I believe that this update might be for prevention. If your unit has battery drain issue, I believe damage is already done and no software change will fully fix it.
I just got a replacement too (only the earbuds not the case). So far, the issue seems to be fixed with this pair with 1.6.1. That totally unrespectful from Sony to have this kind of issue and not recall the faulty unit and replace it without asking... I was stuck with this problem for months. Thanks for the video BTW.
I bought my buds in Australia about 18 months ago and I've noticed even greater problems since the firmware update. My right bud drops to less than 50% in less than 10 minutes, while the left bud still has 97%. Then the whole thing shuts off and needs to be recharged. The firmware update clearly doesn't fix the problem. I'm currently in NZ so getting new buds from Australia is going to be a pain. Very disappointed as these are good buds and my WI1000xm2s (?) still work absolutely fine after about 4 years of high use.
Update. I sent the buds through to Sony NZ in Auckland and within a week the original case was returned with replacement buds. I updated the buds to the new firmware and they are truly excellent and it is great now I can fully enjoy them again. Well done Sony! Thinking repair could take ages, I purchased a brand new linkbud S and am very happy with those too because they are very comfortable for long use and also doing sports because they are smaller and lighter than the XM4s. The multipoint pairing works really well on both devices.
Hi Simon, I live in Auckland and I’m happy to see your comment. I have my left earbud drains so fast. Are you able to help me advise how I can request for replacement? We purchased the xm4 last January 2022 via Noelleeming store. Hopefully this will be replaced as its not our fault 😢😢
I'm just glad I got my replacement from Sony regardless of the update. It took nearly two months for me to get it but it's so nice starting with fresh headphones. Did anyone else get the work around from Sony during the return process, the communication and information requirement was such a pain, worse customer service I've ever had.
Hey Aaron, I had same issue with left bud. 16 months after purchase date. Went to Sony´s repair center in Mexico City and they replaced both earbuds for new ones (model b). No cost for me. Excellent service from SONY Mexico.
Mine was sent to the Sony service center for repair due to battery drain. It has been almost a month now that I haven't received it back yet. I was told to wait till the middle of this month for repairs. It's such a long-time wait for a product that is still under warranty.
My left bud continued to have extremely low battery capacity after upgrading to v2, so I assume something permanent has gone wrong with the bud. It would last for minutes when it should have lasted for hours.
Hi! I was waiting for you to upload a content about this firmware update! I also updated to 1.4.2 before and experienced one piece dying quickly, unfortunately this firmware did not resolved the issue. I had to send the unit back to the service center. According to the forums, the issue in 1.4.2 fried your capacitor, damaging the hardware and the only solution is to have it replaced.
I brought my unit to Sony service center in The Curve Malaysia. They took my unit in, told me it will be repaired in 2 weeks. After 8 days I receive a text to say it's ready. I went to collect and they replaced both left and right earbuds for FREE and I haven't experience any battery problem since. SONY Malaysia, you're the best.
Tks for your video. Went to service center. Sony replaced mine free. Though out of warranty. Firmware now on 1.6.1. Guys, just go service center and try. I tried resetting etc but still Batt drain.
After seeing your first video about the battery issue I sent them for repairs and they got back without any noticeable improvement (not to Sony, I had to contact the dutch website where I bought the earphones); the second time I linked in the repair form your video asking explicitly for a replacement (which according to the reparation status is not gonna happen); let's hope this time they'll actually do something. In the worst case in EU the warranty lasts 2 years, and I'll have a few months to torment them 😄
I also experienced battery loss on my buds. Specifically on the Right side. I was on 1.4.2, I received an update on the 5th of December which is version 1.6.0 but that didn't fix the issue at hand and made it worse even tho the change logs says that it'll fix the battery issue. So I took matters to my hands and took the buds to a certified Sony service centre. Got my buds battery changed within two days and thankfully they did it for free even tho I was out of warranty. Mines are working fine now with the up-to-date 1.6.1 version. My conclusion is that the bug itself permanently ruined the battery life and I don't think an update could fix it sadly :( . I advise anyone with the issue to go and have your batteries changed
Hey man, i've also has the same device as yours and im out of my warranty 1.May i know which region are you from ? 2.How do you exactly explain your problem at Sony Center so you didn't have to pay, even tho you're out of warranty ? I want to copy your exact explanation Please help me, thanks before !
