The story you forgot was one of Mike Chinn's excellent Damian Paladin stories, of which there are two collections, both of which I edited for Pro Se Productions. 😉
Shogun is terrific but if I were Clavell's editor I could have definitely trimmed at least 400 pages. It took me nearly 4 months to finally read and I only gave it 3.5 in the end.
I'm blaming Shogun for you having an off reading week. Some books just feel like a job that keeps you away from other books. I hope you have a great time at the event today.
A correction: Small g is not a first draft, it was indeed published during Highsmith's lifetime. It was however rejected by her American publisher, so maybe that is what you are thinking. She was battling illness and nearing the end of her life when she wrote it and she did have her doubts about it, but it should be noted that it was intended as a sort of romance drama thing and not as a crime novel. But yeah, it's not great, but I also don't think it's all bad. It's just by far her weakest book.
Have a great time at the festival, Olly, and thanks for the wrap up. I always look forward to these.
Thank you! It was really fun

It was really good!

Lets see how you go after the 50% mark (Shogun). Crime non-fiction !!! Gosh. It sounds interesting.
It was very good!

Oh I might have to check out those collections. Thanks Dave!

It really is long, I'm still only a third through it
Read a hundred books before you buy new ones, maybe? I think you usually do that challenge at the end of the year, if I remember correctly
You may well be right!

Just on my way home now. It was a really interesting and enjoyable day

Even weak Highsmith is better than most writers
