- In DEATH OF ROBERT THE BRUCE: This day in Scottish History. Scotlands Outlaw King Scottish history tour guides Bruce Fummey commemorates the death of one of the great men from Scotlands past: our warrior king Robert the Bruce. In this Robert the Bruce story, he traces the last journey of Scotlands outlaw king from his home, to his resting place at Dunfermline Abbey. The Robert the Bruce death must be one of the key dates in Scottish history. After all he had done to establish his family and the position of Scotland it was time for the final judgement.

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As one of Scotland history tour guides people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation of your from the US. So from April 2020 I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.
Tales from Scotlands History DEATH OF ROBERT THE BRUCE: This day in Scottish History. Scotlands Outlaw King men from scotlands past
Being an “American”, I love your videos. You are the man Bruce. I’ve learned more about Scotland (and England) in my 56 years of life by watching you than i ever learned in any history lesson. The way you tell the story as well as show these wonderful historic places. It really kind of puts you right there at that time of when all of these events happened.
Hear, Hear. I echo your sentiments. I'm an American of German-Polish heritage, but Bruce has a way of making everybody proud to be Scottish, whether or not they are
This presentation is pure poetry, delivered in the voice of the poet. When the voice goes soft, and speaks directly to the future heroic leader, the blood responds. Well done, Bruce!
I’v heard people say you die two deaths. One when your body dies and then your soul when your name is uttered for the last time by a living person. If that is the case Robert the Bruce will live forever.
This one was nicely done Bruce. 👍
I got a wee bit emotional watching this. I think there's a lot of people who cant see past the whole Bannockburn/freedom angle but what he did, and what he gave this country was so much more important than that. It might feel to some as though over history in the long run Bruce's achievements actually don't amount to much beyond the millitary victories, since Scotland eventually ended up being unified with England to create the UK anyway. But if it hadn't been for the Bruce, Scotlands culture and very identity would have died out in the 14th century and everything that has and still makes us unique would have been lost to history. Even The United Kingdom itself, however you may feel about that, would not exist today as we know it. Because of Robert the Bruce, Scotland got a further 400 years of national and cultural development. It made an undeniable mark on the world and continues to do so. It's people have retained their national identity, it's flag still fly's proudly, and it retains it's own laws and customs. All of that because of the actions of this one man and his loyal followers. As far as i'm concerned he has earned his place in history a thousand times over, and i wouldn't sell for any amount of money.
@Hoa Tattis haha get a grip of yourself, Wallace done nothing really in comparison to Robert or Andrew., Sterling Bridge wasn't even Wallace's battle plan, It was Andrew De Moray's. Andrew died shortly after battle is only reason Wallace gets all the credit. You have been watching to much Braveheart. Pathetic actualy as Wallace was just as brutal as anybody. Have you ever even read anything we know for a fact about Wallace except Braveheart? Which was a name given to Robert' 😂 I guess not LOL My Surname is Wallace but even that can't make me biased towards Wallace. Braveheart has a lot to answer for since in reality Robert supported Wallace. No doubt Wallace never deserved a traitors death and will always be remembered but in reality he was just as brutal as anybody. Btw I'm a Scot from Ayrshire...
