    Dex is brilliant. I don't bother with a personal laptop and use Dex with a Samsung monitor, keychron keyboard and a BT mouse. It works a treat. My work laptop is a given and can't change that.

      This is a key use case. I have a work laptop, I don't want to use it for personal stuff and I don't want to buy another laptop. So a high end phone and a lapdock or portal monitor is a great option.

    Here's hoping Samsung continues to improve DeX over time, as it feels like it has kind of taken a back seat recently. Though it's also important to keep in mind that there's so much they can do, as the other half of the experience will always have to do with apps themselves and how useful they are or how many additional benefits they might offer when used in a desktop environment.

    • @techwithbenefits

      Dex will drastically improve if:

    The biggest thing missing with DeX (aside from more third-party application support for full-featured "desktop" applications) is the ability to use it natively on the inner display of the Z Fold series. There's a multi-year thread on Samsung Members with hundreds of users asking for this and Samsung continues to ignore it. Allowing DeX to run directly on the inner display of the Fold would mean you truly have a "pocketable laptop" that you can take out, unfold, and experience DeX immediately without any additional peripherals.
    Imagine the attention you would get and the good marketing this would be for Samsung. I use my Fold like this already with floating windows and a compact folding Bluetooth keyboard w/ integrated trackpad, and I continually get people coming up to me and asking what I'm using and how they can get one. The only issue currently is that floating windows in the standard UI is a relatively poor experience as there's no true taskbar like there is in DeX (you can't minimize active apps to the taskbar in the standard UI like you can in DeX) and you end up with the silly floating window bubble on your screen. The other downside is that you're subject to the archaic 5-active app limit that DeX has since gotten around via Good Lock (which should just be standard DeX functionality at this point, frankly).
    There's no reason to now allow DeX on the inner display of the Fold, and every reason to do so. If the fear is that it'd undermine Tab sales, well, I have absolutely no intention of buying a Tab anyways - that was literally the point of buying a Fold.

    • @techwithbenefits
      @techwithbenefits  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Yes definitely. That inner display would be incredible as a little monitor running dex. Samsung could sell a foldable DeX kit with a foldable keyboard, foldable stand and a mouse

    For my work I have totally went with the NexDock and Dex. I use word, excell, outlook and adobe Acrobat to edit my pdf work orders. When wlaking around my school I use my Galaxy 24 Ultra for note taking and the usual phone stuff. Then when in my office i set up Dex wireless on my dock. For me I could not ask for a better setup and ease of use. The other advantage is I use my phoe internet not the wifi at work. Better conection.

    The limitation is annoying that they should import the desktop version of Office 365 to dex, the interface is windows but the problem is it still opens mobile version of the app which doesn't make dex stand out. I wish they had added more independent settings to samsung dex.

    • @nickthaskater
      @nickthaskater 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      You can't just "import" Windows apps into Android, and Samsung has nothing to do with Microsoft knee-capping Office on Android. For what it's worth, the iPad OS version of Office has the same limitations as the Android version.
      Instead of pestering Samsung, pester Microsoft and tell them you want the full version of Office on Android.

    • @Shan_Shah
      @Shan_Shah 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @nickthaskater samsung already works with Microsoft they can collaborate with them and try to import it, surface open phone ran android. They both do have collaboration so it's possible to import the PC version of Office 365

    • @nickthaskater
      @nickthaskater 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Shan_Shah again, it's not a matter of "importing" anything. The application would need be written for Android from the ground up. Samsung can try to influence/convince Microsoft to do that (as they did with Luma Touch / LumaFusion) but there's nothing they can otherwise do to "collaborate" to "import" Office to Android.

    The lapdock would make perfect sense if it was around $200 but at over $400 why not just get a cheap laptop. If you still want to use DeX then install the PC to DeX app on the laptop. Exactly the same DeX experience but you get a windows laptop as a bonus where you can cut and paste from DeX to windows

    • @nickthaskater
      @nickthaskater 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      DeX for PC is not the same thing as running DeX directly to the display. There are numerous limitations such as resolution, HDCP (e.g. can't run Netflix through DeX for PC), latency and more. The whole point here would be to get away from Windows, too.
      This is not a value proposition, it's an aspirational one. The "dream" as it were is for convergence: one core device running Android with all of your applications natively available on your device. No synching, no transferring, not managing multiple OS and file systems.

