The thing that I love about Donna is that she shows how to use the basic equipment. Most show's show you all of the fancy stuff that you have to buy. But with Donna it is a basic pencil, and you can use the special ruler, or here is how you use the regular rule that everyone owns. I really respect that about her. Thank you so much for making quilting more affordable, and accessible

i ALMOST discarded this pattern from consideration until I saw that you constructed the scraps into a border piece and incorporated it into the backing. Without these two additional steps in the process, I think the pattern is somewhat wasteful of fabric. A black mark in my book. You saved the day and the quilt is drop dead gorgeous!
That said, I almost always choose fabric before I settle on a pattern choice. Once I have "shopped" my stash, I take a stack of potential fabric candidates to my pattern collection and make a gigantic mess on my worktable of pictures and fabrics, trying to choose the perfect pair. I often run back and forth to my fabric crates and bring out even more candidates. I lose track of time and have a glorious good time.

    • @Rhodeygirl
      @Rhodeygirl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yes to shopping the stash! Also, yes, this pattern has way too much waste. The designers were trying way too hard to use jelly rolls when maybe charms or just yardage would have been a better fit.

Most of the time, I fall in love with a fabric and then figure out a pattern that will work with it. Sometimes I'll find a pattern I love and get fabric to go with it, but that happens way less often.

I am going to repeat a lot of the same comments. I love that you don’t have to buy more accessories to make a featured quilt and can use what I have. Donna you are wonderful in this aspect! I frequently am attracted to quilt patterns and then will find material to make that quilt. What I love about Donna is that she picks colors that I would not have considered and they come out great. I also like that she posts customer made quilts of her patterns that frequently use additional color options. I also like that she finds ways to incorporate scraps to avoid wasted material. I am frequently now also looking at my scraps and using them in the original quilt design. You have a great channel and I always “do all the things” to let you tube know that I appreciate your content!

I’m currently at 0.33 seconds and you hit the nail on the head as my grandma would have said! I will at times pick up usually a Jelly Roll or maybe even a Charm Pack that’s irresistible and On Sale. I use your videos as inspiration because in my humble opinion, I always prefer your color choices verses the one on the quilt pattern. I’m a well seasoned quilter, often making quilts without using patterns. BUT, I would garnish at least a C- of less for being able to visualize a quilt pattern in fabrics other than what is on the pattern.
You are truly inspiring in so many ways. Also, I’m a huge fan of family owned businesses. I’ve ordered from Jordan Fabrics and once I needed assistance with my order. I even wrote a note of thanks as the person who assisted me was beyond wonderful. I’m a retired registered nurse who practiced for 53 years. Six of them were at a Family Practice. Therefore, I’m aware of the importance of excellent telephone skills and you’re employee garnered my appreciation of her phone skills. So, on to watching this video!

I love watching Donna. Ive learned so much from her and I appreciate how she takes time to explain the important details and she doesn’t recommend a new tool every time she makes a video. Ive purchased a lot of cozy quilt patterns from Jordan Fabrics and never saw one of their patterns that wasted a lot of fabric. Donna saved the pattern by finding a way to utilize all that waste which I’m glad of, because let’s face it, fabric is super expensive. Thanks Donna!

I can confirm, I made a double wedding ring quilt for some dear friends of mine following Donna Jordans tutorial and it turned out great!! To add a more complex look without having to piece each ring out of the tiny wedges, I cut my fabric for the rings into strips and then made strip sets out of them. One of yellow fabrics and one of purple... their wedding colors. I used the template Donna Jordan used to cut the rings out of the strip sets, and it turned out great!! Much easier than piecing together tiny little wedges, while making it look like i really spent a lot of time on it... They loved it!!

I laugh at myself today, after having found Donna and her videos! I made a queen quilt using ALL half square triangles and didn't know about sewing a quarter inch on both sides of the diagonal line! I ended up with enough 1/2 square triangles to make a wall hanging, 2 pillows and a table runner! Thank you Donna for setting me straight!

I like this quilt and the colors. I usually buy fabric first then look for a pattern. My dream quilting class would take place in a store like yours where the objective is for students to select fabrics for specific patterns and then receive feedback and guidance. I really enjoy watching Matt choose fabric. He explains his choices.

I usually pick the pattern before the fabric. Usually the only exception is when I find holiday fabric I love. Then I’ll pick the fabric and find a pattern that would look best with the fabric. Thanks for all of your videos! I love the inspiration and how easy you make it, even the most difficult looking patterns.

First I want to live in your shipping department! Seeing all the colors would make my day.
I tend to pick a pattern based on pre-cuts. I am not very experienced and despite my best efforts to be a careful cutter, I am not as accurate as I want. For me the pre-cuts take away a lot of that frustration. I have been watching Donna make quilts for awhile and have learned so much. Eventually I will tackle a more complicated project but right now I am very content to concentrate on making projects using pre-cuts. Thank you.