@Hoa Tattis They where traitors, They tried to get Robert arrested in London which he escaped, They grassed him up to Edward about his intentions to free his Country. To me they where worse, A bunch of grasses 😂 It's James Douglas and even he supported our greatest warrior King Robert The Bruce 👍
@Hoa Tattis His Mother was Gaelic and his father was Norman, This Robert The Bruce was different from all his Ancestors before him. He didn't care about Scots but he gave up all his huge estates in England and lost practily all his brothers and Family to free Scotland so you make no sense??? He was a Scot born in Turnberry Castle about 20mins drive from where I live. Because of Robert The Bruce Scotland was completely Independent for another 400 years so we kept our Culture, Without him all that would have been lost and Scotland today would be a completely different Country. The Comyns and allies MacDougall's ect slaughtered a lot of Scots who where trying to free Scotland with The Bruce. They got what they deserved, I heard nothing grew for years in Comyns Ancestral land and allied Clans Land. They deserved it. Aye maybe he defended Carlisle from the Scots but he had a hell of a lot to lose with all his land in England and he obviously didn't think it was time to try take Scotland back since the Nobles couldn't agree on the colour of shite 👍😂
@Hoa Tattis enuff said over and out!!! ALBA Gu Bràth 🏴🏴
@Hoa Tattis @Hoa Tattis He didn't have leprosy, his Enemy's made that up. Just so you know Norman's where Vikings. They got Normandy for free to live on to stop them attacking other parts of Modern day France but still that wasn't enough they wanted Modern Day Scotland and England. In Scotland we wiped them out of the British isles and other parts of Scotland. You should read a good history book in this time period, there's much more to it all than I think you realise? RIP Sir William Wallace, RIP King Robert The Bruce. Alba Gu Bràth (Scotland Forever) 🏴👍
A gorgeous tribute. Keep your Arthur, your Sun King, your Henry V, and your Charlemagne. The Bruce filled the role of 'King' above all others. How many that we exalt today as the ideal King could have endured tribulations of fortune like his and never waver.
Up there with King David of Israel.
Aye, lad!
Hi Bruce! My 17th great grandfather, Sir James Douglas, carried the heart of King Robert the Bruce into battle with him in the Crusades. He would be so proud of you for the work you have done. God Bless!
My ancestors where clan douglas aswell
Nice to meet you, cousin!@@michaelmorton6566
Where is my 19th Great Grandfathers heart now?
Also here from Clan Douglas 💙🏴🏴
@@coranova Well, hello cousin!🤩
Hi Bruce I live in Spain and every year in a village about 45 mins from me they celebrate James Douglas or Black Douglas as he was known
He freed Teba from the Moors while carrying the heart of Robert the Bruce on his way to the holy lands
I know. I have a mate that's been over for that. I'd love to go and make a video when that's on after the whole Rhona virus crap is finished
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Hay, if you can after this virus crap is finished, come to Fraser's Ridge in North Carolina here in the U.S. when they have the highlander games and do a video on it.
Only known as the Black Douglas to the Sassenach 😉
@@jcusack3494 aye and shows how much our history is ''his'' story and not ours . He was a hero in Scotland and only called ''Black'' Douglas by his enemies for bringing darkness to their souls by use of terror . When will we see his likes again ? ;]
“Jamais arriere” /Never Behind.
Very different in style and presentation than most of your work,Bruce, but satisfying in a different way. Deeper, emotional and more thoughtful perhaps than your usual output but shows your versatility. I can't recommend your channel strongly enough.
Keep producing quality 👌
This reminded me of the first time I came across Robert de Bruce. I loved stories of William Wallace, so much so that I railed against the movie Braveheart. I still do. I became fixated on the story of Wallace when I played Age of Empires 2 for the first time. Then came the fateful day that I was wandering around my middle school library, relishing a little bit of peace and quiet. I found a box of old books that the library was giving away, seeing that they didn't get much love anymore. In it, I found a little green book simply titled "Robert De Bruce". Intrigued by this little old book, published in 1920, I opened it up. I instantly fell in love with the stories of the liberator of Scotland. It was a heroic and tragic tale. The book was quickly adopted by me, and I read the story of the Beggar King again and again, until I loved the little book to death.
Am from aberdeen and been watching your videos for a good while now, just watched this video and it truly made me cry, absolutely beautiful mate, brilliantly written and so powerful. Thank you for this video. 💖
Wow, thank you
Wow. You brought Tears to my eyes. I felt everything in this Beautiful Video. Absolute Thank You. Im a New Zealander with Scottish ancestry. God Bless Scotland's Greatest King
Absolutely brilliant, heartfelt and very moving.
