Oh geeze. I'm super happy you've found some grits, but instant grits are a hate crime I would only serve to unwanted guests. 🤣 Like you said with porridge (what I would call oats), the instant stuff has some different flavors. For me, instant grits taste like chemicals and are a bit more gritty. Proper grits can be served all sorts of ways, but I prefer just butter and black pepper and the corn flavor really comes through that way.
Yes there is a huge difference especially in texture between instant and grits made from a good recipe. Most "instant" things in America sacrifice a lot of quality to make it easier to cook.
Erie is the Bomb! What a fun haul. Omg. That grits box is sold in the South. Up North, it’s plain grits only. 😂 MY food OCD completely spiraled at the lack of free space on your plate. 😁
Grits are something only a small percentage of Americans eat in general. Mainly just in the south. I’d say a tiny percentage of Americans eat instant grits on a regular basis probably less than 5%.
Instant grits aren’t nearly as good as regular grits but regular grits are far more difficult to get right. I will also say that you have to put salt, pepper and butter in your grits. Especially butter.
I wasn't certain if I was remembering correctly from my childhood, but yes, I remember a lot of butter in the country cookin' I had in the south growing up. And yes, difficult to get "right", like gravy. Only I'm not certai if I've ever had them "right" or not beacuse I never liked them!
Grits are a southern staple. What you have is nothing like grits. Think polenta. You should have been sent a regular box of grits. Grits are literally the grits left over after grinding hominy and white corn meal. Poor people ate them and just like many poor food they become a favorite. In New Orleans (where my husband was from) grits are made a little butter put on top and served with shrimp or crayfish.
I’m American and my mom used to eat grits. She was from Texas and ate all kinds of strange stuff. I grew up in California and find grits yucky. I have never seen them on offer where I currently live in New Mexico. Good job on you for trying them! 😊
“Less than nothing” 😂 instant grits are not great, haha. Homemade cheddar jalapeño grits are the superior way to eat them. Thanks for taking us on this adventure 😂
Definitely need to try some "real" grits, prepared by someone else, topped with Cajun shrimp and served with a side of collard greens. Dang, if we weren't having some sort of mega-storm tonight, I might go try to find some!
I actually lived in Moosejaw, Sask. for a short while. And I have a book or two from the Moosejaw Book Exchange on my shelf. Imagine hearing you mention it here on your channel! 🤯
I’m from Kentucky and have had grits. If it has butter on it they taste like butter. So basically they taste like nothing. The ones I had were not instant and were more like miniature rice.
I love Grits! Being from the South I prefer home cooked grits, it takes 20 minutes with some intense attention during the first 10 minutes of cooking. I was given a box of the Butter flavored Instant Grits and I realized that the oleo-ester butter flavor is the same that they use on movie theater popcorn, I was able to eat them. I cook mine in the microwave, 1.5 minutes later they are ready to eat. For my home cooked Grits, I sprinkle a little white sugar on, add butter and eat. I have also done only salt, black pepper, and butter. I like to eat my grits with a sunny-side up/over easy egg and a slice of garden fresh tomato. The runny yolk and mashed up fried white mix well with the grit especially if sweetened. 🙃
I am not a hugefan of grits but I am sure the instant ones are not the best...lol. I find it weird you are eating beans with eggs lol. 🤓 Not something we do at least in my part of the US. Love seeing people try foods from other countries! 😀
You can’t buy grits here in Canada either. When I first tried them I was surprised that they were a bit different from polenta, which I am familiar with. It must be the hominy vs yellow corn. I must say I did enjoy the shrimp and grits that I had in the states.
When you said "weird food from America, I imagined Fluff or Necco wafers. I'm a yank and I quite like grits... just not the instant ones. They have a very interesting history linked to the cure for a terrible disease endemic to the American south.
@@CriminOllyBlog Fluff (about 100 years old) is whipped marshmallow cream, invented in my city and often eaten with peanut butter in a fluffernutter sandwich. Necco wafers (about 175 years) are a local candy that tastes like colored chalk. For years I worked in the original factory where the were made and they were one of the few candy brands available here when I was a kid.
How interesting that you tried grits. I'm from the South in the US and when I was young "they" tried to get me to eat grits and the texture got me. It was like (if I remember correctly) eating something almost sandy? However, like others have said, you're really sacrificing the flavor and goodness of any cooking if it's instant. I don't think I've tried to eat grits in 30 years at least! haha. How exciting to get that signed book!
Yeah, instant grits was not the right way to go, but I'm glad your subscribers send you food from the states. I live in Alabama and I only eat grits at a really good breakfast place or for dinner in a restaurant as in "shrimp and grits" which is fabulous and can be found in restaurants all over the US. Oh, the water is supposed to be hot.🔥
I lived in Florida for 26 years and never once would try grits, even though they were on every menu! My husband would sometimes order them, and he would eat them with butter and pepper. For me, it was a texture thing. I just couldn’t do it😖
I'm not from the south and I have never eaten grits. Have never wanted to. I've also have never wanted to eat baked beans and scrambled eggs together either, so there's that. lol
I *love* grits. But instant grits are, like instant oatmeal, a bit of pablum. Those do look watery. I always use plenty of butter. Basically, grits are polenta, but a coarser grind.
Genuine American Southerner here. Grits are an acquired taste at the best of times and instant grits are not a taste that’s worth acquiring. The gulf of quality between the two is immense.
I'm american and i still don't know what grits are 😂🤣but it's southern food, I'm from the north. The bread on your plate is the only thing that looks appealing to me lol.
Original grits are virtually flavorless. They are extremely popular in the South in all their forms and you will find “shrimp and grits’ on menus in fancy restaurants. I despise them. Also, make a note to never again try anything from the US that starts with “pumpkin spice”. Now the pickle problem I do not understand. Hope you like the grits.
Grits is a thing in the south....and I'm pretty sure most southerners would cringe seeing that your experience was with instant grits. (have you had instant mashed potatoes? same type of thing. They just aren't the same) Beans with breakfast must be a British thing. I also have to say calling that weird packaged pickle an "American" thing is a stretch. I feel like that is something you might find at a weird gas station if you are having munchies in the middle of the night. The Pumpkin spice latte is def. a thing that is huge here though.
To quote a line from the movie My Cousin Vinny, “no self respecting Southerner would make instant grits.” Proper southern made grits are still icky in my opinion, but they’re better than instant grits.
Olly, you can heat water to a boil in a tea kettle as well😀 however people here in the states would be much more likely to use their microwave nowadays
I really like cheese grits especially with shrimp, but I do not know how to cook the grits properly. They never turn out right for me. I usually eat them in restaurants. I’ve only bought instant grits once and I think the instructions call for too much water. The flavor and texture of instant are weird.
Grits is just poorly ground polenta. Don’t tell that to a US southerner they seem to think they invented something (much like bar-b-que). Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to some original Italian polenta. Should be easier to get across the pond.

