  • Hi guys, here is a bit of an update on my African Cichlid Tanks. As you'd know I've been travelling, so I wanted to give you an update on how my aquariums are going... Unfortunately I have some not so great news in the Malawi Cichlid tank.
I wanted to share my experience so you know what is happening, and maybe it's something you can be mindful of too in your own tanks. Hopefully it is helpful to you. I also head to Atlas Aquarium to buy some food and check out some rare fish to help lighten up the mood a bit :D Enjoy!!

I’m so sorry this happened while you were away! 😢 I’m glad I could be there before anything got really bad and we lost more and I’m so happy to hear there was a silver lining with the Anubias. They definitely prefer lower light. Fingers crossed we got ontop of it and no more issues from here on out!

Hey Kaity I commented if you can find it. If not, I have three peacocks I’d be willing to give you since they will eventually outgrow my 182 litre. They’re still probably are still around 5-7cm though so I’m not sure if you’d want them, but they’re available for you for free :)

Anything that can educate us as fishkeeps is always a bonus, would also be interesting to hear the fish experts opinions on whether you need to do a big water change/treatment after finding a dead fish in the tank. Ive had it happen before where a fish has died and got lodged under some driftwood etc and by the time id noticed it it was well decomposed / eaten. I always remember hearing if a fish died of natural causes it may be picked at by others but if it dies and the body remains untouched its a bad sign. The only thing i know is bad for sure is that smell when you remove one that been in there a while !

Happy to see Layla back representing the vids and the merch. As you say always the unexpected will happen the minute your away. At least your friends were there to prevent that high temp killing off the tank. Ive seen people just have the temp alarms set up on their tanks with probes so it will warn if it gets too high/low but again thats all well and good if it goes off when someone is there to rectify it :D Glad your back home safe and looking forward to some updates on the other tanks

Sorry to hear about your fish! High temperatures can be rough; in addition to increasing the activity level of the fish, warm water holds less oxygen than cooler water so it's a bit of a perfect storm that can lead to more losses.
I wonder if you've considered using heaters with built-in thermostats as well as your heater controller? You could set the heaters' thermostats to, say, 28°C but have the heater controller set at your regular temp (26°-ish). That way, even if the heater controller goes rogue and tries to boil your tank, the thermostats on the heaters would shut off at 28° as a sort of fail-safe.

Sorry to hear you had issues with your aquarium whilst away that lead to the death of one of your cichlids 😢 Hopefully it's all fixed now and all the fish are ok! Definitely get a fish vet on, they're really cool and there aren't all that many specialist fish vets either. Had talks from them on my degree, and my friend who recently qualified as a vet also had a talk from a fish vet which she really enjoyed! Did a module on fish health and nutrition too, fish pathology and parasitology are fascinating subjects to learn about! Are you planning on any more videos on the rack system coming up? Would be really cool to see an update on those systems!

Nice to get an update on your tanks.not all good news but these things happen.😕i think you should definitely get new fish!! more fish looked better!😊besides i think i would start to miss the occasional" your tank is overstocked"comments.😅😅 I was wondering if you're using the sunset/sunrise settings on your lights?oh and cool to that little braniac Laila again, it's funny how clever she is!😅

@@Kaityscichlidswhen i had a bb algae problem i streched those ramp up and down times so the times with high peak lights got shorter. It took a bit of time and experimenting to find the balance between as much light as possible and not too much so the bb wouldn't grow.but it helped.maybe you can give it a try?+i don't know about ac but my fish show their coolest colors and most interesting behavior during sunset! it's my favorite time of the day 🙂

I use same equipment, eheim heaters and inkbird 308 controller . A safer way to set up is use 2 smaller heaters each connected to its own controller that way if one malfunctions, the problem, either too warm or too cool tank water occurs half as fast.

The one I caught as I was cleaning tank it was roasting The second One was too late. I walked past one tank and it felt warm. I drop half the water had ice cubes and still above 30degreas.
