This documentary changed my life. I have lost 65lbs, gotten stronger and reversed early onset of metabolic syndrome. Grateful for this man and wisdom he has shared. Unfortunately so many ignorant beliefs on food and sugar addiction. As an addiction specialist I am ecstatic with the development of brain science and physiology of the endocrine system.

If a product says its low in fat then you can guarantee it will be high in sugar. Food labels can be very deceiving. And healthy foods are always very expensive compared to fatty and sugary food, which are so cheap and seem to be everywhere you go.

Fast food used to be a treat. I remember my folks (who both worked) ) late 60s early 70s, would buy it for us kids on a Friday night when we would all go out to the drive in movies. Kentucky fried chicken once or twice a year. Pizza 3 or 4 times a year. Chinese rarely. Now people eat these (food treats) as dinner, and for most of their meals? Also, my folks wouldn't dream of serving soda with any meal, except for summer BBQs and picnics, a weekend treat. Jeez, soda used to be expensive, and you never got free refills. I raised my kids the same way. I'm tired of being visually assaulted every time I leave the house. Most have no shame and flaunt it with tattoos and skimpy clothing. Its just unbelievable how quickly obesity has become the norm. Make time to cook at home once in a while, and when your kid is hungry between meals, give them an apple or an orange to suffice. Its OK and used to be normal to feel hunger between meas. Its just awful the things I see kids eating, that their parents choose to give them, as they walk around the grocery store and streets. I'm really beginning to think, now that there are so many obese people. How in the world are they going to raise normal weight and able children, when they themselves refuse to see the light. Just sickening. Stop buying all that processed sugary garbage, and reeducate yourself on eating life giving foods. Its really not that difficult. Sorry for the rant. Just spent!

Joe Edwards, Keep it up! I hope you aren't hungry. I am on almost 2000 calories a day, not that I'm really counting, just eating twice a day until I'm full, exercise 2 - 3 times a week on a treadmill and rowing machine for about 70 minutes each time, getting my heart rate to approximately 2.5 resting (resting = 43). I have been doing this for less than 6 months so about 2 lbs a week. Why are my daily calories double yours and I'm losing the same amount of weight each week with only a small amount of exercise? Probably what I am eating and how the body metabolizes it, wouldn't you say? I'm never hungry except before eating of course. No snacks.

I'm from Norway, when I visited the USA I went into the supermarket and picked out a cereal that looked like it had little suger in it( it was a bit hard to compare since it's not in %', but it was among the better once). I then picked out some low fat milk to go with it. It was so sweet I couldn't stomach it. I forced down a bowl, the rest went in the trash. Back at the supermarket, new reading og labels of a dozen of cereals, came back with what seemed the lowest in sugar, made a bowl with milk. Again I ate one bowl, threw away the rest, it was too sweet to sweet to eat.
After 2 weeks I went back to Norway, but 8 months later I came back to America for a 2,5 month stay. This time I brought with me the cereal I ate in Norway. Bought the low fat milk again, (didn't knew any better back then), and again the cereal tasted sweet. What was going on? This time I could eat it, but it was still way sweeter than back in Norway. It's not like someone poured suger in the box while I flew over the Atlantic. The only thing that was changed was the milk, so I checked it. In Norway, low fat milk is low fat milk, In the USA low fat milk is low fat milk with 37% more sugar. I poured out the milk and gave up totally on cereals at that point.
My diet wasn't great when I was over there. I ate some hamburgers and fries, some pizza and tacos and sandwiches, but since the products was different than the Norwegian once, I didn't knew how to cook with them, so I ended up eating a LOT of cheddar cheese, almonds and apples. Tended to be my evening meal almost every day and sometime during the day too. I also snacked on seeds now and then. Now I was NOT dieting, and ate whenever I was hungry, I still lost 5 pounds during that time. Without thinking about it I had increased my fat intake and, despite some bad meals, decreased my carb intake. And it caused me to loose weight.
So I say Americans probably have a harder time avoiding the sugar products as they are way more abundance than in some other countries, but it's still possible. I did it without even trying. Of course cheese and almonds is not a good long term solution, but the LCHF defiantly helps regulate your appitate and will probably cause you to loose weight.

Lustig says "it hasn't worked" referring to the idea that a calorie from carrots is the same as a calorie from cake. While that may be true, he's also ignoring the fact that Americans haven't even been trying to get their calories from sources like carrots; people in this country do not eat anywhere near the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables.

  • @MeadeSkeltonMusic
    @MeadeSkeltonMusic 12 ปีที่แล้ว

Not so. Fruit is a simple sugar, unlike refined sugar and cane sugar. The body does not usually have a problem with fruit raising insulin levels. Did you know that sugar is also in vegetables as well? Basically any carn is a sugar. Fruit also helps people get sweet tasting food without as many calories, and it has many vitamins we need.