Thanks James. I really appreciate that. I wanted this to be a wee bit special. Please like, share and spread the word. I'd love to get this out to as many people as possible this weekend.
I am an American and watching your videos about Scotland has brought some of my ancestors alive to me as I learn more about Scotland. Robert the Bruce was one of my ancestors which I learned about due to my sister working on our genealogy for the last 45-50 years.
Very Moving! I've been to Scotland four times and I am intrigued by it's history more than any other country than my own (USA). Please keep producing these magnificent videos. Thank you Bruce!
We forget in Scotland how old and long our history is just last weekend I was in St Andrews and sat down at the old cathedral to have a drink of juice and a rest. Then I thought no wonder Americans are so amazed with these places people have sat on this spot for a wee rest and a drink for centuries before America was even discovered never mind a country. There's Roman bath house ruins just a 2 minute walk from my house that's going back even further to biblical times we really do forget how ancient our country is. There's definitely something cool about still having alot of it still along side our modern world, glad you enjoy Scotland !
The Heart of the Bruce is in my Logan clan crest . We are of the original Braveheart clan.
You made me proud in a way that I have never experienced before. Thanks.
Was happy to find out we're some of his MANY descendants, :-). Thank-you.
I got a bit tearful at the beauty of the poetry and the sacrifice of the man. Well done Bruce.
"Will We No Sae Your Like Agin?"
Beautiful Eulogy my friend.
Grant unto him eternal rest O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him - Amen
Beautiful, I
love how you wax so poetic. Thank you!
No maam, thank you for taking the time to watch
I got emotional and my heart fill of sadness. I love king Robert Bruce, my 14th grandfather. He was very brave. I thank him for his efforts to free his people.
My ancestor also💖🙏
Thanks again, Bruce. You are educating me in Scottish history; which is not taught outside of Scotland!!
That's what I'm here for
I get the impression that Scottish history is not that well taught in Scotland, this is where you're doing the nation a service, Bruce!
I love how you make history so personal! We memorize facts and dates and names and battles, but you bring everything to life. Al the way down to individual lives. ❤🏴
Really does make the heart glow! I'm overwhelming proud to be a Scot and walk the land that we fiercely love and will continue to protect.
Much love for both Bruces💙🏴 here from Clan Douglass
It was only one or two years ago that my cousin and I discovered, via genealogical records, that Robert the Bruce is our 23rd great-grandfather, via his daughter Marjorie. I am grateful for your videos which draw me closer to him. I plan a pilgrimage to Scotland in the near future to pay my respects to my newly discovered family.
Greetings from Vancouver Canada. I do name and genealogical research on my family name, Hetherington. Judging from the number of Andrews, Johnstons and Roberts in my tree I suspect my Scot Irish line hailed from the Scottish side of the borders. I found the border reiver "stories" particularly interesting. Keep up the good work.
Absolutely legend in my book. The scotland is better for him . Great upload as always Bruce .
Bruce, absolutely love your videos....thanks for delivering these fantastic insight, hope there are many more.
Robert the Bruce, a great and visionary, enabled the Scots to preserve their history, culture and identity (I love the legend of his idea related to the spider web). Neither Edward, nor many after him who tried otherwise, failed to nullify his legacy. Not even Culloden who was supposed to erase the pride of the Scots forever. I deeply respect the Scots and their pride and honor. Thank you for a great job!
Alba gu bràth ! With love from Croatia.
First, I know very little about Scottish history. I only in the last several years found I am of Scottish decent. Then I am able to trace my family back to Sir Symon Locard (Lockhart) who is the knight who held the key to the box that contained the heart of Robert the Bruce going to the Crusades. Even just starting to learn about Scottish heritage, this video made me so emotional. I look forward to learning so much more.
