If Marvel continues to use a version of a symbol or a version of a character, they legally have to keep paying royalties to the original creator of that version. The loophole around this is getting another artist to create an adaptation, which then means royalties.
This is actually foreshadowing of sorts. Remember all the different symbols for the different organisations that Hydra used to be? Like the Pathfinder space program thing?
