Massey Ferguson 230 Steering Fix

  • In this video we're working on a fellow firefighters 1980 Massey Ferguson 230 farm tractor. This one needed some attention to the power steering, fuel system, and wiring. As it turned out, the power steering system was low on fluid even though the reservoir initially looked as if it had plenty. There was a diesel fuel leak where 2 return lines joined and went back into the fuel tank. The key switch also did not work, and after some wire tracing and a little checking with a multi-meter those issues got resolved too.
    Welcome to the American Tradesmen Channel! First of all, we appreciate you taking your time to check out our content. We put a lot of thought into our channel before we ever made a single video. You're not going to hear profanity on our channel. What you will hear is a little humor and a little how-to. There's literally no telling what we'll be doing, we dabble in a little of everything. We can guarantee you will see plenty of tractors, bulldozers, excavators, trucks, diesel stuff, welding, and repair videos. There's a wide array of equipment showcased, anything from John Deere, International, Farmall, Ford, Komatsu, and the list goes on. Andy drives a Dodge 12 valve Cummins diesel, Matt is currently in a big block Chevy (but that will probably change). If this seems like stuff you're interested in, check us out! Funny how filling the steering reservoir fixes it so easy 🤣😂

      Gosselin Farms Ed Gosselin here’s the crazy part...when I first checked the reservoir you could see fluid, it was down about an inch. I added fluid while it wasn’t running and no change. Then I read the actual procedure, filled while running and all of a sudden it picked up and started working.

      @@AmericanTradesmen LOL..
      I've worked on a 135 a few times... Same pump, different setup. Last time I worked on it, all hell had broke loose!!
      Oil blew out the steering column, the rack block broke out the wear plate and top cover...
      After getting it done, we had a couple of leaks, but it was working!!
      The leaks were because the cylinder rod got messed up, it was leaking into the gearbox. Eventually, I didn't have time to work on it, plus the head gasket had blown (running the grain vac is too much for the little ones😪)
      The dealer got to fix it... And some other things... Took them all the summer of 2018, they'd bring it back, we'd send it back in....
      Finally, the decision was made, it had to be a bad pump... Three new pumps later, it works as it should.
      A good share of the time was waiting for new pumps, seems there are no OEM, only aftermarket. And they just don't bother to make sure they work...
      The one that's on it now, came from a different supplier.. they actually test them before shipping!!!

      Is there a certain type of power steering fluid or hydraulic or transmission fluid what type can you put in that I know that sounds kind of crazy it should be power steering fluid but when I check mine mine had read and it worked fine and would like to put whatever it was in back in

    • @GosselinFarmsEdGosselin
      @GosselinFarmsEdGosselin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scottyboy7804 Massey used their own hydraulic/transmission fluid. I don't recall what they called it. But it's basically the same as the old Chevy power steering fluid/Automatic transmission fluid.. (not Ford, as it doesn't like things besides Ford)
      We use Hy-Tran, Case-IH transmission/hydraulic fluid in almost everything..

    Steering cylinder rod seals leak on mine,have to refill resavoir every time I use it,the best way to fill the resavoir I have found is fill until it runs out,screw plug back in,turn fully left to right,center the wheel back up,then refill again,mine is always low until I figured this out,it always holds more then it is actually full!

    My 230 is doing the same thing as for the steering. What type if fluid did you use to fill it back up?

  • @stephenhiggins8744
    @stephenhiggins8744 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My steering box where the steering wheel shaft enters, was full of water. it steers by raising up or down and the control arms move in opposite directions. for some reason, which I'm still not sure, it won't turn left. i haven't taken it full apart yet, there's been a few things I need to finish before I can get back to it. but when I do, it would be nice to have a clue, where to start.

    Hi got a 175. Mass Ferguson what type of fluid it takes it power steering or hydraulic

    • @AmericanTradesmen
      @AmericanTradesmen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Being that I have yet to work on a 175 I did a little research before responding. It appears that with age the power steering pump front seal will begin to leak into the timing case on the engine. Front what I understand these particular pumps are very forgiving as to what fluid you can run in them. With that said many suggestions online were to use engine oil for power steering fluid so if your pumps front seal is in fact leaking you won’t be introducing power steering fluid into your engines crankcase.

      That's about what I normally do! However in this case the wiring hadn't been touched under the dash. It was all still factory and in good shape (other than those fuse holders!)

      big D fan I haven’t torn down a MF yet so I wouldn’t want to give you any misinformation. I know that Ferguson and Ford hydraulics are very similar and for good reason so that was what I based my question and suggestions on. If I run across a possible solution I will definitely pass it on.
