I must be in the minority. I enjoy seeing common Bowser minions in Mario spinoffs. Goomba may seem like a basic pick, but he is rarely playable compared to Koopa, Boo or Shy Guy. I also _really_ like playing as the common Koopa Troopa, Hammer Bro, and Dry Bones in specific games. If I were to craft a 20-character roster, I'd stick with the Big Eight and Secondary Characters. For clarification, I see the Big Eight as Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, Wario, Donkey Kong, and Bowser. For the Secondary Characters, that includes Waluigi, Daisy, Birdo, Bowser Jr., Diddy Kong, and Toadette. All that adds up to 14. From there, I'd be sure to include Rosalina and Pauline as recurring stars. Beyond that can be a mix between Bowser minions, bosses like Petey Piranha, King Boo, Big Bob-omb, or Kamek, and maybe an oddball choice like Dixie Kong or Nabbit. Any mix of those combined with the Big Eight and Secondary Characters would make a solid roster, I'd say. Props for bringing up Mario Golf: World Tour. I love the selection there!
yeah i always feel like they can round a larger roster together! its just a shame that there are so many more main characters who probably should have a slot in smaller roster games
I personally love minion representation because like how many games can you play as chargin chuck (besides it’s just funny and nice to see a really obscure minion like blooper or ninji getting added to a spin off game)

The thing about this thought experiment is that different spin-offs have different ideas for characters (Example: Boo for the Mario Party games, but King Boo for the Mario Kart games) So what I think would be the perfect 20 character roster is to have a selection of characters that would fit with all spin-offs regardless of its differences and preferences I'd go with Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Toad, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Wario, Koopa, Daisy, Waluigi, Rosalina, Toadette, Bowser Jr, Birdo, Diddy Kong, Shy Guy, Kamek, Pauline, and Nabbit
That Mario Golf World Tour roster, with the exception of Pauline in Gold Mario’s place and ParaTroopa swapped for Dry Bones, should be THE definitive roster for any Mario spin-off in my humble opinion. It’s literally perfectly crafted for any Mario fan to find enjoyment in. To fill in the last four spots on that board as DLC, I think Goomba, Shy Guy, Petey, and King Bob-Omb would do just nicely. Also, as a tangent, I think Kamek and Diddy should already officially be mainstays at this point, but if Kamek has to take the hosting duties to allow Toad/Toadette to be playable I’m okay with that.
Dry bones would definitely be my 21st character but like I said I feel like paratroopa just adds more to this group! And yeah that’s what I thought about that group it ticks every box a reasonable fan could ask for :)
Replace paratroopa with regular Koopa Troopa and you’re golden, and this is coming from someone who prefers paratroopa (Also replace regular boo with King Boo)
I don’t think Smash should count cause the “minions” are their own character. And most of the rosters you said had too many minions only had around 5-7 out of 20 which is like under 40% which doesn’t seem problematic to me.
yeah it's not problematic in and of itself but when it's just a roster of 20 too many of them can eat away at slots that could go to main characters, if this was for a roster of 30 id basically want those extra 10 slots to entirely got to minions :)
I like this one, probably my ideal roster as well. Everyone having a pairing or at least similar character makes sense. Rosalina always felt kinda awkward as the "third wheel" princess, so having Pauline as another human woman to round them out is great, since Mario and the other guys have had 4 basically since Mario Party 3. Then you have two Toad options in Toad/Toadette, two dinos in Yoshi/Birdo, two 'Bowsers' in Bowser/Jr., and two Kongs in DK and Diddy. Then no individual character feels out of place, since they always have a buddy. Meanwhile you can flex those other 4 slots however you want for minions. I think Boo (or King Boo) and some variant of Koopa Troopa (including Dry Bones) are always a safe bet, and then they have 2 more slots to use however they want with whatever random minion of the week they feel like propping up. But either way this is just a starting point, so those random niche picks might not even have to count towards those 4 enemy slots you mentioned, and instead they could just be specific newcomer slots. Either way I think you nailed it with the baseline 'named characters'.