@@cenningitis2910 1. Malaysia 2. I called my nearest sony service centre and asked them if they could fix the battery drain issue to which they said yes. Sent them in and after it's done being repaired I asked for the charge fee to which they explained to me that it's totally free of charge.
How many hours do you use it daily? I think that's the most important factor. To me I used to use it daily with at least+10 hours and it started to be like that after about 8 months. Most people usually face it after a year of moderate use. I think yours is light and that could be the reason
Updating to 1.6.1 doesnt resolve the issue for me, as of right now after about 2 hours of listening with anc on, my left earbud left with 45% while my right one left with only 7%😢
Have you found a way to fix it? I have thr same issue my left battery is always higher than my right one. I just updated to 2.0.1 and my earbuds went from 100 to left60% and right 30% in 5 mins
mine was cause by software either, i never charge via wall charger, normally use PC usb C cable slow charging or just use my PC casing's wireless charger pad on top. only two time i see my xm4 with overheat warning for some reason during charging. my story of claiming warranty with xm4 is sony center MY will not give you replacement but they will fix for free under warranty.
I very certain my XM4 warranty has expired by a few months, but Sony happily replaced it for me. Sony service center rep did confirm HQ is aware of the problem and is replacing any XM4 that has battery drain issue. They said a specific lot of batteries will see this issue after the firmware update. The replaced XM4 (earbuds only) will have an additional 90 days warranty. Recommend everyone effected to go a Sony service center and get their XM4 replaced. Good luck!
I only realized my left earbuds battery life had gone last week. I rarely use the left earbud and just happened to use it recently and it lost power in 15-min. The good news is, apparently, Sony now has an exchange program for these and is exchanging mine for a new one. My left earbuds battery life remained to be grossly short even after an update to v2.0.
I've been using XM4 for about year and a half, and my right earbuds battery will go from 90% to 0% within 30 mins, plus I could never fully recharge the XM4 for quite a while. It's a shame that the XM4 has such issue since they are such a good pair of earbuds. Let's see if the update could help this a little bit.
@@pitcheung5354 i did, they said it's not a local unit, but if it's a Sony issue, what does it matter? I bought from a local shop on shopee and how do I know if it's a local unit or not?
Just updated to 1.6.1 and this made the batteries drain even faster. Been a loyal Sony customer for over 30 years ( Projecters- TVs - Headphones …..) but this is unacceptable. I guess I will be looking for other products from other Manufacturers from now on.
I received a free replacement even after the warranty period. First I had a battery issue with my left unit, afterwards it did not want to charge or connect anymore. Felt a bit salty that it happened to the premium headset of Sony, but good that they gave me a new one within a week.
the warranty 1 or 2 years? mine just past the warranty and left earbud draining really fast and gets hot. I believe this is a hardware issue and not a firmware issue anymore.
What do you think is it worth using ACC+Dsee extrem or Ldac ? ACC+Dsee extrem : gives you more battery but lower audio quality Ldac : gives you less battery but high quality
You can enable the developer mode to check your AAC settings. Mine oneplus 8pro can only run 44.1khz/16bit which has a big gap with Apple's AAC. Also within AAC the sound is narrower and tighter significantly compared to LDAC with my phone. If your phone can perform 96khz/24bit, then you can try AAC+DSEE (But it looks like most android phones cannot reach this high, only Apple can), otherwise, LDAC without DSEE will be much better than AAC+DSEE. You can imagine you have a 2K monitor, then the LDAC just scales your 4k RAW images into 2k JPGs, and the apple AAC + DSEE should be like scale the image into 1080p then use the plugin to scale up from 1080p to 2k (Like what DLSS did), but android's AAC + DSEE should be like scale the image into 720p then use the plugin to scale up to 2k. There are so many differences here. Personally, I suggest using LDAC with ANC off if you want to enjoy music in a quiet place and you can still reach 6 to 7 hours of playing time. And whenever you have the trip then simply use AAC ONLY (no DSEE) with ANC on to reduce the noise and you can have 8 to 10 hours of playing time. The noises will be more noticeable compared to the sacrifices of the sound quality in this case.
