Man, that was an excellent idea to put the ziplock bag on the end of the lines and get all that old fluid out! I snapped off 1 of the fittings that goes into the left power steering cylinder on my 231 the other day while going through some brush. It’s about the 4th time I’ve done this! Easy fix though. Lost all the fluid, but was able to get it back on the trailer before I could no longer steer it.
Thank you for your comment. Even with you fluid you can still steer the tractor, just mechanical. I drove mine like that for a year. Now that I have the power steering working it feels so much better.
i have a MF240 and have been searching everywhere for videos on maintenance and operation tips... Your tractor seems similar enough. LOL Great videos, Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for this video. I have a 245 that I need to do the same with. I was looking for a video to show me a step by step of the process. And I found it here.
I'd be careful steering with that 1 finger. If it decides to suddenly lock up, you could break a finger. Great video. I think I am fixing to have to remove my uncle's power steering pump and check it out. His power steering quit working on his mf253.
Agree, I just drove with one finder to show how easy it is once power steering is working. Good luck with the MF253 and thank you for checking this video.
Nice 231. Good video, Thanks. I run the engine when adding power steering fluid to my 245 , then cycling the steering back and forth to circulate the fluid through the system. Just changed the pump on mine today, and will replace the ram seals tomorrow.
Thank you. My next video will be the overhaul of the power steering control valve which it is leaking badly. Hopefully that get me power steering again.
@@BUTTEWORKSwould you notify me when you get video up on this please? I have to do the same thing on my MF240. I really enjoyed your video, I rebuilt my steering cylinders a while back, but still didn't have very good power steering, so I assume the filter is clogged. I have a leak somewhere where on the steering wheel shaft that constantly keeps the steering wheel shaft housing wet with fluid. I assume this is what you're going to be working on in the next video. It's been five months since you did this video, so you may already have made the video. I just subscribed also. Take care.
I installed two pumps on two different 231's at the dealer pump is not available had to order a china knock off from one of them after market tractor companies both pumps worked well so far
There were 3 different power steering pumps used on the MF 231 during its production years, from 1989-1999. Mine is a 1998 model and my pump has been re-sealed once. It has around 1,600 hours on it. I’ve had it for 17 years and it’s been a damn good tractor! Had to have head gasket replaced once and that was about 4 years ago.
Glad it helped. Just so you know my pump uses the filter with no spring since the spring is built in the cover, unlike other pumps where the spring is built in on the filter. So buy the filter after you open it up to buy the right one.
Remember when filling up pump make sure to top the pump off with the tractor running if not pump will cavitate and not steer correctly at least on one I did
Yes, I did that, thank you. Unfortunately I have another leak in the power steering control valve under the dash board. Video overhauling the valve soon. Hopefully that keep the power steering system leaks free.
I just wanted to let you know that your videos are fantastic! Excellent step by step process. I used this to rebuild both hydraulic cylinders on our MF-231. I now need to replace the oil filter and O-ring on the reservoir, I could see the filter number on your video but not sure of the viton O-ring size, any help with this be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Thank you for your comment, I really appreciate that. I don't know the diameter of the o-ring but this weekend I need to check the oil level so I'll check it out.
Do you know anything about the steering gearbox under the steering wheel? How do you change the oil? What kind of lube goes in it? How much does it hold?
In my last video, painting the MF i change the oil under the steering column, is that the one you mean?. It is called I believe steering box. I may be wrong.
@@BUTTEWORKSyes that’s it! Thanks! I found my owner’s manual and it states to use Permatran 3 fluid, which is basically a hydraulic/transmission/differential fluid. It takes .95 U.S. quarts (almost a quart of fluid).
Good video. What is the power steering serial number? I have the style but can not find one that matches it exactly. A series number would help me find what I need. Thabks
Hi, my pump didn't have any serial number and to be hones, it was quite different to the many I could find in internet. Specially the connection. None of the ones I saw online would fit the metal pipes that go into the pump. The would have modified or using adapters to make the angles match.
I have a 231s and the steering is hard to the right. What causes that. We have a bucket on ours and we replaced the selector valve and it still leaks. I can get the air out of the lines.
I don't know what could cause that. In my ignorance I would overhaul the power steering control valve and would take a look to the linkage and gears under the steering column.
did you remove the spring attached to the filter? Everywhere we look the filter replacement has a spring attached and a smaller opening on the other side.
I don't know. I actually don't know if the steering column reservoir and the steering pump reservoir are int he same circuit. I will overhaul the power steering control valve soon so I will find out.
@@BUTTEWORKS that is a really good point.....they might not be drawing from the same pool of liquid based altho from some of my troubleshooting efforts, it acted as if the 2 reservoirs do share. i say this b/c i once had the tractor started w/ the steering reservoir's plug removed. each time i turned the wheel, some liquid would get pushed out of it but its level at the steering column wouldn't go down. i was missing a large qty from the pump reservoir after that experiment.
The o-ring was the original one, it was in good shape so I reused it. Measure the diameter in mm and check in Amazon. I can see 90mm 100mm 120mm and it should be one of these.
@@BUTTEWORKS Ok, thanks for the info. I have yet to work on my uncle's tractor, but I will get to it sometime in a couple weeks. I get nervous working on his stuff. Inadequate info provided in the video. You need to unscrew a couple hoses to take the pump off. The creator has not mentioned it at all.
Except for when he said you need to remove the two hoses! At 1:25. AND then mentioned reconnecting them after reinstalling the pump.