Just bought hamburger rolls at Costco. By the label you would think you are buying health food. The label contains the USDA food plate, and some bogus statement about how grains are essential for your well being. And no trans-fats of course (did hamburger buns ever have trans-fat?). It is a very sad state of affairs.
And who is head of the USDA? The former governor of Iowa. And whose interests does he represent? That's right, the wheat and corn (HFSC) producers. What a joke.

This excellent presentation omits a sacred cow--the contribution of rapid growth and increased height to the obesity epidemic. Birth weight is tied to the mother's height and weight before pregnancy. These factors promote higher birth weight and birth weight is correlated with overweight and obesity. Freedman also found that children that are tall at about 8 years of age are 5 times more likely to become obese adults compared to 8 year olds that are shorter than average.

The body is a very complex mechanism, more so than anyone has previously realized. And then there's the genetic component...people who were able to hold onto fat lived through famines and thus passed these "fat genes" along.

Its about eating real food...not foods with preservatives and junk in them. I totally understand what you are saying though. It isn't easy. It requires research and lifestyle changes. Watch some videos or read some blogs by Dr. Mark Hyman. He has some really great tips that WILL help.

Yes, there are other factors, but exercise and a healthy diet help regulate hormones, insulin levels, serotonin levels, etc. That said, it might not make you a supermodel; however, it will help maintain weight at a reasonable level, unless you have a severe condition, such as brain tumors, etc.

No. Sugar causes a "feel good" response in the reward center of your brain, so you crave more. This is equal to the response delivered by cocaine, heroin, caffeine, nicotine and several deadly-addictive compounds. And the more sugar you eat, the more that is required to get that pleasurable feeling, so your intake multiplies exponentially.

That's why I look mainly at calories, sugars & carbs. Fats are viewed too, but usually when calories are high so are the fats. If you decrease calories, you're also decreasing fats. Fats & calories are twins, If one is high, usually the other is just as high or higher. :) I also noticed that calories aren't always the case of gaining weight, carbs are. I decrease my carbs intake to 70-90g & I lost weight fast. If I were on the stricter end of Atkins (0-50g Carbs.) I would be a size 0 in a month.

Yes but it can be almost always tracked back to what I have mentioned. And yes, Enviromental toxins mainly aditives in junk food. When it comes to insulin resitance that is almost always caused by having more sacharide in your diet than you can handle. I have lost huge amount of weight simply by cuting sacharide (adjusting to the level of the activity), ditching plant oils and eating much more satfat. In two years I have lost 40kg and got tremendous muscle gain.

Saccharides is the correct term used for what anglo-american people are used to call carbohydrates. That is archaic term derived from poor udnerstanding of their chemical structure. The sachs aren't problem on themselves nor is it neccesary to cut them. You nearly have to adjust them depending on your level of physical activity. You can't sit in school/job all day eating bagels and stuff but sure as hell can't go through heavy exercise without having some stockpiled ready to be used.

I can remember when the mantra was: simply take in less calories than you burn (some still are sticking with this). It should have become apparent a long time ago that it's not that simple. The body processes different foods in a different manner. Plus the fact that people fall into different metabolic groups. What works for one does not necessarily work for another. For instance, I need a high activity level coupled with low fat diet, while others can get by with moderate exercise.

Question: If Sugar intake has decreased 40% and consumption of animal fats has also been reduced, where have the calories that are making people obese coming from?
I don't think anyone is claiming a magic bullet. But if we can turn the clock back 30 years, that would be a real achievement. Eating like we did 30 years ago would go a long way to bringing that about.

I went low carb---less than 20g a day (mostly from vegetables) and completely eliminated my cravings for sugar, without much effort on my part, and I stopped craving sweet things. My treat is mixed berries with a couple of tablespoons of heavy cream. I've lost 7 lbs in five weeks.

Epidemiological studies provide trends not absolutes. Whenever a study says that birth weight correlates with the mother's weight and height, it represents a general trend but there are exceptions as in the example of your 10 lb infant.

it's not just absense of physical activity or eating too much, hormones have to do with it too! and sometimes it's genetic. there are some people like me who work out and diet yet they can't lose weight b/c they have PCOS or insulin resistance...so NO it's not that simple, other factors play a part too

  • @bigschnabel

The problem is not laziness, but lack of knowledge about what to eat. Even the experts can't agree on what a healthy diet really is, so I wonder how anyone else should know. It's not a lack of motivation, but a lack of knowledge about what to do. Think of the thousands of people who starve tons of weight off their bodies just to put it back on again and then starve it off again. That takes work and a lot of motivation.

  • @beaufordslyone

Plain and simple: Lack of physical activity. Americans drive everywhere. People in other countries ride bikes and walk far more than Americans. The people of other countries eat very similar food. They have soda, candy , chocolate etc. The difference is in the level of physical activity.