Wonderful, video it is a terrible shame his tomb was destroyed by vandals during the reformation. He saved the Nation of Scotland. My grandma told me the story of The Bruce and the Spider as a young child in the Early 1960s. It has inspired me through a recovery through a severe spinal injury to fight it and through the loss of my loving wife who was the finest woman I have ever met. She wasn't perfect but she was perfect for me and that in the end was what matters.
I don't know if the Spider story is true, but it should be. It is inspiring. At isn't that what heroes are for to inspire those that follow. I grew up in the Virginia Highlands originally, though I now live in South Carolina. I really enjoy your videos and I learn a lot from you and your enthusiasm for the History of your Nation really comes through
Wow just WOW. Will be watching this again. You are the Man!
Fantastic Bruce, Facts, figures, emotions, unbiased 👍
You are a gifted story teller! Thank you.
Bruce that was fabulous. Moving and challenging. I am a buyer, no selling out.
Thankyou!
You're welcome!
Tear in the eye. Thank you.
What a great story teller you are Bruce. I just got a flashback when you walked in front of our statue of the Bruce at Bannockburn. First time my primary school took me there. I was blown away by it. I had to buy the largest poster from the see souvenir shoap! It was there for years. Until I got older and replaced it with a life size Blondie poster.
Beautifully done! Thank you.
thanks for this i am Scottish but there was a few things i didn't know, you orate the story very well, i have to say that i am a buyer and will raise a glass to Bruce
Much love to our fellow brothers and sisters in Scotland .. Love and much respect from Australia XX
...and in return
I'm a buyer. Bruce will always be one of the greatest kings in history!
Wow! I've watched, and enjoyed all of your videos and I've been a subscriber for quite a while now. This by far, is the best yet! It also makes me wonder if, somewhere down the road of history, another Bruce might be remembered by his fellow Countrymen for his pride in and love of his Country? Someone who taught us all a little more about Scottish history by telling the world his stories. Thanks for each and every one, Bruce Fummey.
Cheers Christian
Poetic and beautiful and tragic.
Very moving, we feel your passion !!
In my heart . In my opinion . This is your best . Thank you . This made me pause . Made me feel . Life . Liberty. Friendships. Betrayal . Love . Thank you for telling his story .
Thank you for sharing your beautiful videos. I am visiting Scotland this December from Virginia for the first time. 😎
What a beautiful tribute

A story beautifully and poignantly told.
I buy!🏴 My father was named after The Bruce!🏴 Scotland Forever!!🏴
Very moving. Thank you0
This video tugged at my heart. Thank you
I do not even know how to tell how this hit me. I really can`t put it in words. But I think that words cannot truly explain my feelins right now. So I will just say thank you for this post Bruce Fummey. And thank you Robert Bruce for taking the country of my forefathers and making it a country of it`s own. Scotland, governed by Scots and free forever. Right now it is part of the U.K. and I personally don`t like that, but it is so by choice, not occupation or under the thumb of England. I cannot say that I am Scottish, because I was born in America and this is my home always, and the best country in the world. But My name and my blood is Scottish, and I will never forget that. I am proud of that as well. The heart of a Scot is the heart of a warrior. ceud mile failte.
I have visited Scotland once about 15 years ago, and I plan to go back again soon. I am one of those descendants of Robert the Bruce too (unless Family Search is lying to me😆). Thank you for the tour in this video. M from the USA 🏴 🇺🇲

@@ScotlandHistoryTours I've been living in Germany for the past 40 years . My brothers and sisters still live in the central belt. Sometimes it's hard to take being gone so long .that's why these great visions are so important Many thanks for that .
I particularly liked the way you included views of the places you mentioned, especially Cambuskenneth Abbey. It is so close to Sterling, which I have visited several times, yet I have never turned off the mile or so to see the abbey ruins.
Got wee teary eyed wae this. It's almost like a letter of thanks to an old king of an old world from our generation. Thanking him for his sacrifices and his deeds to free Scotland so we can have an identity.
