some wintage duck egg chalk paint and just finished a frame for a large mirror. It looks great
Hi. Thank you for this great video. I was about to get rid of or old outdoor table but now I have decided to try and paint and distress I as a holiday project with my 13 year old daughter! Not sure if I'll be able to find the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in New Zealand but if not, I'll go for something similar ... Will let you know how it turns out! Kind regards from Auckland NZ
Oh, that's so wonderful to hear. Thank you for letting me know! I hope you and your daughter have an excellent time together restoring your outdoor table. :) If you can't find AS, you may be able to find Jolie paint, a newer product brand that I believe is an Australian-based company. It's not technically "chalk paint" but it works the same way and I've heard wonderful things. I look forward to hearing how your project turns out. Cheers!
Im so excited after, watching ur video. I trying to research how chalk paint done before I make the attempt on my TV cabinet.yours is the one I like the best,so i will follow ur tips, and paint brand😃
So Awesome! I am going to be painting our dining table white soon too! It is a table I got from Pottery Barn a few years ago. It has some sort of wood stain-looking veneer on top, that is peeling/scratched off on some areas. Under that, it looks like a pine color, but not smooth. Im not sure what this table is made out of? But should I try to get all of that veneer off before painting it? Or just go right over it? Also, does putting the wax on make it sticky, so that lint and cat hairs will constantly stick to the table? Any advice would be so appreciated :)
I just bought an end table at Pier 1 and I don’t like the color. It’s a yellowish creme and I need a beige color. Would like to distress it a bit but my question is would I need to put a dark color under the beige color to get the distressed look? Or would the yellowish color look okay coming out as the antiqued color? Seems the color coming through should be darker like yours and others I’ve seen. Thanks so much, loved your video.
Nikki, thank you so much for your sweet compliment! It still looks good today, and has held up well to wear and tear. Still one of my favorite DIY projects of all time! ☺️ Thank you for watching! 🙏🏼
Awesome! Thank you, Kim. :) Would love to know how your end tables turn out. Btw - My Mom and I chalk painted a dresser of hers over Thanksgiving weekend. It turned out great, and we finished painting it in less than two hours!
L💖VED your video! So wonderfully easy to follow, thus very Inspirational! Just discovered CHALK paint and am excited to paint my all wood dining table! Being a neophyte, could you talk about WHICH kind of BRUSHES to use w CHALK paint?? 🙏🏼Merci beaucoup! Cecilia
Its not, with wax you have to reapply it from time to time ir you will end up with a more destroyed table from what u started with, use a polycrilic, like 5-7 coats and youll be safe.
She Cleaves to Christ: I love this paint, too! It's so easy to work with. I believe you have to wait 24 hours for the wax to cure, but I'd actually wait longer, maybe 48 hours. The wax will continue to cure over the course of about a week. Hope that helps!😊
Theresa, thank you for the compliment! Yes, I think the dark wax gives such a cool finish, especially if you want a highly textured piece or a more vintage or rustic look.
Oh, I am sooooo glad to hear that, Marlene! ☺️ It is such a worthwhile project. I recently recorded an update, and the table still looks very good after a year and a half. Good luck!
Hi Justina! I'm a new subscriber, came across your video while looking for tutorials on redoing dining tables in a farmhouse style. I didn't think I'd be able to do it but you make it look so easy now I'm excited to try it! My table is very similar to yours and I'm going with a dark wood look so hopefully it turns out just as nice as yours did! Love your videos!! Thank you for the confidence and inspiration!
Hello, Michelle! Wow, thank you so much for sharing that with me. I’m so glad that this video helpful to you. Did you start your project yet? If so, how did it turn out??? ☺️👩🏻🎨 Also, thank you so, so much for subscribing to my channel. I’m so glad you’re here! Ps. Sorry I am so late in responding...I just saw your sweet message now. Two weeks ago my baby and I were both sick! (All better now, though!) TYSM for watching, Michelle!
Just found this video. I was looking for a small writing desk as a decorative piece in my renovated living room. Someone gave an old to me that was old but in good condition. At some point, the top was painted dark brown and the legs were left a dark stain. This may be the perfect solution to bring this back to life without have to strip it first.
Thank you so much! This is, perhaps, my favorite chalk paint project...either this or the bookshelf I just did. Thank you for watching and for your sweet comments, Norine! 💕💕💕
Hi there, your video is very helpful. If I paint a table that will get lots of use and I want to polyurethane the surface, do I still use the wax? Also, I have purchased water transfer decals for a table, any suggestions for when to apply it?
Hi, Cindy! Glad you liked the video. 😁 I wouldn't use both the wax and the polyurethane. What I would do in your situation is to paint the surface using the chalk paint and then apply the decal and then apply the polyurethane. However, you might want to do a test first to make sure that the polyurethane doesn't make the decal bleed. Hope that helps!
Good Afternoon Ma'am ! I dont know how I ended up here. I was catching up on hackers toys (check out wifi signal jammers....its cool) then possums, (amazing animals) and then here ! I love doing projects for my wife, and what a great video. I cant stand dyi vids as they give me anxiety issues by the way they give their presentation. This was very nerve calming and simple. Thank you again ma'am :) PS: Never could discredit my wife in any way. She is absolutely stunning. Just would like to say, your husband is a very lucky man and you guys have a beautiful home ! Thanks again for your video !
