Well, it's not a new instrument. Maybe Dru's was new and made by him-which is very cool-but it is extremely important to contextualize it. It's a marímbula, pronounced like @camposjcc shared-an instrument developed around the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century through the innovation of African enslaved and Afro-Caribbean people in the region, seeking to emulate the sound of the bass using the construction technique of African lamellophones, like the mbira. Some historians place its origin in Cuba, others in Haiti. In Cuba, it's used in the changüí music genre; in Mexico, it's used for son jarocho; in the Dominican Republic, in merengue típico; in Jamaica, it's used in mento, and in Puerto Rico, it was used for plena. Eventually, it made its way to the African continent. Other names for the instrument include rumba box, bajo de flejes, bajo de los pobres, marimbol, marímbula, marímbola, marimba, and many more. Such a great instrument that speaks volumes about the history of the Caribbean region and the impact of African mastery of music and technique in our current music and culture, which, as a Puerto Rican, I hold near and dear.