I have named by yet to be born son Bruce, in his memory. So, his legacy lives on even 700 years after his death.
May you find peace in your rest, my king. May the Lord above grant you penance for your sins to your fellow man and welcome you into the fortitude of his eternal kingdom to await the resurrection.
I’m not crying… you’re crying!
Now to go listen to my copy of “Flower of Scotland” by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.

Wow I have watched many of your videos Bruce, I even designed a tartan for you, however I must say I really like the way you narrated this video, it is a much more serious & somber tone. It really makes the story hit differently.
Thanks 👍
a buyer ! I enjoyed this video very much. I like the way you presented it. I really enjoyed the part in the video where you narrated in an "undertone". it added so much to the video. thank you for the honorable mention of my direct ancestor's brother William. thank you, Bruce.
I love the way you tell the story, very lyric, I enjoyed very much, thank you.
This was outstanding to watch! Thank you for a fantastic video sir!
Very welcome
Another excellent video. Lets hope we can be celebrating our renewed independence before long.
Aye, but let's try it without fighting
@@ScotlandHistoryTours We would be the first nation in human history to gain independence peacefully. That would be a great accolade.
Liked this a lot, I can't imagine desecrating anyone's tomb or headstone. Hope I can vist your Country one day to see it's beautiful scenery and architecture in person. Till then I'll enjoy my subscription to your channel.
You do that Lem. Thanks
What a really beautiful video! Thank you. As stock of the Bruce family via Randolph’s, I have to say that this generation of stock is very proud of what the Bruce did for Scottish independence. It couldn’t have been an easy job. But one thing I do have to say is that the penance would be that many of his descendants do not live to see old age. They usually burn out by 55.
Well, for your channel I'm a buyer. Subscribed! Always nice to see a man who knows how to tell a story. Is there anything more important, more influential in the world than a good and well-told story? Not in my book. Keep up the good work!!
Guid lad Drew
I'm an American with absolutely no Scottish DNA in my ancestry. Still, part of me wishes there was. I'm enjoying learning Scottish history told through your stories.
Brilliant
Great vid ..I'd love to see you do one on the Douglases .James Douglas was always my childhood hero ...I remember reading a kids story where a mother in Roxbourgh castle was trying to reassure her kids that the Black Douglas wouldnae harm them just as he and a few soldiiers climbed over the walls and said "I wouldnae be sae sure o that!"
I know, I know
I can still hear my mother warn us wee ones. Sleep or the black Douglas will come
What to say ? Other than brilliantly presented. As much as I have removed myself from the stock market, I'm a buyer ......
Yay girl, buy, buy, buy!
This was a supberb video on our hero king well put together and excellently presented I loved this thanks for the work you put into producing this well done 👍
Thank you sir
Eventhough I am 6% Scottish I feel connected so much to the history the land and the people. Scotland is rich in history and heroes. King Bruce was a great example of a people's hero forever and always. He cared about his people and was sholder to sholder with them till the end. I am proud of my Scottish heritage and will always be.
Wonderful, spellbinding and moving and once again bring the past to life in your unique way. Great work.
As an Englishman may I say how I admire the 'Bruce' he was a man who gave everything for his country and didn't separate himself from the common man!
@Hoa Tattis can't argue with anything you say Hoa! Such was the brutality of that age! And it would have to be a very strong/pitiless individual who could rise to the head of the 'clans'.
History is littered with examples of possibly the wrong person gaining the crown, an example being Henry 7th founder of the Tudor line, his claim to the throne was tenuous to say the least and Richard 111, his predecessor, possibly butchered his own nephews (the rightful heirs) on his way to the crown. But in regards to the Bruce, I do take your point! We tend only to remember the winners!
@Hoa Tattis As did so many Scottish nobles Hoa.
