I was so happy when he joined the Ravens back in the late 90s. I always thought he was one of the best veteran additions to the team. A legend and a great guy.
He still is an analyst for the Ravens Radio network alongside Gerry Sandusky who does play by play. He will be the head coach for the XFLs Las Vegas Vipers next year.
Easily the nicest and classiest pro athlete I’ve ever met. And I’ve met a lot of them. And it was on the street. He didn’t even have to give me the time of day. But man, was he awesome in person.
I agree. Rod showed all of those defensive players how to win. They had the worst defense in the NFL before Rod Woodson arrived. When Rod Woodson arrived, everything changed. He and Shannon Sharpe changed the culture of the Ravens. And its carried over.
As a Ravens fan, I know that if I get into a particularly heated argument with a Steeler's fan, all I have to say is, "yeah, well Rod Woodson was really good!" There will be a temporary peace between us until someone brings up Iron City vs Natty Boh or whether or not fries belong on a sandwich.
I have been a Steelers fan my whole life I had everything Rod Woods on cards, Starting Lineup, Jerseys and alot more stuff of his. I loved the Steelers so much but Rid just as much I almost switched teams I have never been like that over a player never will be again. On Tecmo Bowl for the SNES, Outside of Barry Sanders, Woodson was the fastest on the game...Kinda wild they were talking about ring sizes in the 3rd Qt..
I think he's easily the greatest defensive back of all time behind only Ronnie Lott. As far as I'm concerned, he's Mr. Woodson. You can have Ed Reed. Those are empty accolades to call him the best safety ever. I was never afraid of Ed Reed. I was honored to see Rod Woodson play in 2002.
@@teezwilliams22 Yeah, all the same, where are the stats?, he was never the best safety of the year according to the numbers. Rod Woodson was the best CB several times.
@@americankulak2294 Huh? WTF are you talking about? Ed led the league in interceptions 3 different times, as a safety. Usually cornerbacks lead the league in picks. I love Rod and he was goated no doubt, but Ed Reed is the best Free Safety in the history of the NFL.
I love that when he signed to a team just to chase a ring, it didn’t work out. But when he prioritized his family and signed with a team that needed him more than he needed them, he got to be a leader of the greatest defense in the history of the game, and a ring came to him.
Absolutely. Troy was very good, even "great." Rod was generational. He was significantly better at corner than Troy was at safety, and was just about as good at safety.

Aw come on! All due respect to Rod Woodson, a tremendous player and fun to watch even as a non-Steeler fan, but you should have shown the first play of that 1996 playoff game against the Pats, since it was his last with Pit. Rod, as he was prone to do, took a risky chance and got burned deep by a long Bledsoe to Glenn hook up. I'd love to see something like this about Ben Coates, since he also got his ring with that Ravens team, but I know better. Ben's lost to time outside New Englanders of a certain age.
Yea I remember a game back in like '94 where they were playing Green Bay and Sterling Sharpe was burning the hell out of Rod Woodson. He didn't have the foot speed of say a Deion so he had to take chances and it would cost him from time to time. Still, moving to Safety when he got to Baltimore was brilliant. He actually mirrored Ronnie Lott in that way. Only two guys I can think of that were All-Pros at both corner and safety.
@@anthonyanderson9303 8 picks and 3 FR as a 37-year-old DB in the NFL is amazing. See though, Belichick didn't wait on McCourty, a Pro Bowl CB in his rookie season. By his 3rd year he was at Safety, not 13th like Rod's. Haha.

Rod's a beautiful person, and badass legend.
Woodson was a GREAT player! He’s an even better man and father.
Woodson made the Ravens secondary legendary
Shay Sharpe and Rod Woodson took Ray Lewis to the next level skill wise and discipline wise
They provided the veteran leadership and SB experience!
Damn Rod used Marvin Harrison on that play against Marshall Faulk! That’s GOAT play right there IMO
Embarrassing two legends on one play is absolutely insane. He gets to live with that highlight forever.

Rod was sick in tecmo bowl. Punt and kick returns for td every time. Pickoffs galore.
Yeah he was on Tecmo Bowl. Rod was no joke.
In Tecmo Bowl the only way I was able to intercept Rice was either using Woodson or Sanders.
Deon Sanders get all the glory but Rod Woodson is the truth at the cornerback and the safety position. The truth!
