What a hell of a way to go out,,, when I die I wish I could be in a amazing rock band and do one last tour of the country and end the tour in my birth place city
No flamboyance. No pyrotechnics. No feuds. No drama between these five. Just the words. And the music. That is what will be remembered. That is what moved us all.
Greetings Hip family from Australia. About three weeks ago I walked into my local bottleshop and the guy in there (a Canadian) was playing these guys. I asked him what the hell is this awesome noise. He told me about the Hip. I went away and smashed it at home for a week. It was all I played. I had no idea. I went in there a week later and told him thank you so much for the recommend. He suggested this documentary. He didn't warn me that I would be crying the whole time. Another tick from Canada, you guys fucking rock!
Watching this as a 23 year old American living in Las Vegas who has never been to Canada and probably has seen snow three times ever in my life. I didn’t even know who the Hip were or really anything about them when Gord died, and that’s such a shame because now I’d do anything to have seen them. I only began to listen to them earlier this year, trying to find new artists to listen to. I came across the Hip and I was kind of interested in them as a band basically really only huge in Canada and practically unknown everywhere else, and I wondered why, honestly. What more can I say? Not only were they an incredible band with incredible songs, Gord was truly one of the most underrated songwriters and lyricists I’ve listened to and him and the Hip both deserve far more credit internationally than what they’ve ever received. He’s become an inspiration of mine not only for his art and how it has influenced me personally, but for his drive and passion for justice in bringing light to historical atrocities that I might not have otherwise known much about, living in the US. Thank you Gord, and thank you to the Tragically Hip for staying true to yourselves no matter what and for the incredible music… maybe someday I’ll take a road trip up north and blast some Hip along the way, seeing Canada for myself.
As Canadians, we know that if the money and fame is to come, it must break into the US. It's been this way for decades. If we do it in Canada, then you'll get what is 'allowable' as this country is led by socialists and communists who don't have the depth of thought to know that they are, and people with too much $$$ are frowned upon. It's sickening. That being said, The HIp we're uniquely Canadian, and we couldn't have such a 'hometown feel' for them if they had gone elsewhere.
Towards the end of the doc he says "people sit around the campfire and play our tunes all over the country." Wrong...all over the world. We play The Hip around campfires here in the good ole USA! Power of the Hip is beyond borders...!!
Maybe so... but he was emphasizing how iconic this band is across the great white north. And how it brings Canadians closer. It has been so wild through the years how a friendship or connection is made when you find other hip fans. You find your people. This is the only band I have seen so many times live. Just like others, of course. I am happy our neighbour's to the south enjoy them too ❤❤❤❤
I hate that it took this documentary for me to learn about this beautiful man and band, but I’m forever grateful for being introduced. From a relatively new fan from south of the border, I feel for Canada, this band is truly special.

I'm not Canadian, but a Buffalonian. This epic tribute to Gord resonates so much. It makes me want to live to the fullest. So consoled that I got a ticket to Hamilton on the last tour.
At that time as a trucker I hoped that entire week everything would fall in place; Rotterdam to Kingston to NC to Jersey to Saint John. Everything had to be on time so I could arrive home for our local screening of the final concert. I made it with just hours to spare and enjoyed it with my daughter who is also a huge fan. On Monday as I travelled down though the states again a sat radio talk show from NYC was calling it the day Canada was closed ha ha. Incredible last show by an incredible band. Pretty good doc too ;-)
Thank you, Canada. Don't know how I never really heard much of these guys until now, despite living up in Wisconsin for a few years in the mid 1990s. Kind of glad yinz kept them as your own, though. It's a good reminder for me as a U.S.ian that our northern neighbor has their own mysterious loves we can't ever fully understand, and certainly can't co-opt. Very cool. What a great song writer, performer & band of true friends. I feel like I just discovered some secret treasure.
I watch this once a year. Reminding me how good we look as a Canadian when we all unite for a common cause. But overall, for my love for the Hip. The best band ever.
Someone quoted on another video of the crowds watching the playing of Ahead by a Century in the last show - "Sometimes, something is perfect" and I think he meant exactly what you are referring to. It's a beautiful thing, it truly is. The only other moment that reminds me of this is the 2010 golden goal. Cherish these moments - they don't come around very often.
I know I'm not the only American fan....but I've always felt like the biggest American fan. Gord is one of the most beautiful souls I've ever had the fortune of seeing and hearing in person. I was so sad I couldn't make a show on the last tour. Gord, you've spoken to me so many times in my life. You've brought me so much love, peace, and the sadness I feel thinking you're gone feels unmeasurable. Gord and The Hip will live on forever in each and everyone of us. RIP
UK fan here. I discovered the Hip too late to ever see them live but Gord's lyrics mean the world to me and The Hip will always be one of my favourite bands!
Saw the hip 20 times, 15 of those before 1993. Got to meet the band, and when I was playing in Kingston ended up at the studio in Bath. Life got busy and I couldn't get to as many shows as I wanted. Still imo one of the best live acts of their era.