I love in Europe and my WF-1000XM4 still had the 1.4.2 firmware. I updated them yesterday with the MDR Proxy from MrWalkman (found it here in the commands) and for me the sound quality has been improven. Better Bass and clearer mid range
I solved the battery drain on the wf1000xm4 headphones, if the batteries are changed with batteries bought from ALIEXPRES, the Zenipower z55h will last more than 8 hours and without changing the 1.4.2 software, the battery drain is not because of the software but because of the batteries that it discharges too quickly, I put in new batteries and the headphones work perfectly as if they were new, it is possible that there are combined causes between the software and the reliability of the batteries, for now the headphones with new batteries behave very well\~
My left earbud went from 100% to 0% completely dead in exactly 30 minutes of use today while I was at the gym. Had to spend half my workout with only one earbud playing music until the right one ended up dying as well. Not sure if the update did anything for me otherwise I would imagine I would have had more battery life but I’m definitely one disappointed sony customer right now 🙄
@@h_rv_nc_ that's what I thought. Bought mine June 2021. I just went through the replacement call with Soney and it's on the way. Even though it's out of warranty. Give it a try
My buds were bought in December 2021 and neither updating the firmware nor initializing made any difference. The RHS bud still drained way faster than the LHS bud.
Turn off DSSE Extreme it may help, I’ve tried it.. I have Sony WF1000XM4 and the battery of right earbud is draining so fast.. It's only 15-20 minutes and auto power off. After that, I tried to turn off DSSE Extreme, and turn on the right earbud again, and now no issue with the right earbud, but the battery indicator is below 10%.
Hi there. I am a user from South Korea. I had both the case and the unit replaced for free by the service center a month ago. In Korea, there is a derogatory term for Sony called "Sony Timer". It means that Sony's products only last for one year. It means that after one year of use, the machine will have problems. Anyway, the Sony branch in Korea will replace the battery for free if it drains. After it became an issue in the US and Europe, Sony's headquarters in Japan announced a free replacement. People with battery drain issues should go to their local Sony service center and get a free replacement!!! For reference, I updated the firmware to version 1.6.1. No problems yet. In fact, I think this is an inherent equipment defect. 🙄🙄😒
I have a pair of 1000XM4 in VietNam (original ver 1.3.3). I got the battery issue with the left one. (update to 1.4.2) although its warranty is 2 months passed over, but I've still received free replacement for a new pair with version 1.5.0 from Sony. Luckily, now I feel better.
@@datngo8892 are you starting to attack me now? Well are you blind or just cannot read? Well I guess you are just a monkey living in a third world country.
I already give up with my xm4. It was a good 9 month something. But unfortunately this problem has created a wound deep inside me tht will leave a scar. I already moved on with tws and now im looking forward for my wired iem adventure. Starting off with the moondrop variations.
Honestly, I'm happy with this improvement, I appreciate it. But not satisfied, moreover this is my favorite TWS. I'm really looking forward to this breakthrough development for TWS. What do you think Aaron? By the way, I use a normal charger to charge the TWS battery this.
Its not just battery drain out faster on the right side , also its cannot fully charge the right side too. I still got 2 weeks from 1year warranty, I think I will turn it into the service centre.
Mine have this problem and replace new buds only(case is fine so nothing change - i stop charging them at the first time) the replacement are still at V1.4.2 but no issue for 2 mouths i think i will upgrade it to 1.6.1😌
@@hpwrotethis were you able to replace one of your earbud? If yes then that may be the cause, my left is firmware 1.4.2, while right is 1.5.0, so it is not being updated.
Just ordered a pair of these now I’m down this rabbit hole with the battery issue. If my headphones arrive with 1.4.2 should I just say the battery life sucks and return them?
