Hi, everybody! If you're wondering how my table has stood up over time, I created a video about it. You can find it here: th-cam.com/video/gocox56crSM/w-d-xo.html I'm sorry that the volume of the video isn't so great, but I'm constantly trying to improve my video editing, so future videos are better, I promise! Also, I'm working on creating another video to show you how to touch up scratches and ding marks, so please subscribe and stayed tuned for that future video. Thank you so much for watching! I hope you've found this video to be helpful to you! :)
1thornley I have not found it to be streaky. Everything I have ever chalk painted I always had to give several coats. I always buy good paint too. I have painted all my life and have found thru the years the saying...You get what you pay for hold true to this type of painting.
This was exactly what I was looking for. Just bought a cabin in the mountains that came with a round oak dining table that I’d like to paint and antique. It’s a true log cabin so hand hewn wood grain is everywhere and thus an oak grain on the table clashed. I’ll be trying this technique. Thank you!
this is great. After watching I bought some pale grey paint, some wintage duck egg chalk paint and just finished a frame for a large mirror. It looks great
I liked your video. Great choice of colors. I've done a lot of furniture refinishing. Back in the 80's I would strip the furniture & then re-stain and take care of imperfections. I still think it's wise to sand, clean, fill in areas that need filling, etc. I believe you will get a more long lasting professional look for the item...especially if its solid wood.
You've given the table a whole new look/life! Did you know that you can "wet sand" ASCP (with just a damp rag) BEFORE you wax, and thereby save a step? Then you have no sanding dust to clean up, or need to re-wax the distressed edges. Happy painting!
Pam, thank you very much for the compliment and also for that great tip! Makes a lot of sense. I will DEFINITELY give that technique a try...the more time saved the better! THANKS. :)
The wax is what "seals" the chalk paint. Otherwise, due to its chalky texture, it will flake off over time. After you apply the wax, it "cures" or hardens, forming a protective layer over the chalk paint.
I used one quart for the uppers (I had enough paint left to do the top of my dining room table) and a half a quart for the lowers (I had enough paint left to refinish an old Ikea dresser.) Hope that helps!
I`m going to buy some chalk paint tomorrow and I have a kitchen table, antique dresser/armoire and my kitchen cabinets to have fun with...oh and maybe two shelving units as well... your video makes it look so easy working with chalk paint. I thought let`s do this...Might as well go big or go home! lol Thanks for the inspiration. Awesome job!! :)
Thankyou so much for the video. I’ve just bought a round vintage wooden table and was hoping to weather it. Seems relatively easy & I do love a diy project. ❤️
Just found this video. I was looking for a small writing desk as a decorative piece in my renovated living room. Someone gave an old to me that was old but in good condition. At some point, the top was painted dark brown and the legs were left a dark stain. This may be the perfect solution to bring this back to life without have to strip it first.
Hi. Thank you for this great video. I was about to get rid of or old outdoor table but now I have decided to try and paint and distress I as a holiday project with my 13 year old daughter! Not sure if I'll be able to find the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in New Zealand but if not, I'll go for something similar ... Will let you know how it turns out! Kind regards from Auckland NZ
Oh, that's so wonderful to hear. Thank you for letting me know! I hope you and your daughter have an excellent time together restoring your outdoor table. :) If you can't find AS, you may be able to find Jolie paint, a newer product brand that I believe is an Australian-based company. It's not technically "chalk paint" but it works the same way and I've heard wonderful things. I look forward to hearing how your project turns out. Cheers!
Im so excited after, watching ur video. I trying to research how chalk paint done before I make the attempt on my TV cabinet.yours is the one I like the best,so i will follow ur tips, and paint brand😃
I have a table just like this and we have stained the top and i want my chairs and bottom like this. My chairs and table and bottom is already white how do I to get the destresed look? I bought the linin . paint and wax but can take it back. Do I have to stain first or paint a dark color the paint
I just bought an end table at Pier 1 and I don’t like the color. It’s a yellowish creme and I need a beige color. Would like to distress it a bit but my question is would I need to put a dark color under the beige color to get the distressed look? Or would the yellowish color look okay coming out as the antiqued color? Seems the color coming through should be darker like yours and others I’ve seen. Thanks so much, loved your video.
Hi there, your video is very helpful. If I paint a table that will get lots of use and I want to polyurethane the surface, do I still use the wax? Also, I have purchased water transfer decals for a table, any suggestions for when to apply it?
Hi, Cindy! Glad you liked the video. 😁 I wouldn't use both the wax and the polyurethane. What I would do in your situation is to paint the surface using the chalk paint and then apply the decal and then apply the polyurethane. However, you might want to do a test first to make sure that the polyurethane doesn't make the decal bleed. Hope that helps!