I'm descended from 'Clan Mackenzie' and reading about their early history, well they were certainly 'up to tricks' at one time or another! At least the two protagonists -Bruce and Comyn- decided the issue in a personal duel at the end. There certainly was some 'bad blood' between them. They were probably as bad as each other, truth be told.
@Hoa Tattis hi again Hao. Well if that was the case, then the truth is more brutal than what is portrayed in film etc. I wonder, if Comyn had slain the Bruce could he have galvanised the clans and achieved what the Bruce did for Scottish independence?
@Hoa Tattis sheesh and we thought the Mexican cartels were bad. Like the old adage : history is written by the winners!
Robert the Bruce got my respect as a child, when I read the old Ladybird books' telling of his story, which as I recall was a pretty fair account. Your videos are adding even more to his and others' stories.
Just ... WOW!
Heartfelt and true. “Breathes there the man with soul so dead, who never to himself hath said - this is my own, my native land.... “
As a rookie to Scottish history I truly respect your romance for the country and it’s people. I hope King Robert found the easy way out for his regrets, which is Christ and his payment for our sins. He truly led a historic life and got it right in the end.
Thank you for teaching me so much
His his grandfather ( Robert de Bruce) arrived with William the conqueror who defeated the English in 1066, he was a Norman French Knight, but Robert de Bruce father married into the Scottish royal family born in Turnberry ❤
Ask yourself how old that would make his gradnad. In fact his grandad was Bruce the Competitor. His 4X great grandad came from Normandy with David I under the reign of Henry I in England. I filmed the place they came from in this video th-cam.com/video/soyWKL4Hxc0/w-d-xo.html

A very moving story great
Absolute BUYER!!! I'm really enjoying all of your videos. Yes, another American who loves Scotland. However, I've taken the opportunity to visit and have walked many of the grounds you've featured. Like many Americans, I've deep roots in Scotland. Mine extend from both paternal & maternal sides. Pre-eminently my mothers Father was Bruce Sandlin (Sandilands of Calder, prior to ancestral immigration) tying back to King Robert through Princess Jean Stewart dau. of King Robert II. My surname ancestors spent 5-6 generations in primarily Galloway, Saxons who left what is modern day Turon, Poland before moving on to America in the late 17th century. Your video regarding the Forgotten Kings struck a strong chord as well. My Fathers maternal Grandmother was a Duff and I've traced the lineage back to the Duffs of Banffshire (who also later married into the Norman Kings bloodline). I'd like to believe there are deeper ties to those early Gaelic Kings but documentation is sketchy at best. Regardless, Scots blood runs in my veins and to echo your sentiments from the "Should Black People Talk..." the sound of the pipes, the utter beauty of the highlands, undying support for Scotland Natl. Rugby (I've the old school collared long sleeve w/ the St. Andrews cross jersey!), the solemnity of the Moors of Culloden, are all triggers to me! The History of Scotland is MY history too and I'm proud to share it with one who obviously holds it in such high regard! Thank You for such wonderful presentations.
very moving video that fills me with pride and promise of a better future for us all if we could only as people find some of the courage and belief the Bruce had
Thank you I enjoyed this. I find masel coming back to your videos tae learn discover and rediscover. Much appreciated 🙏
Wonderful!
Just brilliant..thanks x

So interesting. I hope to visit in the not too distant future. I am a descendant of Robert's son David. It took a while to research but it's authentic and I feel proud to know the story of his life.
Ah Bruce, your humour was nearly wrangles fae ye there. As usual I loved your videos and I always learn more and more. You re-balance my ignorance and an awakening occurs of my Scots past. You have given me wee points on the map to visit on my motorbike, not too far from Ayrshire that I may visit. It gets me away from the wife nagging about the bairns safety at Transmit. Thanks again(genuinely). I've bought you a wee coffee as a thanks. It is now an ambition to meet you in person and buy you a coffee......and maybe a scone as well.....from a tight arsed Scot, that's sure to be a compliment.