Awesome, great painter. I will try it in my home. By the way what kind of genre music you added in the website of purple planet, coz i saw a lot of genres out there, i can't to figure out, i think it's some sort of New age genre. Thank you for sharing your talent for us.
Hello...came across your videos and I must say Bravo! I have a similar dining table that is finished with a gloss. Would you recommend I sand it down before I begin to paint? Also after you distressed your table did you wax it again? My apologies for the questions. Im soo tempted to do my table but so scared at the same time. Thank you for sharing your videos and keep them coming :)
Hi, Jisenia , and thanks for your comment! 😃 yes, I lightly waxed over the distressed parts. So far, my table is holding up pretty well! I am pleased with the results. For your table, I think it would depend on how glossy the finish is. According to Annie Sloan, you are supposed to be able to apply the chalk paint over pretty much any surface. I think the exception is mahogany. Maybe try doing a test area to see if the paint is going to adhere to the gloss? However, I would suggest that if it is a very thick layer of very glossy finish, you may want to be on the safe side and sand it down first. Hope that helps.😁
Justina...Liz from 'Traditions By The Seasons" recommended I visit your channel and I am so glad she did. I loved this video with you chalk painting your table. I am looking forward to learning all about chalk painting. Thank you.
Hi, Ann! ❤️🤗WELCOME!🤗❤️ Thank you very much for being here and for saying hello! 🙏🏼 I‘m excited to hear that you’re interested in chalk paint. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. I love the stuff! 😍 Lol! Hope you have a lovely night, Ann! ❤️
Thank you so much for subscribing, Lucia! As for your table, as long as there is no "rush" to refinish your table, just think about it for a while and maybe also look into other refurbishing methods. For ex., I'd love to try gel stain one day. :)
Thank you, Oscar! I've found that it doesn't really matter. What I did was wax it first, then I distressed it, then I went back over the distressed areas with the wax. I believe you can wait to wax the whole thing at once after it's been distressed. Hope that answers your question! :)
Lorraine Quinn Hi, Lorraine! I clean my table off with a vinegar/water spray and cloth and it comes clean. However, of you have small kids or eat at your table all the time, I would consider doing the top in a polyurethane finish. Hope that helps!
I have a table just like this and we have stained the top and i want my chairs and bottom like this. My chairs and table and bottom is already white how do I to get the destresed look? I bought the linin . paint and wax but can take it back. Do I have to stain first or paint a dark color the paint
I just finished my first chalk paint project, a corner desk. Being so excited to get thru the painting part of it, rushed thru and neglected to do a second coat of paint on the top. My question is can I apply another coat of paint over the top of the wax?
Michelle Breisacher Congratulations on finishing your first chalk paint project! Yes, I believe you can add a coat right over the wax....you'll just need to wax it again. 😃
Hi, Hanna! Yes, I waxed the base and it's holding up nicely! It will absolutely protect the paint from water. I clean the top of the table with a semi wet, soapy sponge. Works well!
Hi, Ruth! I’ve found that it is... I’m actually editing a video now that will show you the wear and tear over the course of a year plus...look for it this weekend! You’ll also see the difference between the wax finish on the table and the polyurethane on the kitchen cabinets after a year of use.
Hi Justina. Very randomly ended up here at Ur channel. Glad I found it. I'm shifting house and with budget constraint I will have to take my old dining table with me, but the color is similar to Urs - brown polished. And I have plans to make new place grey white tone. So was lookin at ideas. As I'm little tensed to do this project just wanted to know few things. U didn't distress the wood bfre first coat of chalk paint. U used two coats of chalk paint up and down. To apply wax - do u have to wait for last layer of chalk paint to dry or should paint b wet? Does the wax erode with our daily wiping with water? If colored runners or newspapers are spread, does it stain table? Is the wax long lasting? Sorry, I know I'm bothering. But just wanted cleared.
Hi, Shabz! Thanks for the questions, and no, you aren't bothering me at all! :) So to answer your questions in order, 1. I did NOT distress/sand the wood before the first coat of chalk paint, 2. I used 2 coats of the Louis Blue chalk paint and 3 coats of the Pure White chalk paint, 3. Yes, you must wait until the last coat dries before applying the wax. It only takes about 10-15 minutes for each coat of chalk paint to dry. 4. If I were doing this particular project again, I would have coated the white (top) of the table in polyurethane instead of wax. TBH, I don't really like the wax table top. It's a weird feel to me, especially after wiping it down with a wet sponge every few days. 5. I don't know about the newspaper, but my runner is fine on the table. I would guess that newspaper might stain the table top...again, I would definitely consider going with polyurethane on the table top if you are going to use the table every single day 6. Yes, the wax seems to be long-lasting. It's great on the table legs and sides. I hope that helps!!! :)
I should add, in regards to #1, the back of Annie Sloan's chalk paint can says that you have to sand down mahogany wood finishes...so keep that in mind. :)
Hi, everybody! If you're wondering how my table has stood up over time, I created a video about it. Hi does chalk paint ever finish looking completely smooth or is it always streaky looking? Thanks
1thornley I have not found it to be streaky. Everything I have ever chalk painted I always had to give several coats. I always buy good paint too. I have painted all my life and have found thru the years the saying...You get what you pay for hold true to this type of painting.
The blue and white is so fresh looking, I love it.

