  • The Pinan kata originated in Okinawa and were adapted by Anko Itosu from older kata such as Kusanku and Channan into forms suitable for teaching karate to young students. When Gichin Funakoshi brought karate to Japan, he renamed the kata to Heian, which is translated as "peaceful and calm". Pinan is the Chinese Pinyin notation of 平安, which means also "peaceful and calm". Tang Soo Do (Korean Karate) systems also practice these kata; they are termed, "Pyong-an" or "Pyung Ahn", which is a Korean pronunciation of the term "pin-an".

Man-a-live that noise is unbelievable, which is very disappointing as the translator from Japanese into English is the highly respected Dave Hooper. Mr. Hooper has lived in Japan for many years & studied karate before moving to Japan, so I am confident that his translation, along with his karate experience would provide wonderful insights into the points that Naka Sensei is attempting to make.

Naka Sensei has a way of lighting up a whole new path even from the most walked way. I had not seen Heian Shodan from this perspective before and it's totally intriguing. Going to have to try it in my training. Thanks for sharing. In future videos, please consider reducing background noise using some software tool. 👍🏼👊🏼

En JKA, se suele trabajar mucho así, se llama Kiri Kaeshi, es excelente para mantener el cuerpo bajo y trabajar Kansetsu Waza (técnicas de articulaciones).