    This is cool, however the only issue I have with it, is why? Like you said, when this is over, you are going back to your laptop. For the price if this thing, you can buy a laptop, and not be restricted by Dex. What I would like to see, from Apple (never I suspect), or any android phone, is full up Linux as a docked OS. Then you would have a real reason to use one of these, and not go back to a laptop.

    • @nickthaskater
      @nickthaskater 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Because by doing this and by raising awareness it increases the likelihood of some day being able to only carry one "core" device (your phone) and simply plug in or cast to different devices as needed to access your "desktop". Look up the term "convergence" and you'll see that this is the dream for many people.
      You don't need to run another OS, either. There's absolutely nothing stopping Android from running full versions of applications other than developers not coding them for it. You can see a great example of this with Krita for Android - it's a 1:1 version of the desktop app running natively on Android.
      Android can do everything any other OS can do, it just needs developers to code applications for it. Fussing around with running Linux containers is poor UX and doesn't allow you to tap into the applications that you have installed natively on your phone. It's beside the whole point of convergence. Rather, advocate for developers to bring more full-featured applications to Android and we'll be good.

      Agree, but I've been doing the same, and just carrying the phone and no laptop in business trips just feels nicer. Plus I don't have to keep two copies of items or remember which device I copied to which device. I sometimes don't use dex and just use it as a phone to do quick emails.

    • @techwithbenefits
      @techwithbenefits  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I take your point, but it's more about only using your phone for everything, and then when you need more space, dock it into a lapdock and use extra space. A small laptop or a 2 in 1 tablet is another device that needs to hold your information. Your phone can hold it all and then become your laptop should you need one.

I never thought it would be that hard, but apparently nobody is really making good quality gaming headsets for Android, which really sucks if you're trying to play video games or do something that requires a microphone.

  • @michaelcorcoran8768

    I find potential better option to these next dock type solutions is just to get a used Galaxy tab S7 or 8 or something. Those run dex natively or with an external monitor. So I just find it to be a less clunky solution. Although I suppose the benefit of these lap docs is that they have other use cases outside dex. You could use it as a second monitor for a computer on Windows or something or for a steam deck or something.
    But if those uses aren't important to you, I would probably for the same price I would probably choose a Galaxy tab on the resale market or even brand new sometimes.
    The Galaxy tab 7 I have now with what I told GB was $461 brand new with Galaxy buds pro thrown in. But I haven't seen Samsung run any similar deals on the newer model.
    So they discontinued the 512 GB version on a lot of the 11 inch solutions which is frustrating.

      I think the option i like about the lapdock is that i don't need another device with different files on it. I can operate it all from my phone.

    The wireless charger sounds good in theory but doesn't make a lot of sense. If you are using Dex with the phone resting on top of the dock, you are probably plugged in, which already charges the phone 🤷‍♂
    One feature that would have been nice (for the laptop dock thing I mean) is a USB-C port that faces *inward* allowing you to rest the phone across the flat area without a u-bended cable sticking out to the side. It would have to be a bit recessed and would compromise on interior component space a bit, but it would be nice just to keep things tidier.

The s10 series will have 7 years of support, and if you're on the budget, get the tab s8 instead of the tab s9 fe it's basically a larger galaxy a54 and I felt like they could've given us much better specs in favor of ip68 the decision was weird they gave it ip68 on a mid range tablet which isn't a necessary feature especially on a tab, they should've gave it better specs instead of ip68 they shouldn't have putted any money on ip68 especially on a budget tablet when your making sacrifices you should first try to remove luxury feature that aren't important to average user or long term and ip rating is one of them.

There's some great apps like Solid Explorer (file manager) that has a great interface allowing closer to Windows management and abilities to integrate local, external, network, and cloud all together drag and drop too. Only limit again seems google with android with drag and drop only working on local storage between apps, and no NTFS. Come on Google if Motorola and Samsung can do all this just help em out a bit😂, Apple peeps wow over just getting a single feature of many (phone mirroring) so the opportunity is there.

