Sorry if I interrupt the magic, I own the GR, my brother took the GR2, in the same room, same system, same cartridge, we didn't notice much difference, in fact almost nothing......
I really do wish the interviewer would have asked how close to the G do these new improvements bring the GR2 sonically? But the cardboard, look at the "sustainable" cardboard box
Hi sorry you didn’t get an answer to what you were hoping but ……,the GR2 when compared to the GR is sonically much much closer to the G however the G is still a completely different beast. These are significant sonic improvements on what was already a fantastic TT.
I think audiophiles are more likely than other consumers to keep and pass on their boxes and packing material, as we upgrade over time and sell our old units. I keep all of my equipment boxes because I have the room, but I don’t really keep boxes for anything else I buy because I figure I’m going to run everything else into the ground and then trash a broken/outdated unit.
I couldn’t agree more!! I have every single audio product box (plus camera if I’m honest) and I’m pleased to say that the cardboard has stood up to loads of boxing and unboxing whilst being taken around the country in my car boot.
Using something like a Denon 103 can be a struggle to get enough head shell mass (or effective tonearm mass I guess) for proper control of the low compliance cartridge. In my experience, I added head shell weight and the supplied extra counter weight to balance or the sound suffered. I bought the DL-103 not realizing how low compliance it is and it sounded awful (noticeably worse than a N97xE or a AT-VM95ML) until I educated myself and applied the tuning above (yes, with appropriate MC Pre). Thought it was the stylus differences but no, for me it was setup. Also, it's worth mentioning something most reviewers tend to miss - the supplied head shell has a set screw which allows for azimuth adjustment. Mine was noticeably off out of the box and the micro-line cartridge sounded very unbalanced until I dialed in the azimuth. I'm not at all a golden ear but I do actually hear the differences with proper set up given all the cartridge and geometry fussing about for setup. I've since bought a bunch of head shells to experiment and realized after the fact most of the cheap ones do not allow azimuth changes - I encourage buying ones which do allow for azimuth adjustment. Absolutely love the TT. Mine did not come with a 3mm spacer as mentioned by some other reviewers, so again - the 103 needs one. The tonearm on the black model is silver not black - doesn't bother me - maybe just a variation on later shipping models since I bought mine roughly Feb 2024. Copied most of this from other videos since I see this info often missing.
There's a lot of terms being thrown around to make it seem like they've done something crazy, but power supply noise hasn't really been an issue and you can get a power supply upgrade kit for SL1200 turntables for around €80~€90. The delta sigma drive just sounds fancy, but they don't really explain what it does. Coreless motors have been a thing since the 70s and JVC had budget turntables which had these. My L-F71 has a measured W&F of around 0.02%RMS. When making statements that go like: "the benefits are enormous, I can't tell you how huge the difference it makes, it's insane!" it should be backed up with data, especially if the difference is as huge as you make it out to be.
It’s great that you appreciate the value of the power supply upgrade being nearly half of the increase in price that plus the metal finish on the controls. The new Delta Sigma drive smooths out micro vibrations caused by the motor drive circuit (I am not saying that the GR had significant vibrations in fact they are that minute they don’t show on wow and flutter ratios) these two things together do make a significant sonic improvement so absolutely value for money for the end user.
Hi you’ll notice that this has been asked a lot and unfortunately I am not a DJ so we are refraining from giving an opinion. I am sure in the not too distant future a DJ will get their hands on some and put out a review.
Can't wait for the "don't buy a GR2 until you've seen this" video Glad to see Technics saving the planet by using cardboard packaging 😂 The guy immediately points out that the cover is plastic. Im sure their products are made in a factory powered by unicorn farts and shipped around the world by sailboat and peddle powered trucks too. But the cardboard, look at the "sustainable" cardboard box 📦 (Ignore the fact that we've been using plastic and styrofoam for our entire existence as a company) look at this cardboard box 😂
I wish they would re release some of the great auto changers they made in the 80s maybe and updated version? Like the SL1950 for instance, I live in hope.
My takeaways from this video: 1) When you start talking about packaging it really gives the game away that there's not much to be seen here. 2) The internal Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) in both the G and GR has always been a weak point of the design, but SMPS's keep manufacturing costs down. On the GR2 they've simply paid more attention to the issues caused by the SMPS -- vibrations and stray noise -- for which there is plenty of technology out there (especially from the medical and scientific fields) that they can rebrand as new and revolutionary. 3) Would be interested to hear how they managed on this upgrade, but would be surprised if it beats an exterior chassis for a toroidal transformer with umbilical linear PSU (off the shelf upgrades can be bought, but this can also be diy'ed). 4) Good news is that the GR mk1 is being reduced. I would expect the SL-1200G (which has exactly the same SMPS in it as the GR1) will get an upgrade soon, at which point we'll also learn about how noisy the PSU was... :)
The G has EXACTLY the same SMPS in it as the GR, the one which Technics now admits caused unwanted internal noise and vibration. You can soon expect there to be a G mk2, at which point Kevin will be back here telling you how significantly better it is! Alternatively, look out for good deal on the "old" GR, upgrade the PSU to a linear type and the tonearm too (the PSU and tonearms are the weak links of both the G and GR), and it'll be cheaper and sound better.