I'm a total novice to this refinishing stuff, so your video was very well explained, clear, easy to follow. Well spoken, too.
Getting ready to do a makeover of some old furniture in the house. Thanks for the instruction!

Great tutorial for chalk paint. Love your table, very nice!
Judy Sylvest thank you!!! 💗
I like how the two tone table came out, nice, I would paint the chairs the same pale blue you used for the bottom of the table
Really, really love the colors used...completely changes the the feel of the space. Well done😊
Thanks so much!!!

Amazing finish. I was surprised that you did not have to sand before painting! Is this ok with any table?
So beautiful, love it!
Thank you, Deborah!!!
Absolutely beautiful! Thanks for the tutorial
Absolutely LOVED this video! Do you have a video for your bench?
Thank you very much! Unfortunately I do not have a video for the bench, but it has been a welcome addition for our small eating space.
Besides the wax what else could I use on my dinning room table . I will be using this table all the time. Thank y in advance.😊
What an awesome tranformation your table came out nice ty for the video...
Thank you, Chris!!! :)
Excellent video. Great quality from tutorial to editing.
Just wondering if the clear wax is enough to protect dining table top?
Thank you
me too?!?!
Its not, with wax you have to reapply it from time to time ir you will end up with a more destroyed table from what u started with, use a polycrilic, like 5-7 coats and youll be safe.
Amazing final product!! Thanks
Real good clear video. Very helpful thank you!
Franzella, hi! Oh, I’m so glad to hear that! Thanks for watching and for letting me know! 🤗🤗🤗
How long should the table dry for? before I move it into my kitchen and ready to eat on and put grocery bags on, ect. Thank you : ) Love this paint

I'm so confused about the wax... Do you reapply every so often? Can you use regular multi purpose cleaner on it?
how long will it last without scraping off or chipping...with children around lol....also same question with the cabinets
I like it looks amazing n I love the blue color
Thank you, Adriana! ❤️I just love blue and white. This particular blue is very pretty, indeed!
So helpful and our tables are nearly identical. Thank you!!
Beautiful❤
This is a great DIY thank you! Do you recommend the dark wax on certain pieces?
Theresa, thank you for the compliment! Yes, I think the dark wax gives such a cool finish, especially if you want a highly textured piece or a more vintage or rustic look.
I loved it where can I purchase the paint and wax?
How long does it need to dry between coats and the wax? Does the wax ever need to be reapplied?
Excellent video. Now I'm not so afraid to do it myself! Thanks
Oh, I am sooooo glad to hear that, Marlene! ☺️ It is such a worthwhile project. I recently recorded an update, and the table still looks very good after a year and a half.

Hi I want to revamp my dining table will the wax you used waterproof it? So I can clean it in general everyday use or for accidental spills!
Lorraine Quinn Hi, Lorraine! I clean my table off with a vinegar/water spray and cloth and it comes clean. However, of you have small kids or eat at your table all the time, I would consider doing the top in a polyurethane finish. Hope that helps!
MissJustinaMarie Thank you I will keep it in mind!!
Thanks alot this has been really helpful x
Eloise, thank you so much for watching! I’m glad to hear that you found it helpful. 🤗
I have a table just like this and we have stained the top and i want my chairs and bottom like this. My chairs and table and bottom is already white how do I to get the destresed look? I bought the linin . paint and wax but can take it back. Do I have to stain first or paint a dark color the paint
What brushes do you use for the chalk paint
I just finished my first chalk paint project, a corner desk. Being so excited to get thru the painting part of it, rushed thru and neglected to do a second coat of paint on the top. My question is can I apply another coat of paint over the top of the wax?
Michelle Breisacher Congratulations on finishing your first chalk paint project! Yes, I believe you can add a coat right over the wax....you'll just need to wax it again. 😃
Did you wax the legs to? Is there a special cleaner you have to use on the wax? Will that protect the paint against water?
Hi, Hanna! Yes, I waxed the base and it's holding up nicely! It will absolutely protect the paint from water. I clean the top of the table with a semi wet, soapy sponge. Works well!
I chalk paint with Annie Sloan. I've done dressers and buffets...never a table. How does it hold up on the top being used all the time?
Wax really won't hold up well at all on a dining table, was hoping to see how a poly would be applied for a top coat.
Thanks, very helpful
enjoyed video...very professional...and not too many "ums"...thank you
C Charm she said “uh” like 25 times, what are you talking about?...
So the wax is enough to protect the table from everyday use? Liquid spills, eating, things dragging, etc?
MissJustinaMarie thank you so much. Helped a lot