Awesome! Thank you, Kim. :) Would love to know how your end tables turn out. Btw - My Mom and I chalk painted a dresser of hers over Thanksgiving weekend. It turned out great, and we finished painting it in less than two hours!
She Cleaves to Christ: I love this paint, too! It's so easy to work with. I believe you have to wait 24 hours for the wax to cure, but I'd actually wait longer, maybe 48 hours. The wax will continue to cure over the course of about a week. Hope that helps!😊
Lorraine Quinn Hi, Lorraine! I clean my table off with a vinegar/water spray and cloth and it comes clean. However, of you have small kids or eat at your table all the time, I would consider doing the top in a polyurethane finish. Hope that helps!
Oh, I am sooooo glad to hear that, Marlene! ☺️ It is such a worthwhile project. I recently recorded an update, and the table still looks very good after a year and a half. Good luck!

Hi, Gary! What a good idea to paint your old radiators. I didn't know the answer, so I looked it up on Annie Sloan's website. It specifically says that YES, you can paint radiators! Here is the exact wording followed by a link to the source: Using Chalk Paint® on Fireplaces, Mantelpieces and Radiators Chalk Paint® adheres very well to marble, stone, wood and brick fireplaces with no undercoat required. It can also be used on radiators! Make sure the radiator or fireplace is cold before you start painting in order to prevent the paint from cracking. So Awesome! I am going to be painting our dining table white soon too! It is a table I got from Pottery Barn a few years ago. It has some sort of wood stain-looking veneer on top, that is peeling/scratched off on some areas. Under that, it looks like a pine color, but not smooth. Im not sure what this table is made out of? But should I try to get all of that veneer off before painting it? Or just go right over it? Also, does putting the wax on make it sticky, so that lint and cat hairs will constantly stick to the table? Any advice would be so appreciated :)
Theresa, thank you for the compliment! Yes, I think the dark wax gives such a cool finish, especially if you want a highly textured piece or a more vintage or rustic look.
Hi, Hanna! Yes, I waxed the base and it's holding up nicely! It will absolutely protect the paint from water. I clean the top of the table with a semi wet, soapy sponge. Works well!
Hi, Sue! Absolutely! One of my very first TH-cam videos was painting my kitchen cabinets with chalk paint. They are covered with a plastic veneer and the chalk paint adhered wonderfully. The only surface to date that I’ve had trouble with are surfaces with a cherry finish. Thank you for watching! Hope you have a good rest of the week.😁
Its not, with wax you have to reapply it from time to time ir you will end up with a more destroyed table from what u started with, use a polycrilic, like 5-7 coats and youll be safe.
CSvids well, you’d need to at least use a primer with regular paint, you might also need to sand. Chalk paint adheres to virtually any surface with no priming or prepping (other than making sure it’s clean.) so that’s a big bonus when using chalk paint. It cuts down the prep time and labor involved. I don’t know the “science” behind it, but it’s pretty remarkable, IMO. You can paint fabric, leather, metal, etc. A very interesting and incredible product!
I just finished my first chalk paint project, a corner desk. Being so excited to get thru the painting part of it, rushed thru and neglected to do a second coat of paint on the top. My question is can I apply another coat of paint over the top of the wax?
Michelle Breisacher Congratulations on finishing your first chalk paint project! Yes, I believe you can add a coat right over the wax....you'll just need to wax it again. 😃
I bought white table and would like to "distress" it, would I need to repaint it with chalk paint or is there a way to do it because it is already white?
Hi, Cherie! Without seeing the table, it’s hard to say. However, if it’s painted white, it sounds like you can distress it and then just wax or polycrylic over it. If there is a white finish like vinyl or something over it, then I would roughly paint the areas you want to distress with a darker color and then paint it white... then distress it so that that dark color comes through and then put sealer on it. I hope what I wrote makes sense! 🤭🤗 Thank you so much for watching and good luck with your project!
Thank you so much! This is, perhaps, my favorite chalk paint project...either this or the bookshelf I just did. Thank you for watching and for your sweet comments, Norine! 💕💕💕
Justina...Liz from 'Traditions By The Seasons" recommended I visit your channel and I am so glad she did. I loved this video with you chalk painting your table. I am looking forward to learning all about chalk painting. Thank you.
