I always liked the Aspen. My neighbor had a black one just like yours. Black is the only color for them IMO. When I painted my Nova gnats landed in my paint and I had to sand them out and spray it once more. Your car looks good!
I really like the looks of this car! It shines like crazy! I think a slant 6 RT is in your future! Rob all of the parts you need from the the other cars and assemble it as a 6 cylinder !
Holy crap the car looks good and I like the older front end on the car it looks better then what you have to work with because those 78/9 grills broke so easy and the older they get the more brittle they are. The one I have I had to fix and every time I pop the hood I got to be gentle reaching in to undo the latch because any pressure on that damn plastic it will break into pieces and damn near ever car has a broken grille or just about to break so using that grill was the best thing you could do. Anyway the car looks good I love it
I watched the entire series of this car because I just bought a '78 Aspen Super Coupe. She's a heap and will need a lot of work to get it nice, but I'm gonna just slowly work on it to get it where she needs to be. Your video series got me super inspired and I'll have to go back and watch them as I progress with my Aspen. Great work, she looks great!
We are keeping ours also we got about $6000 into it but we did a new drive train engine -trans no rear end shit is so expensive anymore it doesnt take much 1k in tires alone ..we like how cost minded you are ..and same as you i still need a headliner also ..great job

you did the car nice. i think you could get 12-14k. if you had a open weekend i would put the slant 6 and other extra parts into the white r/t so the car would be a whole vehicle. most people dont have the space where they could do major work ie. motor swaps it would probably sell fast for 4.5k ish
if you ever go back to do more to this car, the rear seat would be easy to recolor with SEM flexible vinyl dye. It can be color matched to that later 70s red. This could also be applied to the hard plastic side panels, the headliner, the door panels and armrests, the foot well panels and to the front seats. It's pretty easy to do, a handheld steam cleaner is handy for vinyl fabric cleaning. prep work. I also use Leatherique's wipe on dyes, they recolor vinyl as well as leather.

the slant 6 is a fine engine in these FMJ body cars. Their smooth stump pulling straight 6 torque goes with the very smooth ride the transverse torsion bar / isolated front subframe gives these cars. We had one for Driver's Ed and it was far superior over the Maverick that got traded in.
That was a nice build, I enjoyed watching your journey and the car turned out great. I think you are in the ball park of your pricing range. You are right about the tiers of Mopars with the Challengers, Chargers, Cudas, etc. at the top, the Darts, Dusters in the middle and the others at the bottom which still is good money.

ALL SAT ON 100 ACRE'S OF LAND IN RURAL OHIO........ STATE LINE @ THE TIME WAS JUST ACROSS THE RIVER....where the mom & dad lived for ever generation after generation......... 1 monday morning 3 guy's & a gal drove out from sunny calif,. just for the 2 dodge aspen's ( the nascar driver car's we were alway's told OFF LIMIT'S NO MATTER WHAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WELL 2 WKS,. GO BY & THE CALIF,. PPL,. Ok, I have to say that I hate the rear shackles and air shocks and wheels sticking out past the quarters look since I bought a 440 GTX in 1979 with that crud on it. The first thing I did was take that off. Terrible handling, braking , and acceleration as well as damage to the springs. Only guys with no knowledge of cars did that "back in the day " and they were a joke to guys with real muscle cars. Look for the 73 Plymouth Fury in the movie "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot". But you have a much, much more serious problem. Your rear spring shackle is facing the wrong way. It should be slanted to the rear top to bottom. That is, the bottom should be rearward of the top. Yours are the other way. That makes your car an extreme hazard to drive on the freeway. I don't know how it happened. Shackles and air shocks aren't usually enough to reverse the shackle angle. You'd just about have to have the wrong springs (too short). This is a common hazard when 4x4 guys put lift kit springs on with too much arch, effectively shortening them. If you don't believe me, read the Chassis Manual from the Mopar Bible. If I had your email, I could send you a copy. I like the project and subscribed to your channel, so I hate to be negative. But this is a real safety issue.

