    The freedom and self- sufficiency of bikepacking is really hard to explain to people. It has to be experienced..especially in the "dangerous" temps of the winter. And those porcupines look damn good!

    When ever I go Backpacking, it's typically during the winter. There's literally no people to be seen, no bugs (ticks), and because of no leaves the views are much better. I do have my limits when it comes to the temperature, even with my -5° bag. I am not to sure if I am willing to go out when it's less than 0°

      @@oldshovel I love winter myself, but my body doesn't tolerate the cold quite as well the older I get. I suffered a mild case of frost bite while in the Army, and my fingers and toes are what I have to work harder to keep warm. When I was a kid I rarely got cold during the winter and could stay outside for hours.

    I too love getting out on a Fat bike for a bikepacking trip in winter. Set low expectations for miles, expect that even with huge tires that you can still be shutdown by snow, so be flexible with your route and be willing to backtrack to find a better path. Having miles and miles of road on forest all to yourself, as few are as hardy (or is it fool-hardy?) as you will be.
    Neoprene Nalgene booties greatly reduce water freezing issues. My kit is far from as compact as yours, I need to work on trimming down.

      If pathways are not plowed skinny tires will sink and struggle in deep snow. But yes, skinny studded tires work great on ice or very shallow snow.

    I remember my days in scouts very well, didn't like winter camping so much, partly due to the fact that my winter survival badge was earned in a blizzard here in Newfoundland, and needed to stay in a lean-to, and get a fire going with only one match. Me personally I would have done a hammock and tarp setup only because I really don't like tents and I do have a -25° under quilt from war bonnet and my hammock of choice the daring dream hammock 12 ft x 78 in wide extremely comfortable and to help keep things in check for wind I would use my winter hammock sock I am definitely a snug as a bug in a rug very warm

    • @oldshovel
      @oldshovel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most of my winter camping gear is for mountaineering. Zero degree down sleeping bags, bivi sack, insulated pads and mountaineering tents. For the water bottles I boiled the water I had and kept it in my sleeping bags overnight. It is easier to boil water than melt snow, especially on a one day trip.