Today got mine from US store. And the US region ones has no manufacturing date on the cardboard as the Asia version will have that. And the first pair runs with 1.4.2, with SN 7327xxx. I can see the battery drain unevenly for the left side and right side within half an hour. So I changed to a new one, with SN 7725xxx, and it runs 1.5.0. The US region does not ship the 1.6.1 firmware yet, so I use the MrWalkman MDR Proxy tool to upgrade to 1.6.1. Currently, I keep running with 75%volume/LDAC/ANC ON/Wind Reduction OFF/Speak-to-Chat OFF/EQ ON/DSEE OFF, and already run for 2 hours 40 mins, battery is 50%-48%, which perfectly matches the official announcement that LDAC/ANC ON/DSEE OFF for 5 hours. Additionally, for whom care about the invisible manufacturing date like the US region ones, here are some reference SN numbers with manufacturing dates: 7580xxx Jul 06 2022 (based on Reddit, Jul batch should already run 1.5.0) 7922xxx Sep 24 2022 And mine 7725xxx would be in between the two dates, like Aug 2022. So you can consider the SN number greater than 7580xxx would be no issue with the battery drain problem.
Right bud last 5 hours 20 mins and Left bud last 5 hours 40 mins with 75%volume/LDAC/ANC ON/Wind Reduction OFF/Speak-to-Chat OFF/EQ ON/DSEE OFF/Adaptive OFF, longer than announced 5 hours battery life. Will do the AAC test tomorrow.
With the same configuration of 75%volume/AAC/ANC ON/Wind Reduction OFF/Speak-to-Chat OFF/EQ ON/DSEE OFF/Adaptive OFF (The only difference is use AAC instead of LDAC) and get Right bud 9 hours 2 mins, Left bud 9 hours 50 mins battery life. Which is great. Additionally, my Android phone (oneplus 8 Pro) can only achieve 44.1khz/16bit rates which is not reaches the highest standard of AAC of 96khz/24bit rates, so it might have longer battery life compared to the announcement 8 hours life (probably connect to IPhone will have 8ish hours battery life). And, even if I set ANC on, but the test is taken in a quiet room, I think in an actual noisy environment the battery life will be shorter most likely will be reduced from 8 hours to 5/6 hours. For this time, when the right side is out of battery the left side still has 20% battery. Then I force the laptop fan to run at full speed to produce the noises and put the left bud near the laptop, the left bud last 30 mins from 10% to 0. My laptop is located on the right side so I think the right side took more battery and resources to execute the ANC is the main reason that the two buds have a bigger gap compared to using LDAC. Also, another factor that we need to notice, is to set the "Priority on" with "Sound Quality" then force using AAC by Android Development Options or set it to "Stable Connection" to force using AAC will have the same configurations of 44.1khz/16bit which is limited by the phone but not the earbuds. I assume the "Priority on" setting logic just as, if set to "Sound Quality", then will try to use LDAC without rate limit; but if the device does not support LDAC, or set "Priority On" into "Stable Connection", then it will fall to AAC without rate limit.
I have the same problem with the left earbud dying in less than an hour. I contacted Sony and they emailed me a label and I sent my buds in and they are sending me a replacement it says it’s a brand new WF1000XM4/B. I’m not sure what the /B is but I’m assuming it’s a new version that doesn’t have this issue Well idk how this update will affect the B version
I'm fairly certain I've noticed something different between my old unit (1.4.2) and replacement (1.5) that may be something for you to test in the future: sound quality while in a noisy environment vs quiet. With the new unit, while connected to my S22 ultra (not sure if that matters) I have my volume typically at 30% or less in a quiet environment. In a noisy environment where anc seems to be working well, I have to set my volume closer to 70% to get close to what seems to be the same volume. It could be my mind playing tricks because of background noise but I'm skeptical. I'm thinking the power consumption of ANC directly influences the sound volume. Anyway, since you have the tools to objectively check it out, I think it'd be interesting to see the results.