    so recently, on the 20th of this month, I brought a samsung multiport usb c adapter that has an hdmi socket that can support 4k 60fps
    but when I connect my phone to the monitor through the samsung usb c hub via hdmi cable(the hdmi cable that has come along with the monitor) I am not getting a smooth experience, I am getting a very laggy experience, maybe 4k 30fps and I am also seeing a lot of visible lag in my s24 ui, home screen, notification panel lag but this not happening when I am connecting my s24 to the monitor with just the usb c to c cable that supports audio, video and charging as well
    I am here now thinking, is there a problem with samsung usb c hub 4k 60fps hdmi socket or is there a problem with my hdmi cable, and I think obvisouly there should be no problem with the hdmi cable since the cable came along with the monitor and supports hdmi 2.0 standards and it is the first time I am using this hdmi cable ever since I brought the monitor few months before
    I guess there is a problem with samsung usb c 4k 60 fps hdmi socket
    and now the question is
    is it possible to achieve 4k 60fps output through a usb c hub via hdmi cable between the phone and the monitor

    Might as well carry a book 4 pro because your still carrying a lap dock, on galaxy tablet this feature is pratical but not on a smartphone because you still need another device so why even bother.

    • @nickthaskater
      @nickthaskater 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Because the device that's being carried is a "dumb" device - it's not another OS/file system to manage, transfer, sync etc. You also don't *need* to carry a lapdock if you're going to the office or someplace with a USB-C dock/monitor (most offices these days have USB-C docking hot desks that you can plug a laptop - or a phone - into). In those cases, all you're bringing with is your phone, which you do already. The lapdock is just if you want to get stuff done along the way.

    • @Shan_Shah
      @Shan_Shah 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @nickthaskater well if you're already connecting your device to a desktop, you might as well use a desktop rather than connecting your mobile device. It defeats the purpose. On the galaxy tab, this feature is more practical as the screen is large enough to run dex, only they need to remove limitations and make samsung dex more independent. Discounting linux was a mistake, and if they worked on it, it would've eventually become stable, importing C++ software. Ya, not everyone uses it, but it could come in hand for CS people. Imports the desktop version of Office 365 would be smart as most people use Office 365. This feature has a lot of potential, but samsung is kinda ignoring it, and they might abandon dex like they abandoned Linux. The new dex even took the desktop interface away ya I know you can switch back to the old phone, but this showcases you the sign dex might get discontinued. The difference between the galaxy tab ui and dex is very minimal, and with the Taskbar brought to zfold and tablet 2 years ago, eliminates use of dex. The only difference is that you can't minimize apps the same way. Dex can't get you anything new other than making mobile app usage possible in a desktop interface. It's nothing like without dex, productivity can't be done, you can get pretty much same productivity without dex done, one ui is already super advanced. In order to continue to keep dex alive, samsung has to aim to make it a laptop replacement for most user.

    • @nickthaskater
      @nickthaskater 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Shan_Shah you're not "connecting to a desktop," you're connecting to peripherals and replacing the desktop with a phone.
      The point is having a single "core" device. Getting a Tab, a laptop, etc. is counter to this point.
      The taskbar on the Tab and Fold is completely different than the taskbar in DeX - you can't minimize active apps to it like you can in DeX.
      You keep talking about "importing" things into Android. That's not how coding works.
      The only major thing stopping DeX from being a true PC replacement for some is the availability of third-party applications. The only thing preventing third-party applications from being available on Android is the developers themselves. The developers could code the apps to work natively on Android if they wanted - it's up to the users to convince them that it's worthwhile.
      There's no need to get Linux involved. Android already does everything it needs to do.

      That's a $2,000 solution with the OLED screen. For a lot of people one of the benefits of dex cuz you can take the phone you already own and use it for productivity work. Or you could buy 11-in Galaxy tab for a few hundred bucks.
      I love a surface pro and I use one although I almost never use it as a tablet on the go. But I find myself using the surface pro at home on my desk and my Galaxy tab when I'm on the go. Gets almost twice the battery life.
      I suppose the battery life has improved of the version you have assuming you have the new Snapdragon chip although I'm seeing conflicting information about exactly how much benefit it has.
      I've seen estimates ranging from 5 hours of screen on time to 12 hours of screen on time so I guess I'll never know unless I try it myself.
      But it's just so damn expensive. When I bought my surface pro 4 years ago or whatever it was like 700 bucks. Those days are gone. Lol

    • @tronalddump404
      @tronalddump404 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Your're right about the price, but Galaxy Tab9 Ultra was expensive too. The batterylife on the Pro 11 is around 9-10 hrs of normal use I think, wich is enough for me on a workday. But the normal MS Office experience on the move is very important to me. I lost work on the Samsung with Office for Adroid, thats why it is a no go for me. Everbody can have a different use case.