"I had valuable baseball cards in the spokes of my bicycle with training wheels." Who would do that again as an adult? But you have reversed the shackle angle this time. I don't know if you did it when you were a kid, but this has gone past the level of being driveable. I will send you the info if you show me a link to your email.
Shackles only go on one way so there's no way to adjust angle. Shackles are just a way to raise the rear end up without costly air shocks (and stiff ride) or re-arched springs. I haven't had a problem with them.
Quoting from the Mopar Chassis book, pn P5249441...p 165-166 "the best performance is obtained with a shackle no more than an inch longer than stock. If the shackles become too long the cars handling and in many cases its acceleration deteriorate to the point of becoming unaccepatable. The rear shackle angle should be vertical or to the rear but never to the front....This means that the rear eye should be directly below or to the rear slightly of the shackle pivot in the body. If this isn't the case, by move the pivot point hole in the body forward." P 166 has a diagram. If you are using the stock springs and not swapped to shorter ones and the stock front hanger all you have to do is drill another hole in the rear shackles in the stock location. You can even let the extra 6 inches hang down if you want that look. It would be better to put the stock shackles on since they are stronger and bushed. Around 1978-82, before you were owning your first Volare/Aspen, I was owning my first 3 original 440 B bodies. A 72 Road Runner, followed by a 69 GTX, then a 68 Charger RT. At first the GTX handled horribly. Braking was bad, too. Because it had those Honest Charlie strap shackles. I took them off and took them to a muffler shop and had the extra inches torched off. (unfortunately, the factory shackles didn't come with the car) There were enough holes in it so that I didn't have to have them redrilled to put the rear spring at the stock height. After that the GTX handled and brakes as well as the Charger RT. Which is to say VERY well, outstanding for a car that big! It still couldn't match the 72 Road Runner, but that was a better car. And my car didn't even have the wrong shackle angle. Just too much shackle length! I'm saying this to keep you and a rare car safe, not because I hate the look, which I do admittedly , since, good looks is "in the eye of the beholder". If you drive the Aspen with the suspension correct height and angle for a while, then decide if you dislike it, you can always put it back. If you delete this after reading this I'm ok with that. I don't want to be a downer on your success getting the car going and looking good. I really like the choice of matte black on the hood and the subtle contrast with the gloss black on the body.
@@auteurfiddler8706 As a car guy myself and one who has completly restored several cars I can say that everyone has their own opinion and way of doing things. In this case he built the car he wanted and it is his car clearly. He put the money and effort into you did not. I have also drove cars with rear shackles on them and have not had issues either. Your experience my be different but then again your car was likely not the same car as this. Point here is its his car, his money and his time and work invested in this car. Therefore its not right for you to pick on it or insinuate that he does not know what he is doing.
In the video I forgot to mention the cost of the Phoenix Graphics decals which was $255.45 but it was written down and included in cost.

Fenders and hood the same. Bumper for 76-77 is different.

I had a red aspen as my high school car, got in trouble and my dad somehow got rid of it...
Happened to me too but was a Lemans. My father sent it to the scrap yard.

I had shackles on my 77 Volare when I was a kid. Drove it for 50k trouble free miles.There's no air shocks on it.

After that the GTX handled and brakes as well as the Charger RT. Which is to say VERY well, outstanding for a car that big! It still couldn't match the 72 Road Runner, but that was a better car. And my car didn't even have the wrong shackle angle. Just too much shackle length!
I'm saying this to keep you and a rare car safe, not because I hate the look, which I do admittedly , since, good looks is "in the eye of the beholder". If you drive the Aspen with the suspension correct height and angle for a while, then decide if you dislike it, you can always put it back.
If you delete this after reading this I'm ok with that. I don't want to be a downer on your success getting the car going and looking good. I really like the choice of matte black on the hood and the subtle contrast with the gloss black on the body.
@@auteurfiddler8706 As a car guy myself and one who has completly restored several cars I can say that everyone has their own opinion and way of doing things. In this case he built the car he wanted and it is his car clearly. He put the money and effort into you did not. I have also drove cars with rear shackles on them and have not had issues either. Your experience my be different but then again your car was likely not the same car as this. Point here is its his car, his money and his time and work invested in this car. Therefore its not right for you to pick on it or insinuate that he does not know what he is doing.