Overall, I can’t see much backlash with this roster in any Mario spinoff. But please feel free to prove me wrong 🫠

yeah i think there's definitely a distinction to be made between characters that should appear in small rosters compared to big rosters. king boo probably should be in over boo at every chance but it's just kind of the fact that he isnt and boo appears more often that makes me not really consider it
@@bengrainger2887 Yea I personally chose Boo/King Boo over Petey Piranha or any other enemy/boss as to include an iconic character from the Luigi's Mansion franchise & from Super Mario Bros. 3. They can use Boo in some games & King Boo in others within the same system (like Mario Sluggers & Mario Party 8).
I agree primarily with the golf world tour roster, except I’d swap out Paratroopa for a regular Koopa, gold Mario for Pauline, and Nabbit for Shy Guy. Trust me I love Nabbit, but in a roster of 20, he seems kinda obscure.
that's fair enough if you still see nabbit as obscure but i think him being playable in wonder hopefully means he's seen as a main-ish non-obscure character at least for now, and in general i feel like he's a good rep for the modern platformers :)
How I would do a base 20 Roster as of now: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, DK, Wario, Bowser, Birdo, Daisy, Bowser Jr, Toadette, Rodalina, Pauline, Nabbit, Florian, Diddy, King Boo, Petey, and Waluigi. If you wondered why I put him last, it’s because he’s yet to make the transition to main games like Toadette did 😅

I basically always prefer actual characters over random minions. Who is this Goomba? Who is this Koopa Troopa? We'll never know. They have loads of characters they can tie in, especially from the RPG series. Goombella, Koops, Vivian, or Bobbery would be a smash hit here. But they don't even have to go that far. There are seven Koopalings to pick from, along with four reasonably-sized Broodals, Cappy, Tiara, Nabbit, eighteen unused WarioWare characters, and a lot of Kongs. Let's get Diddy and Dixie back! And Toadsworth was a fine choice for a host character. He's too old to party hard with the rest of them, but he can at least facilitate a good time! Plus, if we're tying in RPG characters, Starlow would make for a great assistant.
That said, here's my 20 (five per row) for Mario Party: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yoshi, Wario, Waluigi, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Rosalina, Birdo, Pauline, Bowser Jr., Toad, Toadette... And the curveballs: Dixie Kong, Goombella, Harriet, Cappy, and Jimmy T. No need to have Bowser here, as he's always been right at home as the party villain. No faceless mooks either (this Toad is the character who's always been a major player, not just a random Toad).

yeah like i said this is definitely just a base roster, luckily only strikers and mario party superstars this gen ended up with a roster under 20 so it seems like they aim above that now it just would be nice to have a consistent cast
ikr the fact that dry bones and spike were both playable in the first 10 games and dont appear anywhere else in the game there was literally no reason for them not to be there they would've rounded out that roster perfectly

Great video!! I wanna try my own too! 1. Mario 2. Luigi 3. Peach 4. Daisy 5. Rosalina The staples, these 5 should just be in everything. 6. Toad 7. Toadette 8. Wario 9. Waluigi 10. Yoshi 11. Birdo 12. Donkey Kong Not as high priority as the first 5, but really just should be staples. 13. Bowser 14. Bowser Jr 15. Shy Guy 16. Petey Piranha 17. A slot for a boss fight from the newest Mario game at the time (ie: Madame Broode from Odyssey, Motley Bossblob from 3D World, etc.) Villains, gotta have them! I think Shy Guy is the perfect enemy that everyone likes seeing and can really just fit into any spin off. I also personally think that with how the Mario series always introduces new characters, so I think adding on a new character as a temporary addition is very nice (such as King Boo in Mario Kart and Honey Queen in Mario Kart 7, even if shes not a villain) 18-19. Going further with my point on 17, I'd actually say to have these slots be dedicated to new characters too. Like.. Cappy and an NPC resident from one of the kingdoms in Odyssey! Or heck, even the Talking Flower from Wonder! 20. Vivian This might be really out there, but I think there needs to be a day that an RPG character comes to the Mario spin offs tbh. And with her popularity and unique design, I think Vivian's the perfect choice
id love to see vivian in something! although it'll probably only happen if her "species" of ghost is brought into 3d first because i just cant see them being bothered with 3d modelling her unless it can be done more easily you know, i think it's always good to represent the more modern games even if they're not going to be relevant forever and even though id probably put them in the 21st and beyond slot i can definitely see the appeal of always having a slot reserved, who knows nabbit might not be relevant for much longer and in that scenario i think id just have him be the revolving door slot
My problem with minions in general is that I prefer unique characters much more than generic ones (like goombas, koopas, boos and maybe even toad), for example, id prefer captain toad over regular toad and king boo over regular boo, the thing is minions doo need representation but there arent much unique variants that i know of, maybe goombella or koops from paper mario but they arent that popular

Goomba is a character wich i think deserves more, he’s iconic and i love his simple design.

i love it too and enjoy getting as many minions as possible but they work a lot better as choices in bigger rosters
I just want characters from more recent titles and not just either reskins or one of many of Bowser's minions who are basically everywhere.