I sent my old unit because of this 1.4.2 problem, and got a new pair no question asked (great after-sale service, Sony Indonesia). My new unit is now on 1.5.0 version, and they are working fine now. Battery life, performance, and sound quality just as good as the old unit when I first got them. Last night I noticed that there was a new firmware update. But, no. As long as they work great, there is no need to update. Just nope😆😆
Makanya kita menunggu pengalaman Sdr. Andar bagaimana.
I did every software update to mine, and it still lasted less than an hour. I got fed up went online and researched what type of batteries the earbuds use. I ordered two for about 30 bucks. Then I took it to the local phone repair store , convinced the Indian guy to change them. He took less than 45 mins to do it. Now it been several months and I am still getting 8 ,9 hrs of play time out of them. Better than when I first purchased. I am happy 😂
@@h.gurung4052 Luis Rossman has a video about that issue, some of the earbuds use slightly lower voltage and capacity, while others are produced with slightly better. At some point, someone decides to push firmware where the lower voltage batteries are forced to charge at higher voltage, degrading the battery. There are also guide videos on how to change the battery.
I just replaced my first headset due to the right bud battery draining to quickly, now the new unit the right bud is doing exactly the same thing left unit is at 90% right is dead ,this only happens if I don't put then back in the case after use
I still have my faulty ones, because even when I explained that their battery lasted 20 mins their only offer was money off a repair... even when the person I spoke with admitted it was a faulty unit and that they were investigating it internally. I ended up declining their offer, I'm gonna wait and see if they issue a recall when they officially acknowledge it. If they do, great! But if not I'm gonna be steering clear of sony's earbuds for the time being
I started getting this issue about a month or two ago except it's my left earbud. The left earbud lasts about 45 minutes before dying while the right still has 50-60% battery left. Pretty disappointing.
I sent my WF1000XM4 to the center, unfortunately they didn't accept it due to i don't have the receipt (purchased order) any way i can do change. Please advice me 🙏
The update unavailable in EU and USA and even if it was as you said only 30% saw any improvement so far I feel like as a costumer that Sony doesn't care about it enough and I don't see anytime soon how they gonna fix it so after it im pretty much done with Sony. So do you have any other earbuds recommendations for me?

uninstall the headphone apps from sony, the apps keep sending wrong information. I have tested this theory before, and I hope this will resolve your problem.
No firmware version can recover from battery drain issue. I have downgraded from 1.4.2 to 1.3 still the same. It is a hardware issue. I have sent my unit to Sony MY. Right side only lasted for about 40min while left is around 1 hour. Does not matter what codec I'm using. Sent the buds with 1.4.2 firmware. Called them after a week and they mentioned they will fix it. When I'm collected the buds, both was replaced. My old unit have some marks on it, so I now that I'm getting a new one. Firmware is 1.5 and updated to 1.6.1 straight away when I'm connected back to my phone.
Hey Aaron, it would be interesting to know if you have the assistant active during the battery tests, since that could cause the right earbud to drain faster than the left one.
Please I will like to replace a faulty unit that makes my speech bounce back into the my ear when Sony xf1000xm4 is plugged into my ear , can you share the guide of how you got yours replaced ?
Hi just a month a go my units battery got wierd the right one drains really fast like within 10 min. And it doesn't charge fully till 100% just until 70%. I don't know what happened
I bought mine end of june and updated them the day I got them and used them only sporadically. (Can’t remember what firmware) Will I be relatively safe from battery issues since I cant really tell due to low use time
Wow that reset worked with opening and closing the box with the buds. Somehow my battery life jumped up to 73 on left side and 93 on right side. I think it wasn't charging correctly either
Update, tried all the resets and steps. Didn't work. I called Sony, and they will replace my current earpods for free too. The replacement unit you speak of. So I guess I'll figure out how the performance works too 🤣😅.
I bought it 11 months ago, version 1.4.2, battery lasts forever, I have never even got close to 50% battery, sometimes I listen to over 2 hours of music.
Don't bother with the firmware update turn off all settings in the app and keep noise canceling and your battery should magically last longer as it should. It's the app itself sending signals that are unnecessary and drain the battery.
My Sony WF-1000XM4 battery will only last 15 mins from fully charged to completely drained flat. It wont even last until the end of the new firmware update. How to fix?