American fan here, gotta say I really love this band, a Canadian gem! Thanks Canada for producing some of my favorite music and artists. Watching this for the 4th time in the last week. RIP Gord💙
When he kisses his band mates before going on stage, telling them he loves them, I completely lost it. Sobbing like a child. Beautiful documentary about such an amazing group of people who will always hold a special place in my heart and soul.

The Tragically Hip touched my life. I was too young to get in, but I remember the Lakeview Manor where they got their start. I remember Smalltown Bringdown being such a low-key hit and the top 40 station, 1380 CKLC, in Kingston playing the song, especially during evening rotation. I later worked at said radio station and boy we proudly played a lot of Hip. I remember going to my local Metro grocery store on Princess Street and there's Rob Baker getting his own groceries, like everyone else. I got to play pick up hockey with a few of the guys in the band. There was no talk about the band or music. They were just there to play hockey. They are all incredibly talented and have the ability to be extremely confident without arrogance. I am now in my own battle with stage 4 cancer. Of course, I look forward to seeing my relatives in the next life, and really hope Gord might belt out a few tunes for me too!

The Hip is in my top two favorite bands. I have followed them since I first heard them in the US on Canadian radio. I'm now almost 56 and my 15 year old son is a huge Hip fan I'm proud to say. Just sad that he never got to see them......
The heart of Canada. It's like no time passed at all, that's how powerful of a last memory, and tour this was. Forever in our hearts, we are with you gordo. You landed the balloon, and it was glorious, we all cheered. -Love
Gord is the only person that makes me cry every time I hear him sing or see him in an interview, almost 7 years after he left the earth and started walking amongst the stars…gets me every time, and I’ve lost A LOT of people in my 69 years…
I think a lot of people would agree with you, when you hear Gord singing, you get emotional and can't help it. You miss him and you miss TTH and wish they were touring and putting out another album.
I tried to watch this love love the hip so fully completely however got 15-20 minutes in and was sobbing like a baby I miss his live shows I miss whst could of been of course I’m happy he left a strong beautiful body of work I can’t imagine what his fam and band and friends feel speechless right now
I was fortunate to live my formative years Musically in northern Vermont 1 mile from the Canadian border in the early 90’s. The Hip were a HUGE part of the scene there. Everyone regardless of your background LOVED The Hip. There may have been bigger bands worldwide but in the history of rock, I’m not sure any band came in, left a spot in people’s hearts, and left with people being able to say goodbye and honor and thank them the way they did for the hip. I’ve tried to introduce people to them since but I’ve come to understand you had to be part of it to understand. And I only am lucky enough to have been close enough to the Canadian culture to latch on. Long live The Hip!!
I was lucky enough to live across the st lawrence river from kingston ont in the states and i was lucky enough to grow up to these guys, they were there at every important moment in my (at the time) young life, ive seen them live probably 15 times over the years and the tears still fall every time i watch this, we all miss you so much gord i still can't believe your gone, i can still remember listening to chez 106.1 and 106.9 the bear whenever the new hip album was dropping it was more than magical! So thank you guys and we still love you and there will never, ever be a band like The Tragically Hip again, RIP Gord the lord needed your beautiful soul back home but until we meet again....
My mom, grandpa and I watched this on the day it aired. We all balled our eyes out especially my mom who was a huge fan of them. Rip Gord Downie, we will never forget you and will always love you
i’m watching this for the fourth time ...i haven’t watched the new doc yet...i think i’m not ready. something just occurred to me..throughout this entire tour and especially the airing of this specific doc there was no forwardness of monetary gain that happened. obviously ticket sales happened but i feel like the thought of...”how can many companies make a ton of money off of this?” never really happened and if it did it wasn’t in the countries face like usual. i dunno if that makes sense. i just feel like as a country we just wanted to celebrate this special man and this special band and our country. and i like that. thanks for posting 🇨🇦 🎩
"Him!....Here!....Now!...NOOOO!" When you hear Gord singing that in regards the deadly tumor,,,man if that doesn't get you in the feels...than I don't know..great Doc,,so interesting to see behind the scenes of the last tour and to hear from other band members, managers what it was like. Seen the Hip many times including last tour in Hamilton. Was a lead singer of Hip cover band for years. They wrote it all. Thanks for letting me be cool/relevant in countless gigs/pubs for a time. Major thanks guys!
Absolutely was. It felt like the entire country came to a halt and came together on that last night in Kingston. Still gives me chills to think about . I hate that Gord isn't here anymore, it's so unfair.
Every bit of this is and was glorious. The tiyr was an act of the tmost generosity. This documentary is like a beautiful keepsake. Thanks for all of it.
Anytime, and yes you can access this anytime you would like. This is still available if you want to reminisce about the very best of The Tragically Hip.
I remember sitting alone, as always, in a theatre watching the final show that was broadcast live coast to coast. Last time I saw them was Another Roadside Attraction over 2 decades earlier.
I’m not much of a fan of these guys. But watching the his documentary has made me respect these guy a lot more now then I use to and how much they mean to us Canadians.