@@bengrainger2887 Yea I personally chose Boo/King Boo over Petey Piranha or any other enemy/boss as to include an iconic character from the Luigi's Mansion franchise & from Super Mario Bros. 3. They can use Boo in some games & King Boo in others within the same system (like Mario Sluggers & Mario Party 8).
I agree primarily with the golf world tour roster, except I’d swap out Paratroopa for a regular Koopa, gold Mario for Pauline, and Nabbit for Shy Guy. Trust me I love Nabbit, but in a roster of 20, he seems kinda obscure.
that's fair enough if you still see nabbit as obscure but i think him being playable in wonder hopefully means he's seen as a main-ish non-obscure character at least for now, and in general i feel like he's a good rep for the modern platformers :)

I basically always prefer actual characters over random minions. Who is this Goomba? Who is this Koopa Troopa? We'll never know.
They have loads of characters they can tie in, especially from the RPG series. Goombella, Koops, Vivian, or Bobbery would be a smash hit here.
But they don't even have to go that far. There are seven Koopalings to pick from, along with four reasonably-sized Broodals, Cappy, Tiara, Nabbit, eighteen unused WarioWare characters, and a lot of Kongs. Let's get Diddy and Dixie back!
And Toadsworth was a fine choice for a host character. He's too old to party hard with the rest of them, but he can at least facilitate a good time! Plus, if we're tying in RPG characters, Starlow would make for a great assistant.
That said, here's my 20 (five per row) for Mario Party:

Easy way to make a 20 character roster, I'd ideally make a 24-26 character roster instead as just 20 completely alienates a lot of characters that could be there but aren't because of the roster size, great video by the way
yeah like i said this is definitely just a base roster, luckily only strikers and mario party superstars this gen ended up with a roster under 20 so it seems like they aim above that now it just would be nice to have a consistent cast

ikr the fact that dry bones and spike were both playable in the first 10 games and dont appear anywhere else in the game there was literally no reason for them not to be there they would've rounded out that roster perfectly
@@bengrainger2887 Thank god we have jamboree to fix just about every major issue there was in superstars, I believe mario's rainbow castle and western land were planned dlc for superstars but were carried over to jamboree instead

Villains, gotta have them! I think Shy Guy is the perfect enemy that everyone likes seeing and can really just fit into any spin off.
I also personally think that with how the Mario series always introduces new characters, so I think adding on a new character as a temporary addition is very nice (such as King Boo in Mario Kart and Honey Queen in Mario Kart 7, even if shes not a villain)
18-19. Going further with my point on 17, I'd actually say to have these slots be dedicated to new characters too. Like.. Cappy and an NPC resident from one of the kingdoms in Odyssey! Or heck, even the Talking Flower from Wonder!
20. Vivian
This might be really out there, but I think there needs to be a day that an RPG character comes to the Mario spin offs tbh. And with her popularity and unique design, I think Vivian's the perfect choice
id love to see vivian in something! although it'll probably only happen if her "species" of ghost is brought into 3d first because i just cant see them being bothered with 3d modelling her unless it can be done more easily you know, i think it's always good to represent the more modern games even if they're not going to be relevant forever and even though id probably put them in the 21st and beyond slot i can definitely see the appeal of always having a slot reserved, who knows nabbit might not be relevant for much longer and in that scenario i think id just have him be the revolving door slot

My problem with minions in general is that I prefer unique characters much more than generic ones (like goombas, koopas, boos and maybe even toad), for example, id prefer captain toad over regular toad and king boo over regular boo, the thing is minions doo need representation but there arent much unique variants that i know of, maybe goombella or koops from paper mario but they arent that popular

I don’t think Smash should count cause the “minions” are their own character. And most of the rosters you said had too many minions only had around 5-7 out of 20 which is like under 40% which doesn’t seem problematic to me.