I didn't say it was Atkins, never even read the book. I actually began with Protein Power's induction phase and just stuck with it. I didn't see a point in trying to keep a gross amount of carbs in my diet when the deconstruction of triglycerides provides all the glucose I need. You're right, it's not practical at all. I always have to throw away the bun from my burgers.

I've been steadily reducing sugar intake over the past two years. It's amazing...I bought into the whole deal of "metabolism slows in the early 30's" but that's a crock. The hard part was the withdrawals and ravenous hunger. It was much worse than quitting smoking.

  • @Nivimary

I've always thought a calorie isn't a calorie but the majority want to convince otherwise, which is not correct in my opinion. Well, to some degree, it has a lot to do with the source of the food you eat, not a number of calories. Like, cake v.s. carrots, though in the same amount of calories, cake is more fattening due to its substances. I've gone for the liquid diet all the way for a week and noticed a difference. And if they say liquid's calories and solid calories are the same, not true.

  • @gi8e7oi825
    @gi8e7oi825 12 ปีที่แล้ว

You are 100% correct! I absolutely am eating them in mostly fat (>= 75%) and protein. The glycerol molecules (from triglycerides, a.k.a. "fat molecules") is my source of glucose AND energy. The human body REQUIRES exactly 0 g carbs/day. This is easy to understand because there are NO diseases resulting from a carbohydrate deficiency. There are, however, myriad diseases resulting from fat and/or protein deficiencies, and, as you already know, problems with TOO much carbohydrate intake. :)

Thank you for getting it! Of course, even good education and cooking skills don't overcome all problems that inherently make poverty "fattening". There's a lot to be said about total stress, and the TYPE of stress, as well as facing the same problems in the kitchen pantry as on convenience store shelves. I can only shop for groceries twice a month. I try to buy fresh foods, but must buy foods that will last long-term too. That usually means starch. Also, starches "stretch" meals. What can I do?

I noticed the same thing last time I went to Tennessee for a family reunion. I live in California. I couldn't believe the plethora of lard butts I saw walking around, including within my family. It's really sad. I did not eat most of what was served. I made smarter eating choices ,and not just at that reunion. I do that at home too.
For some reason when it comes to food, many people are not mentally strong, and don't listen to their bodies, and they are lazy when it comes to exercise.

  • @monkeyfunkyJohn

They said to cut fat and we got fat. Dr. Atkins said the opposite and his patients lost weight. Now we can finally see them start to re-evealuate the great advice they've been pushing for 40 years plus. Whether you're successful as a vegetarian/vegan or keto/low-carb the true culprit is the same: Easily digestable carbohydrates that raise insulin and turn into fat as soon as the body absorbs them.

Lustig and his colleagues even acknowledge the fact that there are so many hypotheses to choose from that it’s hard to keep track. Seems like in order to address obesity, we’re going to have take a balanced approach by eating less and exercising more. If there’s no one cause that we can point to, then there’s certainly no magic bullet that can fix it.

I used to be 230lbs two years ago. When I saw videos of people starving in Africa, I thought it was immoral of me to be obese and starting to loose weight. I still weigh a hefty 170lbs, but I'm improving. The corporations won't change what they are putting in out food. You have to take initiative and do it yourself unfortunately.

I had to actually get a journal and write down what I eat each day in order to track my calories. I figured out I'm comfortable with an average of 1546 calories a day and exercising 5 days a week. I also eat high protein... And finally I figured it out, but I'll have to journal what I eat for the rest of my life.

Because I'm so small and expense every little calories, I have to eat far less than you do and vegetarianism, but it works so well compare to other diets. I'm so close to my prefer weight and size. I feel comfortable at size 2-4. Zero I feel like I would lose too much of my fluff and make me have wrinkles. I rather stay my hobbit-self. :) Not everyone is met to have the same lifestyle. We humans are one of the most diverse creatures on the planet and should be. All this bickering and fighting over food is stupid... just be glad it is there. I sometimes want to shove all these haters of diet diversity and shove them into famine country, see what then. Anyways, I do apologize for any offense with that last statement. I'm so glad and happy that you found something that works for you TheDtfamus89. I agree that a food journal is a very wise thing to do. I do it too. You aren't alone. Best to you on sticking to it. :) Peace be.

It could also have to do with your age. If you are younger you are able to get away with eating more food but staying physically fit. As you age your metabolism slows and you will no longer be able to keep it up.

Snackwells and Fig Newtons make up a tiny portion of the cookie and cracker aisle. Snackwells aren't even very low fat! It is very efficient for the body to store dietary fat. Making fat out of carbohydrates is inefficient and consequently the body doesn't do very much of that (about 5% of overconsumed carb calories can be turned into fat).
