Joe Satriani is a legend among guitar players. He's old now, but him, Steve Vai, and some others are legendary. His song "Surfing with the Alien" was a huge hit and was even in some games like NASCAR 99.
Alright guys here we go. The electric guitar is capable of producing a lot of different sounds depending on who is playing it. The sounds you had never heard before were coming from Joe using the whammy bar (or tremelo bar). It allows the player to lower or raise the pitch of the strings by either pushing down on it (to lower) or pulling up on it (to raise the pitch). The brown guitar (Acoustic) can have whats called an under saddle pick up installed or built into when the guitar is made. Then you plug it into an amp or the p.a. system of a venue you're playing. Its the only way you could hear that guitar with the band playing. Electric guitars can be plugged into different pedals also that change the sound of a guitar
I saw him in KC. Some drunk threw a bottle at him and he dodged it like a pro. Then the bouncer came up to me and tried to throw me out because I was standing next to the guy. Satch stopped the song and was like no dude it wasn’t him it was that guy. After the show I got to talk to him and he was like if you’re ever in Cali and want lessons look me up. He’s real down to earth for being an alien.
Satch was pretty much responsible for popularising guitar instrumentals when he released the Surfing with the Alien album in 1987, and 'Always with me, Always with you' was getting a lot of radio play, while the album's title track seemed to turn up everywhere. 😏 Fun fact: Joe played nearly everything on the record himself! What separates him from many other rock guitar virtuousos are his compositions... very melodic and 'song-like'.
@@doccthomas9842 Blow by blow was 1974 wired was 1976 and you're right I think Jeff Beck was the first to popularize guitar instrumental albums. Don't forget about there and back 1980
The genius of Joe Satriani is audible in the studio and visible on stage... a shy kid from the East Coast, he picked up guitar in the 70's, and found himself teaching guitar to students - guitar hero Steve Vai was an early student. He moved to California and played in a band called The Squares, but supported himself by teaching guitar (Kirk Hammett of Metallica and Larry LaLonde of Primus were his students in the 80's). In 1986, he recorded an album of guitar instrumental music (which was not commercially viable in those years), going into enormous credit card debt to release his first album 'Not of this Earth', which he reportedly sold copies of out of the trunk of his car. Relativity records signed Joe Satriani in 1987 and released his next album 'Surfing with the Alien' - it shocked everyone by charting and selling a half million copies in the US as a guitar instrumental record. This video was for the track 'Flying in a blue dream' from the same album name in 1989, which became another gold-selling success... Satriani peaked w/ the 1991 album 'The Extremist'... the track 'Summer song' became a standout single. It was followed by a 2 CD album 'Time machine' (1993) which featured a studio album and a live disc. In 1993, Joe Satriani also did a tour as the fill-in guitarist of Deep Purple, when their guitarist Ritchie Blackmore left the band... Guitarist Steve Morse would join Deep Purple in 1994. Over the years, Joe Satriani has recorded a string of instrumental albums and supported them w/ headlining tours... He established the G3 tour w/ guitarist Steve Vai, which had a few successful runs over years. Some of his notable records are: 'Crystal planet' (1998)... 'Super colossal' (2006)... ''Shockwave supernova' (2015). His latest album is 'The elephant of Mars' (2022). Satriani also recorded 2 albums as the band Chickenfoot w/ former Van Halen members Sammy Hagar (vocals), Michael Anthony (bass), and Chad Smith (drums) from the Red Hot Chili Peppers... 'Chickenfoot' (2009) and 'Chickenfoot III' (2011).
Excellent! excellent! Great background of course, you are 100% right you put it in words better than I could. I love that time machine CD, and the extremist was awesome too! Then I loved the live in San Francisco double CD I still play all the time.

