I, like most, don’t believe advertising, strangers playing switch together would never happen; however(!) I started playing mine on the train one day & the guy sat opposite asked if he could join in, not only did we play mario kart but he was on the return train home & did snipper clips on the way back :)

In my city I knew there was a meet-up group that would meet once a week on the LRT (light rail commuter train) to play DS games together. Don’t know if they’ll have something like that post-pandemic for Switch. :)

I live in Houston, and whenever the hurricane hit my buddy and I got trapped and couldn't make it home. We were watching the Mayweather-McGregor fight, because when the fight started it looked like we were going to avoid most of the storm. We barely were able to make it to a hotel. Luckily, we both had our Switches so we played Pokken (it was just the demo at the time), ARMS, and Mario Kart. It kept us busy while we waited out the storm and kept our minds off of the devastation unfolding outside. I am so thankful for the Switch for times like that. I used to be a huge PS4 fanboy, and now I barely touch it. I will never leave my house without my Switch. It may just be "games" for some people, but for that night the Switch was one of the few comforts my buddy and I had. And we were two of the lucky ones. The next day there was a small window where the water had subsided enough to allow us both to make it home safe and sound, and neither of us got water at our place.
Wow ya were lucky and me like and want to get the switch even more.

Reminds me of the time I got stuck in a blizzard in Minnesota with two friends while we were trying to get back to California. Luckily I brought my Switch. We were stuck in that crap hotel room for 2 days!

No other console comes with a free game. I'm actually happy they didn't do that this year. They needed to break away from it before it became "normal" for Nintendo. But $50 is just too much for a basic tech demo.

actually, for rocket league, you can play locally in table top mode, all you have to do is play with a joy con sideways with the other controller on the switch, then connect the other joy con while the other one is connected. and then you have 2 different players. and that’s it!
ARMS is amazing. Continuous support adding characters, arms, arenas, game modes. Online fun, local multiplayer, and also coop in the main campaign. It is the game I'm playing the most, both online and coop. It has more gaming options that others in this list.

I had most of the games on the list, while arms are great, i had so much fun with pokken. In fact, i spent the most number of hours on this game, because its just so exciting, stress-relieving, and fast paced. the younger kids loved to play with it and even on online, it can be real tough and competitive. and the pvp scene also punishes button smashers, so you really need to learn your opponent to do well. Pokken is too underrated.
Ultra Street Fighter II is a good buy if you're in your late 20's+ for the nostalgia alone. It's cheaper than a full price game and has some nice multiplayer options including tradition 1 v 1 local and online play. You also get the option to toggle between the newer/classic graphics and sound effects separately which is awesome.
Adam do you know much about the street fighter collection coming out next year? I love street fighter, but I'm not sure if I should wait for the collection to get a street fighter game on the switch.
Yeah Ultra II is kind of a rip-off, $50 for a 20+ year old game is rediculous. The new collection looks dope.

ARMS is hype man! I think if the new IP was released a little earlier it could have made more traction before all the (established) big guns started being put out, but still it has a pretty devoted following

I would add Puyo Puyo Tetris to the list and just get rid of 1 2 Switch. The $40 price tag is a bit too high, but I just got it for 25, which is fine for a game that has infinite replayability.

custom colored JoyCon shells, just google it. but I warn you, it's a great pain putting them on and 9 out of 10 times, you break your JoyCon. so the risk is just not worth it... Bob had a whole video about it, here:

Rayman legends is fun with co-op
Hey, rocket league DOES have splitscreen in tabletop mode with split joycons, but there are some caveats, first, you have to rebind your player one controller to a single joycon by hitting L and R, and then you need to hit + or - on your free controller to add it.
It's a bit confusing, and also the UI is crazy small but it's fun and it works

Of quick note... The reason you can LAN connect the consoles for games like Mario Kart is gaming conventions and conventions where gaming is a big part of it. Being able to connect them without needing Internet is an absolute must for those; so until we get properly good wireless connections across platforms without internet... it's here to stay and will totally get used for its purpose of connecting a dozen together.
I used to hang around fighting game fans (who also played Kart, because it is a competitive action racing game... which is a similar adrenaline rush) in a local gaming club and they often brought their consoles to connect with cables despite there being wifi where we were, because less input lag. They get crazy about shit like that.