Oh these two guys :D I hope that technics didn’t think “oh shot we can’t produce Gr at the same price we need to price hike so let’s just put 2 at end and produce a cheaper TT for higher price”. From all the talk mentioned here didn’t hear anything crucial that makes it better….
The silent power supply is a huge benefit plus the additional noise cancelling then you have the Delta Sigma drive removing micro vibrations not to mention the cosmetic improvements. A price increase would be simple by just adding inflation. Pop down and blind test them when the GR2 is available.
@@kevinwalker8639 the problem is they didn’t specify if it’s linear and we know that their new amps are class d…. So sounds like it a PWM supply with noise cancellation.

The internal components of the turntable... does it have chips😵💫SMDs 🥶that have short life🤔or the internal components are passive that will last 30+ years?😉

Interesting that most people are missing the point that this is a Hifi turntable.
SL1200 mk7 and SL1200GR.
Please!advise me which one is better. Thanks
Hi there, the MK7 is more of an advanced DJ turntable, the GR is intended for Hifi playback, although you can still scratch on it if you know how!
@hi-ficorner thanks
I use one AT LP120USB but feeling to upgrade to Technics 1200GR2. How much improvement I can expect?
A lot!!
...but will there be an SL-1200G2?
Good question
My question too
When does the SL-1200G2 get released?
why? changing perfection? The Japanese ones went up in price so maybe they will now move from Malaysia to Indonesia and sell it as an upgrade? The indonesian coconut oil really smooths out the highs.
How do you put the platter on, I can’t get it on, the screws just keep spinning and spinning
Hi what TT do you have?
The platter uses a magnet there are no screws when putting the Mk7, 100C, 1500C,GR or GR2 together.
I for one, very much appreciated this discussion. I’ve been set on the 1200g…..
The gr2 looks pretty good and probably better on its own than anything we ran in the 70’s.
I’ll probably get the gr2 with an OM-Black MM cartridge and doubt I’ll be able to discern any difference with the g.
Thanks!
Still no upgrade to the tonearm lift? It's probably the only thing I dislike about my GR.
I hope that the mark 3 has balanced outputs. Although, I'm am still extremely interested.
Unlikely to be honest, lets wait and see
What s differ from the latest sl1210 mk7
So the GR2 has this new technology but the flagship G over the double the price doesn't?
I'm really tempted to pick up a pair.
Give us a shout I’m sure we can help :)
When will the SL1200G2 come out ?
Is the GR2 suitable for DJing (given that the GR was repeatedly claimed not to be so)?
I have a pair that I use with Rekordbox DVS, so yes.
@@djsubculture2111 Actually DVS' resolve all sync issues independently of the turntable. My question is whether GR2 suitable for conventional DJing, namely using standard vinyls.
I hopeTechnics give the Dj's something more sturdier than that hollow MK7.
I’m shocked no one has brought a full rubber base to market for the mk7. I would buy 2 instantly
The MK7 should never have been made.
What about the G2 model??
I have every single audio product box (plus camera if I’m honest) and I’m pleased to say that the cardboard has stood up to loads of boxing and unboxing whilst being taken around the country in my car boot.
so the next question would be, when is the 1200G-2 coming out?
Hmm. Does the significantly more expensive SL 1210GAE already include this anti-vibration technology?
Hi when the GAE was produced this technology didn’t exist so it would not have been possible to even consider it.
@@kevinwalker8639 And despite that, does the GAE sound better?
When can we expect the 1200 G2 release?
Is it possible to deejay on them?
Hi you’ll notice that this has been asked a lot and unfortunately I am not a DJ so we are refraining from giving an opinion. I am sure in the not too distant future a DJ will get their hands on some and put out a review.
I wish Technics would bring back the EPC-205Cmk3 cartridge or an equivalent new model.
Me too! All they miss now is proper cartridge for their Grand Series Turntables. And I wish it would be EPC-205Cmk5.
Thanks for the feedback I’m happy to feed this up.
Make a turntable with the options to change from Digital Pitch and Analog Pitch Control
I will stick to my japanese SL-1210GR ❤
These new decks are made in Malaysia?