Electric guitars use "pickups" to generate an electric signal via magnets, coils and the string vibrating above them. That electric signal generated is quiet, raw and quite nasty sounding. Guitar amplifiers tweak the EQ to something more pleasant and amplify it. They can also use lots of effects or amplifier settings to really manipulate the sound from clean to heavy distortion to far-out ambiance and synth stuff. Really versatile instruments. Acoustic guitars can be fitted with pickups as well. Lots of little details to it, but that is how you can also hear them and also why they still somewhat sound like a real acoustic guitar. You can use this pickup technique on most string instruments. So you can get electric violins, cellos and banjos, etc.
You blokes should check out taj farrant from Australia. He's one of the best guitarists of the last few years. He's 13 years old now but has been doing some amazing things for years. Youngest player ever signed up by Gibson guitars. Plays well beyond his years.
You plug the guitar into an amp, however here Joe is using a wireless device that has a battery. An acoustic doesn't plug in unless it's an electric-acustic. Joe Satriani Cool#9, Luminous Flesh Giant, and Raspberry Jam Delta-V are fantastic.
I heard "Surfin' with the alien" on the radio.Bought the album a day later, and my first electric guitar about a week later. The fat brown guitar is acoustic, but almost all modern guitars are plug-n-play. Meaning that they have built in electronics to pick up vibrations and send them for amplification. That sound is a whammy bar and feedback... the whammy bar loosens or tightens the strings depending on the direction it is moved. look up feedback, its like sound loop through the amp and guitar
"Acoustic" guitars can be microphoned up, fitted with a temporary pickup, or are made as an acoustic/electric combo. There are many styles, from classical nylon(or catgut) string, to concert form(nylon/catgut or full steel string), to dreadnaught steel string. Those and other styles are then perhaps further modified. "Electric" guitars are often solid body(ie, carved from one piece of wood and solid), or semi-solid bodied (ie, carved from a piece of wood and then slightly hollowed out). Gibson makes some awesome semi-hollow guitars, if I remember correctly. The neck of the guitar can be an attachment or also part of the solid wood carving process. Then, you add analog or digital "pickups". Humbucklers for example are perhaps an industry standard for pure analog style pickups. EMG makes digital pickups that are sometimes preferred by metal or whatever musicians. The pickups grab the sound digitally and transfer the noise into an analog form. Humbucklers do not require the digitization process.
They are not digitized. Pick ups for guitar are either passive (what you are calling analog) or active ( they require a 9 volt battery to power them). EMG is probably the biggest name in active pickups. They have a popular set , 81 & 85 , used by Zakk Wylde (Ozzy , BLS).Passive pick ups do not need a battery. Most guitars have passive pick ups in them.
as a life long music lover of all genres its great to see you guys getting exposed and opened up to all the various styles of popular music that is out there yeah ;)
There's a regular guitar and then there are bass guitars, they have thick strings and lower notes. Out of guitars you could have acoustics (wooden ones) they can have pick ups inside them sometimes so you could plug it in to amplify the sound (acoustic electrics) or just have a regular acoustic without. Some electric guitars, which have solid wood bodies, mostly, could have a battery inside them to amplify the pickups even more acoustics have hollow bodies. Basically there's a lot of different kinds of guitars and shit. Sick video!
Love your videos guys! I've been a huge Joe Satriani fan since I was a kid. Got to see him live and he's amazing. FYI - as long as your acoustic guitar has a pickup inside, you can plug it into an amp.
Al Di Meola helped both Steve Vai and Joe Satriani get their starts and he's the guy they look up to for good reason! Al Di Meola's live video of 'Race with the devil on a spanish highway' is a great introduction!
In my opinion he is the best! he plays with such feeling and being able to phrase his notes and he gets tones and feeling that nobody else can do. I seen him several times on the G3 tour a few years back I saw him with Steve Vai and Neal schon made a surprise visit and it was awesome!
Joe Satriani’s Summer Song is a great driving song. Also check out Steve Vai. Satriani was one of Vai’s guitar teachers. Also check out Tony MacAlpine who often gets forgotten but is an amazing guitarist from the same era.
