I appreciate your honest review. I personally am blown away by this game in 2022 after playing many other fps games and rpg's. The atmosphere of this game is on another level, and I can forgive a lot of the small issues . I'm playing on the PC and the graphics and level of detail in the environments puts many other games to shame. I agree that there are some clunky moments, but for me at least, the game world is just too immersive to let go because of a few annoyances. Good perspective on the game!

It's very subjective. Some people like atmosphere and world-building over everything else, others demand tight controls and solid technical performance while people like me are a pain in the ass and want both

These 8-10h single-player narrative experiences are so rare these days. I played it on PS4 and plan to continue the adventure with Last Light at some point since I own Metro Redux. If my memory serves me well, the game wasn't very fun to play, but the setting and atmosphere were quite unique.
Apparently the Switch ports are really good, so one could play Metro on the metro. I'll see myself out.

My thoughts exactly! I'm of two minds about playing last light. I didn't love how 2033 played but I could be tempted back for more of the world/atmosphere.

Totally agree. I wish there were more relatively briefly length games with replay-ability that was fun to go back for but not UNENDING games that just go on for months and have so much content they become draining. I think the 7th gen was the purest for peak of these type of games and what AAA developers were willing to make.

It can definitely be an acquired taste.
I would describe is as a "Simulation PC Shooter".
Along the lines of *F.E.A.R.* , *Chronicles Of Riddick* , and *"Crysis"*
These types of games are meant to be played on their hardest difficulty, or whichever difficulty is hardest for you.
If you don't make it a challenge, then these sort of games can lose their atmospheric appeal.
It's meant to be a survival game, where danger is around every corner and every bullet counts.
If that isnt the type of game you personally enjoy, then I would recommend passing on it.
Personally, I love these sorts of games, but I'm also a dark souls nut. Haha. So, to each their own.

To be fair, the original 2033 very much does NOT hold up today, which is why this Redux version was so dearly needed. The controls and gunplay in the original are nearly as bad as in Stalker, which really sucks in a more linear-driven narrative shooter.

I think this is a fair review and it gets right to the point. If consoles and gaming services are going to sell the game, then there will be people who want to know if their money is going to be well-spent. This is often how you run across the gems in gaming. I'm playing Metro for the first time and started with Metro 2033 Redux in survival/hardcore mode with the disabled crosshair.
I'm constantly swimming in AR and shotgun ammo. I can't even pick them up because I'm almost always full (yes, I play with the shotgun and AR). It breaks my immersion. I feel like the game is constantly feeding me ammo. I never have to be careful about my ammo consumption.
Not to mention the unpredictable movement of mutants. They jump instantly, and it feels like part of the animation is missing. Also, I can't adjust my ADS sensitivity. I have to aim with a sensitivity that is twice as high as what I'm used to, and it feels unnatural. It also breaks the immersion.
I haven't finished the game (I arrived at Polis station), but the game is still great. It will never be as good as modded Stalker, but the linear level design allows you to disable your brain, let the story carry you, and have a great experience. I'm just disappointed by the too-easy difficulty and the lack of a survival aspect

Of course, there are games that are too difficult for new people. I tried Dying Light on Nightmare Mode &, in reality, that is meant for players who have levelled up their character, not for players who only have a wrench to defend themselves against hordes of zombies.

  • @juanme555
    @juanme555 ปีที่แล้ว +3

This is just a classic game that was launched in a transitionary period of time in which the playerbase went from enthusiast to casual, and now in 2023, its almost entirely casual.
The Redux version of 2033 is awful, graphically it may be impressive for its time purely on technical feats, but the actual aesthetics of the "upgraded" visuals break the design that the original vision was going for.
But most importantly, the gameplay of 2033 got brutally casualized on the Redux, this game was meant to be played on PC, with Russian voices and on Ranger Hardcore difficulty, with a mouse and a keyboard.
The English dub is cringe, it sounds like a cheap marvel cinematic universe + friends crossover, you did not play the real game if thats the only way you played it.
When you play the original game on ranger hardcore, you're not supposed to lose the entire HUD no matter what, is just that the HUD is limited to when you watch your status, so you press tab, look at your watch and then the HUD shows up.....on the Redux version the entire animation got deleted, a lot of animations got deleted in fact, the Redux has less animations than the original game.
Moreover the superior lighting on the Redux version was not properly adjusted for the assets of the original...which they directly imported and that's why you see so many "weird" looking faces, those faces were meant to be shown under an entire different lighting system.
I get it though, if you're playing it on consoles, this is pretty much the only version you can play, specially on 9th gen consoles, even on PC i think the original version got removed from the steam and gog stores which is a great tragedy, but if you already paid for the game, i think its okay if you just pirate it, it's not okay to not be able to play the original version.
TLDR: If you already have a semi-mediocre computer at least by 2023 standards, and you already paid for the game, just find a way to download the original 2010 game and play that on Russian dub with subs and maximum difficulty, play it with mouse and keyboard, calibrate the brightness, and just enjoy the genuinely breathtaking atmostphere of Metro, this is the best game in the trilogy, i have bought and beat them all, (bought the og and reduxes of LL, bought Exodus 2019 but still havent bought the remake for that one).

SO I just got this Metro 2033 Redux, Metro Last Light Redux, Metro Exodus, And the Metro Exodux Pc Enhanced Version (Forced Ray Tracing). I got the whole bundle on Steam for $12.... LOL.....Gotta love it. Anyway my whole point is I bought these games espcially the older ones with the sole intent of playing them on the Steam Deck. I've played some newer games on it but honestly I really enjoyed Bioshock 2 Remastered, Crysis 2 Maximum, etc on it. It's like 2012-2018 especially those early days are really fun on the Deck. Going back too far where controls and gameplay suck isn't good. I've found 2012 is a good place to go back to and play up from. 2014 seems to fit the deck well. I'm looking forward to playing this on it.

Metro 2033 and last light our two of my favorite games but the litany of technical issues, bad dialogue, and annoying gameplay elements hold it back. I absolutely love the story and it does atmosphere better than any other game I've ever played before. If I were king of the world and ordered a remake of the game I would make the following changes:
    Voiced protagonist
    Better voice actors
Fix the dialogue pacing. Sometimes characters will just start to talk over each other and the lines are clearly meant to be said one after the other or there are weird three to five second pauses in between voice lines.
Make the stealth system a little bit more lenient, instead of every enemy within a 500 m radius knowing exactly where you are if you stick your baby toe out of cover for one second.
If I could just boil it down the game feels like it's in permanent late stage beta where it's 2 months away from being released.

Just installed the Metro saga as it was on sale. I must say your review is very fair. I Think this games direction is just masterfull, since it never feels like you are in a corridor and the progression seems very natural, when in fact it is one the most linear games ever made. However I've had some jank and even game breaking bugs involving the night vision, where it would automaticaly deploy it in a turret section, making it unbeatable because it was bright , so I would not be able to take the NVG off and could only see white noise in the turret so I would die reatedly. Its one of my favorite games ever, but its got many flaws. I've actualy played the original on Xbox 360 and it was very good looking for the time but very janky.

If you ran out of ammo a lot on survival normal difficulty you're doing something wrong. If you wanna save ammo don't use a rifle like the bastard on mutants, it's ineffective and wastes ammo, shotguns and revolvers are much better against mutants and use far less ammo

Also it helps a lot to have all of your weapons use different ammo pools, for instance you could have a revolver, a rifle of your choice (The VSV is my favorite, you get it at the black market or you can buy it at the smithy), and the shambler. You could use a tikhar or helsing in place of the revolver but they both kinda suck.