Hi, Ann! ❤️🤗WELCOME!🤗❤️ Thank you very much for being here and for saying hello! 🙏🏼 I‘m excited to hear that you’re interested in chalk paint. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. I love the stuff! 😍 Lol! Hope you have a lovely night, Ann! ❤️
Hi Justina! I'm a new subscriber, came across your video while looking for tutorials on redoing dining tables in a farmhouse style. I didn't think I'd be able to do it but you make it look so easy now I'm excited to try it! My table is very similar to yours and I'm going with a dark wood look so hopefully it turns out just as nice as yours did! Love your videos!! Thank you for the confidence and inspiration!
Hello, Michelle! Wow, thank you so much for sharing that with me. I’m so glad that this video helpful to you. Did you start your project yet? If so, how did it turn out??? ☺️👩🏻🎨 Also, thank you so, so much for subscribing to my channel. I’m so glad you’re here! Ps. Sorry I am so late in responding...I just saw your sweet message now. Two weeks ago my baby and I were both sick! (All better now, though!) TYSM for watching, Michelle!
Hi, Michael! Are you wondering if you should distress or not? Absolutely, you can distress after you wax. I would just say to remember to "re-wax" the areas you distress. Good luck!
Nikki, thank you so much for your sweet compliment! It still looks good today, and has held up well to wear and tear. Still one of my favorite DIY projects of all time! ☺️ Thank you for watching! 🙏🏼
That’s so awesome! 🙌🏼 I hope my video was helpful. Are you going to try chalk paint? If you do, the one thing I would suggest now that I’ve lived with my chalk-painted table for about 2 1/2 years, is to consider sealing the top of the table with a matte or satin polycrylic. I think it will be more durable than the wax. Good luck with your project, I hope it turns out great!😁😁😁
@@MissJustinaMarie New to your channel and have found some great tips on refinishing my dining room table. This is exactly what I was wondering about sealing as I’ve read that the wax can feel tacky and/or wear off quickly on a table due to frequent use and cleaning.. Is there a particular product you’d recommend now to seal? Thanks!
Hi, Angie! So the brush I have was a bit of a splurge. It's a brush for chalk paint and it was about $50 (I know, that's a lot for a brush.) At first, I wasn't too keen on it because it shed, but since using it for a whole bunch of chalk paint projects, I'm very, very happy with it. It works great, the brush lines are fine, and it holds the paint and clean off very well. The brush I have is not from Annie Sloan but it is very similar to her "pure bristle brushes." Here is a link to her brushes if you are interested! www.anniesloan.com/annie-sloan-products/annie-sloan-brushes.html
Hi, Ruth! I’ve found that it is... I’m actually editing a video now that will show you the wear and tear over the course of a year plus...look for it this weekend! You’ll also see the difference between the wax finish on the table and the polyurethane on the kitchen cabinets after a year of use.
Hi, Mark! Not at all, it adheres wonderfully and has been on my kitchen cabinets for over two years now. Chalk paint is an amazing product if you want to paint over pretty much any surface without sanding or priming. I don’t know the science behind it, but chalk paint sticks to so many different kinds of surfaces including the vinyl that was on top of my kitchen cabinets, as well as glass, metal, plastic, and more! I promise I’m not sponsored by any chalk paint companies, 😉 I really think it’s a great product. You just have to make sure to seal your project after you’re finished...either use wax or some sort sort of varnish. 😃
MissJustinaMarie thanks for the reply. I am a house painting contractor for the last 30 yrs. Normal architectural paint does not adhere to surfaces like varnish. I am going to give the chalk paint a try with some furniture I have. You produce a very nice video.
Thank you so much, Mark! I sure do hope that you enjoy using the chalk paint. With your experience as a professional painter, I’m really curious to know what you think of it! I know for sure that you can paint over varnished furniture. In fact, I’m thinking of re-painting my kitchen cabinets and I’ll be able to paint right over the polyurethane finish. The only kind of wood surface I had trouble painting over without priming was mahogany stain. For some reason, the tannins pull through and streak the paint. If you have a moment, you might want to check out Annie Sloan’s website. There is a lot of information on there about how chalk paint works. Also, i recently re-did a bookshelf using Rustoleum Chalk Paint (it’s half the price compared to Annie Sloan) and that product worked rather well, too, (though Annie Sloan is the best on the market, IMO.) Anyways, thanks so much for watching, I really appreciate your kind feedback, and I hope you have a great weekend, Mark!
Hi, Judy! If using Annie Sloan chalk paint, she recommends waiting 24 hours between painting and waxing. If you notice in the video, I have a different outfit on when I waxed, lol, so I waited overnight. Worked just fine for me!

Looks beautiful! So no need to strip the old stain?
I loved it where can I purchase the paint and wax?
