We have a few in Hawaii on the big island. We have to trim one that’s probably about 6’ wide at the base. Covered in vines and branches going straight down.
I haven't ever specifically just worked on the ground really. While working in grounds maintenance/ greenspaces I took days off to get my Arb qualifications and did recreational climbs at weekends and most evenings through summer. I got my first job as a "utility arborist" in this role I worked in a small team where we both did everything. At the time my real ambition was to be a lead climber. As a result the fella I was working with let me do the majority of climbing and really mentored me to get me working quickly, efficiently and safely. So to answer you question I was doing very small climbing jobs the first week at work. I had been training for at least 6 months beforehand however. I just progressed from there basically. Sorry for the long reply, hope this helps. Stay safe.
Matt, where was this tree located? What country? Monkey Puzzle trees are mostly in Chile and Argentina, or so I thought, but you don't sound like you are from either of those places. Man, there sure was a lot of droppings below the speed line. By the end there was almost a carpet of tree debris! Stay safe, and thank you for adding to the growing library of tree work videos so many of us enjoy.
Hi Dwayne it was in the north of England not far from Manchester. It was in pretty poor state to be honest. Thank you for your comment. I will keep trying😁. Stay safe.
Got busy with my first one today - stripped branches till midday when temp reached 39 degrees C. Feeling nervous 🙂 Thanks for yr video

Yeah it was in a bad way. It had been in decline for a while. As soon as I put a sling on the bark just peeled off.
How long did you work on the ground before you did your 1st climb?

Hey, do you have an idea how old this would have been? Never seen a monkey puzzle so huge!
I have no idea to be honest sorry. There was an article in a local paper when we removed the tree. That may have more information on it.
They get a lot bigger than that.
My hands got all swollen after I done my first one. Learn by 😱
Yeah I can imagine, really glad I had them thick gloves on!
Great video. How long the whole job actually take?
Thank you, we had two days on this job. We had it all done and cleaned up just after dinner on the second day.
I rescued a cat out of one of these once. Very painful was cut to ribbons! Never again!
Yeah, I was a little lucky this one was in poor health. One of the other lads has agreed to do the next one......Winner.
Lol chipping them can be just as bad so dunno if I prefer up the tree or on the floor with these.
@@rosspatterson9397 yes didn't really think of that Ross. I think it's a horrible day for everyone 😂

The tree was not in good health as you can see from the video. Get your facts right before spouting off in the comments section.
Shame on you killing this beautiful old tree.
Have you even watched the video?