I first came accross Joe in a record shop mid 80s. I seen a cassette tape (when Joe had a full head of long hair) that only had 4 or 5 songs. It was a demo so I bought it and I became a fan. Since then I have a collection of his cassettes & CDs. There's too many songs to list that I like by him. He actually gave another legend Steve Vai early guitar lessons.
If y'all want to see Joe Satriani go off into another realm during his solo, y'all need to react to "Cortez the Killer" by Grace Potter and friends, he plays lead on it.

He was known as the guitar teacher to Rockstars! Gotta listen to the whole album! Classic! LOUD!!! He’s touring right now! Hitting my state TEXAS soon! Listen to that record guy’s, I know what I’m talking about. Do It Loud.
New subscriber here! I've seen Joe once in Minneapolis. Loud as hell. Our bro here mentioned "charging the guitar." Most guitars simply plug into the amplifier where the sound is generated. Some guitars have batteries in back, but that is usually for the pickups that further amplify the signal to the amplifier. Joe's main influence BTW is Jimmy Hendrix.
Guys, if you like this Satriani song, try Crushing Day! This guy is my favorite artist, and Crushing Day, in my opinion, is his all time masterpiece. I recommend listening to the studio version first - what a rock solid, tight solo in that one! Speaking of video games - his song Summer Song was in GT4. And his song The Golden Room was considered for the movie Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. They ultimately didn't use it, but it should've been - awesome song with definite mid-eastern taste to it. If haven't delved into Satriani after this video, you need to. His older stuff is better. Enjoy guys, God bless!
Welcome to SatchWorld my dudes. Loved the reactions as well as the pre and post talk too. I'll jump in and add that electric guitars aren't plugged into a wall outlet like most electric products so the name can be a little confusing/misleading. Here's a high level overview of how it works. 1. The electric guitar has magnets called pickups... 2. When you hit the strings, the strings vibrate. 3. The magnets "pick up" those vibrations and send them electrically down a wire to an amp/speaker 4. The amp/speaker (which is plugged into an outlet) converts the electric pulses (vibrations) sent from the guitar into the sound we hear coming from the speakers. Anyway - glad to have you along for the ride! 🤘🎸
You gents are going to have your minds blown if you ever check out Tosin Abasi and his band Animals As Leaders. Definitely watch a playthrough first. Something like Kascade, Ectogenesis, CAFO, or Woven Web.
Just Saw Joe in Spokane, Washington, on Sept 29th.He STILL Rocks! My Third time seeing Joe Live. Eric Johnson is one of Joe's proteges. Add to that Steve Vai and Kenny Wayne Shepard, and ya ready for this? Does the name Kirk Hammett ring a bell? Lookup Metallica! and many others! Joe was actually in the band Deep Purple, Spinal Tap, and Chickenfoot with Chad Smith from RHCP and Michael Anthony (yeah, THAT Michael.... Van Halen), And the Red Rocker himself, Sammy Hagar!
Hey dudes, you guys are hilarious, man. I think you guys might like “The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie,” by Colter Wall. He grew up on a farm in Canada with his guitar, and he is gritty and talented. This song hits hard, if nothing else, and is fun for all ages and backgrounds. This song is not mainstream yet, tho. It wouldn’t be known to as many of your viewers, tho it does have 20M+ views. Thanks, you guys! It’s great to see y’all stayin up, and thanks for the grade-A fresh content!! Live Performance: m.th-cam.com/video/4l4gdhPqh3E/w-d-xo.html
1988 Joe Satriani had hair, and Surfing with the Alien came out, tap your foot along with a guitar solo, who would have thought!!! it's been a great ride!!!!
On most electric guitars have a pickup that functions via an electromagnet. You produce small electrical outputs from the sting vibrating over the magnets and that is the signal that is read by the Amplifier. It produces the different pitches based on how quickly or slowly the string vibrates over the magnets as all sound is just vibrations
An acoustic electric is basically an acoustic that's amping the sound of the hollow body guitar. An electric guitar is solid with no hollow cavity to resonate the sound. The sound comes directly from the pickups and is passed through an amp through electronics. The pickups are hot and are easy to over drive and get that powerful sound and distortion. Not to mention what you can do with switching pickups and electronic overdrive and distortion pedals. Plus a myriad of other cool effects like flange and compression, digital delay, reverb etc. They use wireless bsttery operated transmitters to wirelessly send the signal to their amps- so no wires to trip on.