My brother heard New Orleans is sinking on a VA radio station in 1990. That's all it took for me. Getting to meet them is maybe the high point of my life. I'm nobody and they treated me like somebody. They were so nice. I told Gord when i shook his hand, "well i can die now" and he said "no, dont do that" was definitely an exchange I will never forget.
did you see Gord in the trailer park boys. he was eating a bologna sandwich and even played a cop. lol.th-cam.com/video/agVKKbOOIBU/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUdZ29yZCBkb3duaWUgdHJhaWxlciBwYXJrIGJveXM%3D
Saw this a couple times when it came out, and that was it. I can watch a few snippets, but I can't sit through the whole thing again. It's too hard to take without being moved to tears. 😢
I was at a party with a bunch of English teachers who were in Japan for the JET program. This was in 1997. A an American teacher said to me I don't get the Hip. All you Canadians put it on at parties. She thought they were no better than her high school grunge bad in Ohio. I was taken aback at the time but all these years later I wish had said this: I guess you need to be Canadian to get it. They make me proud of my history. The documentary out this year gave me a better sense of how remarkable these musicians were.
"There's this F√ckin' Band you Gotta See".....Forever Grateful that the Hip came to western New York frequently back in the day. To this day I pimp them out to anyone that will listen. It amazes me with all that talent how many people never heard of Them. Hopefully there's more in the vault cuz the Road Apple scraps are quite a tasty treat!!
What's the point of living when you can't live forever? If there was ever someone who needed to be alive forever and sing and tell stories and represent Canada it was Gord.

I tried to watch this love love the hip so fully completely however got 15-20 minutes in and was sobbing like a baby I miss his live shows I miss whst could of been of course I’m happy he left a strong beautiful body of work I can’t imagine what his fam and band and friends feel speechless right now
Thank you The songs of my whole life. First concert at Richardson stadium as well as the best when they did almost home at fort henry. Truly missed
The band’s music is part of our dna now🎁
Watched the last show at the Queens in Nanaimo, BC. Absolutely incredible.
I still cry anytime i hear any of the Grace Too versions from this tour. ❤ Love them all !!
Still makes me well up. Thanks guys for the soundtrack of my young life!
Sail on Gordie!
I was at the Victoria concert. 8 years later it's still so special.
@@fidub72 was this concert at the Victoria Royals hockey rink?
Such a great band. I was lucky enough to see them play in the UK.
RIP Gord.
Gord is my girlfriends uncle. Words can not describe who he was...or what he meant to his family and friends ❤️
The Hip meant so much to me.
Me, too.
I remember the first time I heard The Hip, 1991, Road Apples.
Rip Gord Downie, we will never forget you and will always love you
Thanks for this. Behind the scenes..always an eye opener..Gord was so brave.
i’m watching this for the fourth time ...i haven’t watched the new doc yet...i think i’m not ready. something just occurred to me..throughout this entire tour and especially the airing of this specific doc there was no forwardness of monetary gain that happened. obviously ticket sales happened but i feel like the thought of...”how can many companies make a ton of money off of this?” never really happened and if it did it wasn’t in the countries face like usual. i dunno if that makes sense. i just feel like as a country we just wanted to celebrate this special man and this special band and our country. and i like that. thanks for posting 🇨🇦 🎩
Love the Hip and rest in peace Gord you are deeply missed❤
A total Canadian cathartic experience if there ever was one
Absolutely was. It felt like the entire country came to a halt and came together on that last night in Kingston. Still gives me chills to think about . I hate that Gord isn't here anymore, it's so unfair.
Thank You, Gord 😇
What a legend. Thank you Gord
Thank You "The Tragically Hip"
The Hip meant a great deal to me and my friends. Very sad how it ended. RIP Gord!!!
Thank you so much for sharing this.
Here to watch this every year on this date, thanks for the upload...
23:03 : "A face so full of meaning, as to almost make it glow" 💜💜💜
"For a good life we just might have to weaken" That's from "It's A Good Life If You Don't Weaken" from the 2002 album "In Violet Light".
I waited 7 years to watch this and I still cried my eyes out.
Every bit of this is and was glorious. The tiyr was an act of the tmost generosity. This documentary is like a beautiful keepsake. Thanks for all of it.
Thank you for posting this. I think everyone should have access to this for free. Everyone should learn about the hip and gordie
Love you Gord. Love the hip.
That song's from the 1989 album titled: "Up To Here".
Saw this a couple times when it came out, and that was it. I can watch a few snippets, but I can't sit through the whole thing again. It's too hard to take without being moved to tears. 😢
Jesus im crying again watching this.
They pulled it off. Gord pulled it off. I'm still in shock. What a summer...
Thank you for the video. So emotional.
Gord will be in the hearts of myself and my children for eternity..
Loved living on the Border this time.
I am happy he made a book
I am Brazilian. I knew this band when I moved to Canada. Unfortunately it has been on their last show.
Thank you for posting this!
Thank you for this xx
probably the greatest thing to come from canada ever.
I have one word ! 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚
I can’t believe this video has only 50k views.
What's the point of living when you can't live forever? If there was ever someone who needed to be alive forever and sing and tell stories and represent Canada it was Gord.
I watch it once.. I ant bring myself to watch it again. The finality of life is bettersweet thought to hold and balance.. so sad