@@AceTechHD ALL current technics models are made in malaysia.
The Japan decks were made at 2-2 Hiraidekogyodanchi, Utsunomiya, Tochigi
MK II STILL THE WINNER to DJ
Mk5 is better. Many improvements and still analogue
I have a Rega P3 and a gr. The Rega puts it in the shade. The Technics is good. The P3 is great. The difference isn’t subtle.
Tremendous! Enjoy your music..
Can't wait for the "don't buy a GR2 until you've seen this" video
Glad to see Technics saving the planet by using cardboard packaging 😂
The guy immediately points out that the cover is plastic.
Im sure their products are made in a factory powered by unicorn farts and shipped around the world by sailboat and peddle powered trucks too.
But the cardboard, look at the "sustainable" cardboard box 📦
(Ignore the fact that we've been using plastic and styrofoam for our entire existence as a company) look at this cardboard box 😂
yup its beeyond absurd. The plus is total dum dums are starting to realize this its all become so absurd.
I wish they would re release some of the great auto changers they made in the 80s maybe and updated version? Like the SL1950 for instance, I live in hope.
My takeaways from this video:
1) When you start talking about packaging it really gives the game away that there's not much to be seen here.
:)
Glad to see that not all are fooled.
Just bought a pair. Now I wait. So excited. Now I'm selling my 50th Anniversary pair in beige.
I’m about to pull the trigger on a SL-1200G, should I wait? Do these upgrades bring it all that much closer to the G? Love the price, can’t beat that.
In all honesty if I was about to buy a G I would carry on with my plan to buy a G.
@@kevinwalker8639 As would I.
This does not come close to a sl-1200G .
That is the question!!!
Oh these two guys :D
I hope that technics didn’t think “oh shot we can’t produce Gr at the same price we need to price hike so let’s just put 2 at end and produce a cheaper TT for higher price”.
@@kevinwalker8639
So they're admitting all their other power supplies are noisy and all their other turntables suffer from vibration issues?
@@kevinwalker8639 the problem is they didn’t specify if it’s linear and we know that their new amps are class d…. So sounds like it a PWM supply with noise cancellation.
@@crazyprayingmantis5596nope what we are saying is with the evolution of technology we have been able to make further improvements on an already excellent product.
@@sats87Technics amps are not Class D they are all fully digital. We are working on some detailed explanations that we can share for those that are interested.
Why would you care about polystyrene? The packing materials are to be KEPT, not thrown out. So silly, dudes. Turn in your man-cards.
So you spent 4-mins talking about the box. Good job?
Generation 4 development successful finished 💯% the best turntable 2024 definitely in black 👍💪❤️
For DJ use? have they fixed the weird pitch response that the original GR had which made it useless for professional dj use
I have a pair of 1210GRs, no weird pitch response here.
I own a pair of GRs and can confirm the pitch is far from accurate. It seems to jump in discrete increments, not even close to the mk2/mk5's pitch accuracy.
I sure hope the cuing lever build and feel has been refined on the gr2. I hope to see a g2 next.
True even on GR1 it doesn't feel too well....
Seems black has changed for Grey let's see if it's only color.

When your product has changed so little that you grasp for straws trying to hype it up. Hilarious😆
Sorry that’s how it comes across the TT technology enhancements are huge and give the end user significant sonic improvements over the GR and yeah I know it’s a cardboard box but it’s kind of a big deal for us.
🤣
Disappointing that Technics seems to have gone cheap on build quality and quality control compared to the MK2s. Seeing many reviews pointing out issues and yet you have MK2s that have been perfect from new and still running great years later!
'Everything is silver apart from the VTA ring' the SL-1200G has a silver VTA ring.
Is this home shopping network?
It’s our retail shop TH-cam channel
The black models should come with a dark tinted cover
Absolutely not.
We don’t do this because most people want to see through it but the GR2 black is now all black so the buttons switches and tonearm are now black.
@@kevinwalker8639 Similar style to a SL-1210 MK7., nothing new. It would be refreshing to see Technics actually change something on the top plate layout, but they won’t because that will cost extra $.
Wish the 1210 GR would come w/ a brass anodized tonearm like the 50th anniversary editions.
No thank you.
The most important bit about the box(s) is the safety of the product, not my health.
I shall wait for the G2 or whatever they end up calling it if not GAE2 ... or whatever next limited edition will be.
Not sure why you drop comments on the upgrade like: "insane" and "I don't believe you", next to adults behaving childish, this is a rather confusing review!
Beardstroker heaven, will the average ear notice the difference? I'd rather an accessible network of service and upgrade centres, that would be way more "Sustainable"...