How long does it need to dry between coats and the wax? Does the wax ever need to be reapplied?
I think I can do this. What was the wax that you used at the end?
Hi, Connie! I used Annie Sloan wax in clear. Thank you for watching and best of luck with your project! 🤗❤️

how long will it last without scraping off or chipping...with children around lol....also same question with the cabinets

I chalk paint with Annie Sloan. I've done dressers and buffets...never a table. How does it hold up on the top being used all the time?
Wax really won't hold up well at all on a dining table, was hoping to see how a poly would be applied for a top coat.
How long should the table dry for? before I move it into my kitchen and ready to eat on and put grocery bags on, ect. Thank you : ) Love this paint

Hi, Sue!
@@MissJustinaMarie thanks so much!
Beautiful...need furniture for my new home, thanks for the info and the inspiration.
Stacy Fine you're welcome! Thank you for watching! ☺️
Excellent video. Great quality from tutorial to editing.
Just wondering if the clear wax is enough to protect dining table top?
Thank you
me too?!?!
Its not, with wax you have to reapply it from time to time ir you will end up with a more destroyed table from what u started with, use a polycrilic, like 5-7 coats and youll be safe.
Beautiful it really turned out well.
Linda, thank you! 😃
Amazing finish. I was surprised that you did not have to sand before painting! Is this ok with any table?
Looks great but what's the difference between chalk paint and regular flat paint?
Thank you so much for watching and good luck with your project!
I like it looks amazing n I love the blue color
Thank you, Adriana! ❤️I just love blue and white. This particular blue is very pretty, indeed!
AWESOME!!!!!
Another beautiful piece thank you
Thank you so much!
I‘m excited to hear that you’re interested in chalk paint. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. I love the stuff! 😍 Lol!
Hope you have a lovely night, Ann! ❤️
Love your home..what paint color is in your living room?..i just love it! Bye from Canada
Real good clear video. Very helpful thank you!
Franzella, hi! Oh, I’m so glad to hear that! Thanks for watching and for letting me know! 🤗🤗🤗
(All better now, though!)
TYSM for watching, Michelle!
So beautiful, love it!
Thank you, Deborah!!!
What kind of brush is that you're using to paint with?
can I wait between last wax finish and distressing to make my mine up
Hi, Michael! Are you wondering if you should distress or not? Absolutely, you can distress after you wax. I would just say to remember to "re-wax" the areas you distress. Good luck!
That is beautiful!!! I love love love it!!!
Nikki, thank you so much for your sweet compliment! It still looks good today, and has held up well to wear and tear. Still one of my favorite DIY projects of all time! ☺️
Thank you for watching! 🙏🏼
great video, learned alot in a quick time!!!
Thank you, Claudia!🌹
I got a table almost exactly like yours, also at Habitat for Humanity for Restore! I was looking for videos like yours, before I painted it.
Thanks!
Great job!
Thank you!!! ☺️
whats the best paint brush to use ??? I have a problem finding a good one mine always live really bad streaks
MissJustinaMarie thanks
Did you need to apply wax to the legs of the table as well?
Beautiful video!
Awww, thank you so much, Stephanie Ann! ❤️🤗❤️
beautiful work by a beautiful lady
Beautiful!!!
So the wax is enough to protect the table from everyday use? Liquid spills, eating, things dragging, etc?
Hi, Ruth! I’ve found that it is... I’m actually editing a video now that will show you the wear and tear over the course of a year plus...look for it this weekend! You’ll also see the difference between the wax finish on the table and the polyurethane on the kitchen cabinets after a year of use.
You don’t have adhesion problems going over a varnished surface without sanding?
Also, i recently re-did a bookshelf using Rustoleum Chalk Paint (it’s half the price compared to Annie Sloan) and that product worked rather well, too, (though Annie Sloan is the best on the market, IMO.)
Anyways, thanks so much for watching, I really appreciate your kind feedback, and I hope you have a great weekend, Mark!
Amazing final product!! Thanks
Beautiful
Thank you very much, Leticia! 🤗
hi I don't like distress. is it ok if I don't do that. thanks @MissJustinaMarie
OF COURSE! 😊
Great job young lady, simple n looks amazing
Thank you very much, Steve!
How many hour do you wait between the two coats of paint and how soon to wait to apply wax
Hi, Judy! If using Annie Sloan chalk paint, she recommends waiting 24 hours between painting and waxing. If you notice in the video, I have a different outfit on when I waxed, lol, so I waited overnight. Worked just fine for me!
what is the wax for? is it to protect the table?
Beautiful!
Thank you so much! 😘