Arms is amazing and an under rated gem on the switch! Me and my friends are constantly playing it at school in between classes or at each other’s houses I think everyone should get it

If you ask me, ARMS has a lot more to offer than Pokken, I mean, I never knew how to play Pokken (still don't) every time I'm playing, I just mash random buttons and I win hands down every single time, that's proof the game basically sucks, while ARMS remains a fun challenge for anyone, and I'm not talking about the stupid motion controls, screw that. but seriously, it gets free DLC and lots of support and has great online. ARMS is totally worth the $60 with carefully designed game mechanics and a great variety of modes and tools, whilst Pokken is just a stupid game where any average Joe can mash his way into victory. that's what I think.

no dude! I played local co op, with one of my friends who happens to love pokken and he's pretty good at it... I don't know man, maybe it's a freakish coincidence, but out of all 15 matches that the demo had to offer, I won 14! without even knowing what button does what, I didn't even fully understand the whole support pokemon system... but hey... some people just dig it. I think the only thing that made pokken kinda successful was the Pokemon franchise. other than that, nothing special.
well if any player could just pick it up and beat pros the game wouldn't have any sort of competitive scene. your friend can play pokken a lot, but if he never tries to learn the game, he wont get any better. Not to say that that's a bad thing, in fact it's good for including casual players. The game is easy to pick up but hard to master, which makes it a great game for playing with friends who maybe aren't familiar with pokken or tekken.
I just don't believe that a game that has me (someone with no experience, and no idea how the game works, spamming buttons on a controller) win against someone that actually plays the game and knows what's going on, is a well crafted game. I might sound stubborn, but I'm not the only one saying this... consider ARMS or Smash Bros. which are both great for casual and hardcore gamers, now take a look at Pokken...

Stevie Rios The only thing I have to say to this is, it’s an excellent game even though the graphics are bad. I did not buy a switch to play doom in 4K with max settings at 60 FPS. I have a pc that can do just that perfectly fine. But I didn’t buy doom on my pc I bought it on my switch, not for power, but for portability.
Mitchell Graves it’s a better singe player game than multiplayer, although I’ve heard it’s decent.

Guardian Gaming Arms is just one of those games that just had to click with you. I thought it was just okay until I kept getting destroyed by ninjara on level 3-4 difficulty. I didn't get how I could keep losing then something clicked. I didn't realize the depth of strategy in the game. That made me want to learn how to play it properly. I've loved the game ever since.
I fucking hate it. I try to turn it on to get my money’s worth and always have to turn it right off. I respect that everyone is different, though.
FIFA is fun. As long if you don't use a single joycon.

Pokken all the way. Not even close. Check out some Pokken tournaments on TH-cam or Twitch to see what I mean. Top tier Pokken play is fantastic to watch.

They're both great games. ARMS is a game that isn't meant for everyone that I can say for sure considering fighting games always have a learning curve. If you play recklessly and spam punches it won't be fun. Pokken too but that game is a lot more complex than ARMS imo.

At this point, Rocket League is, by an order of magnitude, the best multiplayer game on Switch. It's online done right, with many many options, loads of customization, and is an insanely fun game. It blows Mario Kart out of the water, and Splatoon 2's anoying unskipable cut scenes, clunky hub world, terrible online options for playing with friends, and just plain terrible online infrastructure all together, holds it back from the top spot for me.

I have been playing RL for a couple years and yes its amazing. I was bummed though that handheld mode sucks cuz its so hard to look downfield. Also its sucks with the joy cons. U need the procontroller for it which isnt the case for something like MKart
Jim May I think handheld mode is just fine. It does the trick. The resolution is a bit shit at times, but I can still play fairly competively. Supposedly, they are currently working on bumping up the resolution and improving the performance for Switch. I heard it was an issue with Unreal engine on the Switch that needs to be worked out. Every Unreal port has had weak performance thus far, while many more graphically intensive games, than something like RL, have had much better performance. I beleive theae kinks will get worked out, and the Switch version will be closer to the other platforms, visually, before too long.
The only reason I would suggest Mario Kart over Rocket League is if you plan on playing with family, or people who don't play games very often. Rocket League takes some extra motor skills to play that we might be used to after years of playing 3rd person games. The barrier of entry is a tad bit higher. Mario Kart can be a lot more mindless fun.
I feel like I'm in the minority when it comes to arms. I'm the only one of my friends who like it and most people online say that its dead, forgotten, or over priced.
I love ARMS and haven't had too much trouble finding Ranked matches or Party matches.

I bought ARMS on launch and hated it. Then I played it with the pro controller and the game suddenly clicked. It's really, really good, and IMO way better than Pokken, wich is fucked up because Pokken should be amazing. It's a fucking POKEMON FIGHTING GAME, how could they make it bad?!

Darkfire293 ever since notch sold it to Microsoft it was going down hill ever since. Minecraft reached its peak in 2015 especially on TH-cam. Now no one plays it but kids who are just now finding out about it.

Overcooked 2 is going to have multiplayer online and I believe it comes out this month for 25 or 26 dollars definitely getting it if you preorder it you get more characters