Zappa sent Steve Vai to Satriani for lessons. He can play. Personally I'm not a fan of this type of music but I gotta give props to someone this talented.
Incorrect. Steve started his lessons with Joe when they were kids. Zappa hired Steve based on his understanding of music theory and technique. Zappa first hired Steve to transcribe sheet music for his band leading to being Franks main man on stage with guitar. Steve had already been to Berkley Music College before and during his career with Zappa.
I hung out with him one night and he told me he lived in Berkley (CA.) When I told him I lived in New York, he said "oh that's too much reality for me " LOL He was one of the sweetest musicians I've ever met. Also, there are indeed electrified acoustic guitars (as well as basses).
I saw him at the house of blues In Nola years ago, incredible show and so loud I was deaf for a couple days afterwards. Check out Sonny Landreth too he’s a Louisiana guy & the best slide guitar player alive
I understand about 2/3 of what these fellas are saying ... that being said, Satriani is a legend!!!! I have had had the privilege of seeing him live twice, and it was amazing!
Satch has perfected using harmonics and feedback as part of the music. He targets and forces partial mutes, string tension, even position of the pickups relative to the amplifier, to squeeze exactly the right tones he wants out of the instrument. That's how you hear the odd pitches as he plays - he's using what might be unintentional gaffs for other players and actively making them part of his sound. He's incredible.
Joe Satriani is a legend among guitar players. He's old now, but him, Steve Vai, and some others are legendary. His song "Surfing with the Alien" was a huge hit and was even in some games like NASCAR 99.
They should listen to Band of Gypsys - Band of Gypsys, Jimi Hendrix.
He's not old. He's just older.
He was Steve Vai’s guitar teacher in NY.
If he's old he sure doesn't look it! Dude hasn't aged in 30 years!
Steve Vai recently did a song with Polyphia called Ego Death, it's pretty slick

Charging a guitar...LOLOLOLOLOL PRICELESS! Love this channel.
Absolutely awesome guitarist he's in a league of his own got to see him October 6th in Salina Kansas excellent excellent show
Al Di Meola helped both Steve Vai and Joe Satriani get their starts and he's the guy they look up to for good reason!
Al Di Meola's live video of 'Race with the devil on a spanish highway' is a great introduction!
Al Di Meola is a beast on guitar. I was fortunate enough to to see him at a guitar clinic in Tampa years ago.
Always with you, always with me is my hubby’s and I wedding song. ❤️
In my opinion he is the best! he plays with such feeling and being able to phrase his notes and he gets tones and feeling that nobody else can do. I seen him several times on the G3 tour a few years back I saw him with Steve Vai and Neal schon made a surprise visit and it was awesome!
Steve Vai - For The Love Of God - Live with the Holland Metropole Orchestra. Trust me bros, his guitar playing is one of a kind.
React to Ac/Dc back in black next!!! Another legendary rock band
Joe Satriani’s Summer Song is a great driving song. Also check out Steve Vai. Satriani was one of Vai’s guitar teachers. Also check out Tony MacAlpine who often gets forgotten but is an amazing guitarist from the same era.
Joe is a great player played his music for 10 years summer song, friends and two other songs I can’t remember right now great stuff love him
Satch is my fav guitarist of all time and it was very entertaining to see your reaction to that for the first time. Very cool video.
Very influential guitarist Mr. Satch Boogie himself taught Kirk Hammet of Metallica and Steve Vai to play guitar the right. Glad you guys enjoyed it!
Bad Horsie was always one of my favorites
I second that. Grace and Joe do an amazing cover of Neil Young's Cortez the Killer. The best. Love it.