YESS!! It offends my Southern heart that someone's introduction to grits is instant 🤮
Agree someone please send him some real grits😂
Amen
All Olly needs is a trip to the South and have ‘biscuits’.

I don't know where you're from but I'm from Michigan and I never even heard of grits until I was almost 30 when I moved to NC.🤦♀️🙅♀️

lol Giant pickles are so good.
The one I had definitely wasn't!
You need grits made from scratch. I’ve never been able to decide if my favorite is cheese, grits, or regular grits.
I’m American and my mom used to eat grits. She was from Texas and ate all kinds of strange stuff. I grew up in California and find grits yucky. I have never seen them on offer where I currently live in New Mexico. Good job on you for trying them! 😊

The fact that you call the packets sachets, make them sound more fancy.
@@Alicia-606I think of a sachet as something holding potpourri in an old woman’s underwear drawer.
@@amyschmelzer6445 Me too! 😂

To me, it reminds me of eating sand. I think the more you eat grits, the more you get used to them, and you're tricked into enjoying them.
Ha! They were kind of sandy
I always add a dab of milk with the water and lots of butter. That was too much water. Then I put an over easy egg on top.
I am not a hugefan of grits but I am sure the instant ones are not the best...lol. I find it weird you are eating beans with eggs lol. 🤓 Not something we do at least in my part of the US. Love seeing people try foods from other countries! 😀
Grits are simply polenta - hope that helps!
Thank you!
It’s the Mukbang/Book Haul combo for me

Grits with 50/50 chicken stock/water, finish with whole milk, butter, cheddar cheese.

I've been having grits for decades. Such a comfort food in the South (U.S.). Just regular grits with plenty of butter! Yummy!
Butter does make everything good
I’m an American and I had no idea that Quaker made instant grits. Weird. But then again I live in NY. 😅
