This is the school he started I assume. ( I still have one of those vests in a closet somewhere from my training there 30 years ago.)

7:03 the difference between modern judo and the original form of judo... Jigoro Kano changed the techniques because he was an idealist, he wanted a more compassionate society...I have always taken issue with the brutality of SPM, its main objective is to kill or maim, however, what happens when your elderly parent with dementia attacks you, or your teenage son with schizophrenia induced psychosis attacks you, are you going to kill and maim them? I would argue NO...therefore every martial art needs compassionate subduing techniques like the ones Jigoro Kano taught.

If your elderly parent or your son with Schizophrenia attacks you, no you don't kill or maim them. Most of us who knows how to do these things also have everyday "Common Sense" to know the difference between a family member with a mental disability and some low life who trying to kill or maim you. If you are train at such level of violence, you also know how to control it as well.If my drunk Uncle walks up me saying he wants to test me,I'm not going to headbutt him and knee him in the balls. If you are an instructor you should already know the answer to the statement you made above. @@MikeS24-v4s Rubbish...maybe you have heard the saying "you fight the way you train" therefore if you are only training to respond to an altercation with severe violence then that is how you will respond any time someone attacks you. Jigoro Kano knew that and that is why his approach was to teach his students to subdue their opponents by bringing them to the ground and subdue them with a joint lock, as this causes the least amount of physical injuries to the assailant. Police officers also know this, that is why their restraining techniques are based on the Jigoro Kano model.
If your interest is in competing for money and pride, like boxers, kickboxers, and the like, then all you have to worry about is training hard to beat down the opponent. If however, your interest is self-defense then you must also train humane subduing methods alongside the brutal traditional techniques.

@@dmxmartialarts There is a "Buddha Hands" perspective to Southern Mantis also. It is not always front and center but it is there.