Dude….All Time fave live performance and Im a metalhead/ blues/Classic / pretty much everything but this live with Grâce, the trumpet player , the all band is beyond anything i ever heard on TH-cam
Périod
@@girs666 yeah, I definitely don't know why this isn't talked about more, epic performance.
@@bigchris757 totally agree and mostly because, for an « initiate »/ hasardous hidden jewels on TH-cam it has approx. 6 or 7 now million views!! Imagine if it was viralized ( if i can say( Im french sorry for my englsh) . I watch this performance several times a month and every Time Im blown away, Just now writing and thinking about it gives me goosebumps lol
HELLS YEAH!! Flying in a Blue Dream is a phuggin MASTERPIECE! Great choice!
Just suggested this to you...and bam... he is amazing. have seen live...and still going strong...summer song is my fave..this is second...I dont know anyone else who can play like Joe and make it look easy
Do you have to charge it? That's awesome. One of the funniest things I've heard on TH-cam. And I needed that too, so thank you.
I always play the studio version of Flying In A Blue Dream to someone who's never heard Joe before.
Live version still kills it.
25 years ago, I was in Mexico visiting family. I took a bus from Mexico City to Michoacan, back when it was still kind of safe. I took the night bus. When the sun came up, I was in the Mexican rain forest, listening to this exact song.
His landmark Surfing With the Alien album is a must listen for ANYONE who likes Rock music and badass guitar. This dude is legendary and has been world famous for Decades.
3. The magnets "pick up" those vibrations and send them electrically down a wire to an amp/speaker
4. The amp/speaker (which is plugged into an outlet) converts the electric pulses (vibrations) sent from the guitar into the sound we hear coming from the speakers.
Anyway - glad to have you along for the ride! 🤘🎸
Now do Steve Vai...."For the Love of God" live with the orchestra. Joe Satriani was the guitar teacher of Steve Vai when Steve was a teenager.
"always with me, always with you" , and "surfing with the alien" are really great also👍🏼🔥
You gents are going to have your minds blown if you ever check out Tosin Abasi and his band Animals As Leaders. Definitely watch a playthrough first. Something like Kascade, Ectogenesis, CAFO, or Woven Web.
“ALWAYS WITH YOU, ALWAYS WITH ME” Thank me later ✌🏼
Shinedown-Sound of Madness
Awwwww, The Satch!! He was my first live show in 1993! He was outstanding!
You HAVE to react to Steve Vai "for the love of God" from the G3 concert PLEASE!!!
Alvin Lee - bluest blues . your welcome !
so love that you love it..... thank you...... one of the best besides van halen and yngwie malmsteen... love this dude, always will.
hello from poland i love satriani its the best of the best of the best solo guitar player ever
Satch! Bay Area represent! Flying in a Blue dream. Epic

Great song!
one of the greatest masterpieces.
1988 Joe Satriani had hair, and Surfing with the Alien came out, tap your foot along with a guitar solo, who would have thought!!! it's been a great ride!!!!
Surfin with the aliens is the CUT u want to hear
On most electric guitars have a pickup that functions via an electromagnet. You produce small electrical outputs from the sting vibrating over the magnets and that is the signal that is read by the Amplifier. It produces the different pitches based on how quickly or slowly the string vibrates over the magnets as all sound is just vibrations
Satriani the legend, so glad you got to listen to him. He was magic on that thing.
@@Top-Jimmy that came from Vai's own mouth.
"I sing with my guitar" - BB King
..."Ummm, can I sing opera with my guitar?"
I hung out with him one night and he told me he lived in Berkley (CA.) When I told him I lived in New York, he said "oh that's too much reality for me " LOL He was one of the sweetest musicians I've ever met. Also, there are indeed electrified acoustic guitars (as well as basses).
absolute legend!
Finger pickin great! The master of the whammy bar...Ty guys...
SRV...Texas Flood..................come on guys u will love it
Satch has perfected using harmonics and feedback as part of the music.
About time you check out Tina S - Moonlight sonata
Just saw him last weekend.. awesome concert..
