How Akhenaten Demolished Centuries of Egyptian Tradition

  • When Akhenaten came to power, he recreated the religious universe by doing away with polytheism and insisting his subjects worship Aten, the sun god. He also gave himself, and his queen Nefertiti, a sacred promotion.

You said it - religion is power. One reason Akhenaten did away with the old gods is that it by doing so he cut back the power of the priests ....

Some Pharoahs were Nubian (darker skinned) and others were not. The fact is that Lower Egypt (the north) is right at the top of Africa. The darkest skinned Africans are from Central Africa.
Naturally their skin color doesn't really matter. They were all kings and I'm sure the ancients didn't question their power based on nothing more than skin color.

    • @36thgallardo
      @36thgallardo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +32

I wasn't speaking in absolutes, I was speaking in general. In general, the darkest skinned Africans are from the areas around Ethiopia, Niger, Chad and so forth. Not that their skin color really matters.

Ancient Egyptian "queens" were referred to as female kings, since their language did not have a word for queen.
Also, Akhenaten lived during the late 8th dynasty, which at the time the word Pharaoh didn't exist either. The title only came into their culture during the 19th dynasty, so calling king's who lived earlier than the 19th dynasty Pharaohs is inaccurate and misleading.

The Egyptians actually called him a liberator. The Greek Ptolemies who ruled Egypt after Alexander were always a minority in Egypt, never a majority....they just lived there and ruled, they didn't mix with the common people. So if Egypt were majority black when the Ptolemies began their reign, where did they go? Who are the people who live in Egypt today? Aten is more accurately rendered Atun, directly analogous to the Hebrew Adon. In both languages the name is translated LORD.
AKHENATEN was dedicated to the worship of the god he called the LORD. Ultimately, Sun worship is connected with the Egyptian god Ra. At some point in his spiritual formation, AKHENATEN conflated Egyptian Sun worship with the worship of the ATUN or ADON.....most likely deriving from the monotheistic worship of a historical Egyptian predesesor, JOSEPH (of Israel). It is likely that for him the observable Sun-disk in the sky was an iconic image, of the LORD - ADON - ATUN. He obviously had a revelatory experience in his spiritual development and became firmly devoted to the worship of this one god. He was as close to true monotheism as you could get at that time.

But, modern scholars have said NOT. I have come to believe that there is a direct connection between Israelite monotheism and Akhenaten's religion. The details have yet to be fully fleshed out, possibly because of historical biases. Two works that come at it from different directions........

      2) Moses and Akhenaten by Ahmed Osman

The fact remains that there is a LOT we don't know about the ancient world. What we do know is that the Egyptian empire at it's height was a mixture of peoples who came from many places. Kings sent their daughters to the pharaohs from every kingdom the Egyptians did business with. Some were black. Some were not. Personally, I look forward to the day when people cease to be divided by race and manipulated by their leaders but I fear that is a long way off yet.

DNA taken from ancient Egyptians from the Third Intermediate period right to the Roman era, shows ancient Egyptians were more Middle Eastern and less Sub-Saharan than modern Egyptians. The true Egyptian descendants, the COPTS, carry MTDNA which entered North Africa 30 000 years ago, meaning they have lived in Egypt since 30 000 years ago, just like some Berbers who also carry MTDNA U6 from their ancient Cro-Magnon ancestor. So even with different nations conquering Egypt, ancient Egyptians are modern Egyptians! The majority of Egyptians were reddish brown, similar to modern Arabs. But the same culture extended into Kush (modern north Sudan), only with smaller, pointier pyramids, and the people who had it in Sudan were black. The Kushites at one point conquered and ruled Egypt, then went back home and took the culture home with them. So it’s a fair bet that there would have been some exchange of personnel, and that there would have been some black people living in Egypt and Egyptians living in Kush.

Aten was worshiped before Akhenaten as a aspect of the sun god Ra
Akhenaten played a power game with the Amun priesthood and he wanted to bring the sun god back to primary importance. He was also afraid of the Amun priesthood having to much political power so he said only he and his family can directly receive the blessings. For me I think that when Akhenaten Lord of the Sun God Aten Ra, son of the Sun maried her sister wife with one eye of a sign of a Moon God Amun Ra was indeed meaningful because when they met during the eclipse of the Sun and the Moon they produced a prince Tutankhamun belongs to the Moon God Amun Ra because in my Buganda culture or tradition a son of a King always belongs to a woman who depends on a Moon circle to get pregnant, therefore was the reason why the young Tutankhamun had to worship a Moon God Amun Ra which confused the Egyptians who trusted his father Akhenaten's idea of one God Aten Ra whom the Muslims also got the name Allah because Abraham or Ibrahim had the same idea of one God but likewise also the Muslims depends on the Moon to praise Allah or Ra because the Sun and the Moon are responsible for creating man or Adam

Akhenaten did not worship a sun god or a moon god. The god he advocated was unseen, "the hidden one" the source of all power. This god did not have a physical representation.

The only reason he added Aten was for the people to worship him (Akhenaten) so he had more power because people worshiped Aten through the current pharaoh.

No, Amun ans Aten are two entirely different Gods. Amun is one of the earliest and most worshiped Gods in the ancient Egyptian society. The Aten was the solor disc, at first a minor aspect of Ra, then transformed into a singular God.

Amun was originally a wind god that became associated with the sun thanks to Heliopolis, which believed Ra (a sun god) was the supreme god. They decided that all the other 'supreme gods' that the Egyptians worshiped (it wasn't exactly a well organized or unified religion) were just alternate versions of Ra, thus why you see names like Amun-ra, Sobek-ra, sometimes Aten-ra, etc... Aten himself was a personification of the sun itself. Aten worship was abandoned after the death of Akhenaten, whose failed reform forever tainted the Aten's reputation in ancient Egypt. I don't think Aten was that popular before hand anyway, since people saw him (it?) as too different from humans for them to comprehend, unlike all the other gods.

If the father of one God Akhenaten was the man behind the idea of monotheism clashed by his own son Tutankhamun I think that in future the idea of Ibrahim will also face the same fate