Hi, I got my Sony WF-1000XM4 replaced with a new one with firmware V.1.5.0 and I want to update it to v. 1.6.1 via MDR Proxy Tool I have 2 questions: 1- Is there a file for V. 1.5.0 to download if anything goes wrong with the update? because I couldn't find it anyware. 2- What if I used this tool for the update, can I still receive future official updates from Sony through their app?
My wf xm4's are on 1.4.2 and I don't see any way to update? What am I missing? The app just says version is 1.4.2 and only option is to click OK . Shouldn't the app automatically find this update (and why did it never find 1.5?).
I have a weird problem, my right earbud got replaced because it had a buzzing noise (I expected both buds to replaced though, sadly not). Now my buds have firmware mismatch, left is on 1.4.2 while right is on 1.5.0, and the 1.6.1 update is not being pushed, it will only start if I use my left bud alone but will get stuck at 51%. Any solutions for this?
Mine got really bad battery life after 1.6.2, used to be 5hours with ANC, LDAC and DSEE, not it's just 10minutes. Sent the headphones to SONY service center for diagnostics, the agent said it would take 2 to 3 weeks and they'll probably replace the whole thing.

Hey man, i've also has the same device as yours and im out of my warranty
1.May i know which region are you from ?
2.How do you exactly explain your problem at Sony Center so you didn't have to pay, even tho you're out of warranty ? I want to copy your exact explanation

2. I called my nearest sony service centre and asked them if they could fix the battery drain issue to which they said yes. Sent them in and after it's done being repaired I asked for the charge fee to which they explained to me that it's totally free of charge.
My conclusion is that since it's a wide known issue. They should fix it for free no questions asked 😊

I bought wf xm4 At the time of its launch, and since that time until now, I have not had any problems with the battery, and I am happy with that
How many hours do you use it daily?
I think that's the most important factor.
To me I used to use it daily with at least+10 hours and it started to be like that after about 8 months. Most people usually face it after a year of moderate use. I think yours is light and that could be the reason
Updating to 1.6.1 doesnt resolve the issue for me, as of right now after about 2 hours of listening with anc on, my left earbud left with 45% while my right one left with only 7%😢
that is great mine goes from 100% to 10% in one song

Let me know how I can get a free replacement I have the same issue

I've been using XM4 for about year and a half, and my right earbuds battery will go from 90% to 0% within 30 mins, plus I could never fully recharge the XM4 for quite a while. It's a shame that the XM4 has such issue since they are such a good pair of earbuds. Let's see if the update could help this a little bit.

For real. I even reached out to them and wouldn't replace mine. I'm thinking sennheiser for my next tws anc to replace the Sony duds
Where do you live?
I received a free replacement even after the warranty period. First I had a battery issue with my left unit, afterwards it did not want to charge or connect anymore. Felt a bit salty that it happened to the premium headset of Sony, but good that they gave me a new one within a week.
the warranty 1 or 2 years? mine just past the warranty and left earbud draining really fast and gets hot. I believe this is a hardware issue and not a firmware issue anymore.
Is it safe to say that this is the best time to buy the WF-1000XM4 since Sony has fixed its issues since the release?
Good boy thank you for the upload bro
No prob
What do you think is it worth using ACC+Dsee extrem or Ldac ?
ACC+Dsee extrem : gives you more battery but lower audio quality
Ldac : gives you less battery but high quality
Do you have to keep using the modified APK?
Did you have issues with the battery life prior to this and did this solve it?
Thanks
(update to 1.4.2)

Additionally, for whom care about the invisible manufacturing date like the US region ones, here are some reference SN numbers with manufacturing dates:
7580xxx Jul 06 2022 (based on Reddit, Jul batch should already run 1.5.0)
7922xxx Sep 24 2022
And mine 7725xxx would be in between the two dates, like Aug 2022.
Hey i am from Denmark, and i didn't got the update yet.

Go to the XM4's bluetooth settings, there is an option that says match with phone volume, turn that on.
@@orchestertan123 thx, on Android, don't have that setting