I LOVE fabric! 🥰 so most of the time I find a pattern for that perfect fabric I fell in love with. This pattern is not one that I would have ever chosen to make from the pattern itself (I find this to be true frequently) but Donna does such a great job with colors and, like this pattern, improves on a design to make a fabulous finished quilt! Love the white, I think it makes the whole quilt pop! And the pieced borders are fantastic. Anything that can help cut down on waste or just scraps I hate to throw away. 😁

  • @anitajonsson4379

Donna, I just love how your Rock Star quilt turned out. I really think deciding to 1) use the white-on-white material as the main background, 2) dividing the outside border in half and then inserting a patched strip made out of left over material into the middle of the outside border, and finally 3) choosing the very pretty backing and then inserting another strip of patched pieces from the quilt ... were all decision that were truly inspired. The orginal quilt pattern, jellyroll fabric, and the two solid backgroud fabric selected were vibrant and coordinated beautifully. I was, however, excited and and relieved that you brilliantly intervened with just the right colors, to give the eyes a place to rest in the process of taking in the intensity of colors in the solid borders and the printed stars so that each aspect could be appreciated for its individual beauty. Then, when I saw how you choose to create the pieced strips from the leftover printed fabric, and placed them on the outside border and also ingeniously inserted another pieced strip with the completely different softer print chosen as backing...I truly wanted to stand up a cheer. These choices showed how so many gorgeous fabrics in a dynamic design could be brought together in a balanced, cohesive and totally unique way. You really are a brilliant designer and a meticulous artist that creates truly beautiful quilted works of art. I was grateful when you took the time to show us how you had made the strips used on the front and back, and surprised that when the quilt was completed our quilting lesson was still upper most in your mind. I learned so much tonight and there were times when I was on the edge of my seat...feeling a tad tense hoping it would all work out. And, as always, you showed how easy intricate, detailed work can be accomplished while still
being able to make the quilt realize its
full potential. Donna, you are a Rock Star in the World of Quilting. I hope you
keep this quilt for yourself to enjoy! I really do not know how you can give any of your beautiful quilts away. I believe we all feel the loving, generous, encouragement being given to all of your subscribers/students/patrons with each quilt you give. I am sure that each person who receives your gifted
quilt cherishes your kindness and this beautiful work of art. Thank you for all
you do to help bring such joyful creativity into our own lives and in this
way help us follow your example and
pass along the love that comes with every quilt, runner, pillow, frog, tree skirt...made. Sincerely, Anita
P.S. I haven't forgot your husband Matt, your Son the photographer and all of the hard working Angels that are Jordan Fabrics. I am grateful to each of
you for making your company and your channel work so beautifully and provide the platform for such important and love to being shared. ❤❤

I quite often pick my fabrics first and then hunt for a pattern however, I also have several patterns with me when I shop for fabric. I agree with Rhonda's reply whole-heartily; couldn't have said it better. It irritates me when I'm told I 'have to have' a particular ruler to make a pattern. Donna will show you what both rulers can do and let you decide which is best for you, which I respect and I will happily support Jordan Fabrics.

This video was one surprise after another! I wasn't excited with the pattern choice and even less excited about the jelly roll. I was horrified by the amount of waste and mentally shouted "NO WAY!" as fabric is far too expensive for that kind of trimming.

I'm the same way most of the time but, I've fell in love with the vintage looking quilts and most of them use the calico prints and they just don't look right without all the colors. You're right, they do look bright, happy and joyful, great description!

Using the white background really works here; it makes the blocks stand out. Like putting a large mat around a framed picture or photo. I’ve been purchasing only fat quarter bundles lately but I think a Kaffe Fassett roll is calling my name for this pattern. Thanks Donna! 😀

Another beautiful quilt by Miss Donna! I’m glad you switched out the setting triangles for the white color. To me it really makes the blocks pop. This video’s give away is incredible! Thanks for the opportunity to try to win. So very kind and generous of you.

I think watching Donna's tutorials makes me more efficient in terms of fabric purchase, because l get a sense of how much l'm going to need before l shop. Otherwise, it's fabric first and pattern second (which sometimes produces an "oops"). 😂

I've made projects both ways. Sometimes I already have the fabric, then look for an appropriate pattern. Other times I have a pattern I want to make, so I need to shop for the fabrics. I love how your quilt turned out. The blocks really pop!

Donna, I love the way you used those left over pieces for the border. It really pulled everything together nicely. I normally choose a fabric or precut that I like, and then have trouble figuring out what pattern to use! I'm just not very good at visualizing what fabric would look good in a particular pattern. After watching today's video I thought, "I wish I lived closer to your shop. I'm sure you would be a great help to me in putting things together." I love the way you walk us through the whole process. You are a great teacher and I love watching your videos. "Thank you" to you and Matt for being so generous in your giveaways.

I was shocked at the number of patterns you have in those file cabinets. I think I choose pattern first, and then I go to my stash to see if I can use something I already have. I was so excited tonight to find that you had posted a new quilt.

A Rock Star Quilt from a Rock Star teacher! Thank you for all that you and your team do to make us better quilters. I love how you use up extra fabrics in borders and in the backing. I have started to do this also as a result of watching you - I am not a fan of wasting fabric. Keep the videos coming - I think I might have to retire earlier than I planned to get all of my planned quilts done!!

What an excellent teacher DJ is!! I have learned so much from watching her over the last several years, I like the fact she’s always taught us to use the tools we have, that is very much appreciated for many of us. Speciality rulers and such are good to have, and I’m guilty of owning several, but once the quilt is made they go back in the drawer and sometimes never pulled back out, as their use is limited. As far as do I choose the pattern or the fabric first, I’m def a choose the pattern first lady. This is a pretty quilt that she’s made this week, I personally probably wouldn’t have chose it, but maybe now I will after seeing hers. Btw, Donna looks exceptionally pretty today dressed in fall purple plaid & I love the nail color! The $250.00 gift certificate, is very generous of Jordan Fabrics I hope whoever wins it truly needs it. I have entered but I never win anything, but someone will be very luck. Hope everyone has a truly blessed day.💕

As someone who has sewn since age seven, mostly on 1941 and 1960 Singers I appreciate that Donna can create such beauties without needing a sewing machine that’s like a spaceship! (But I must confess that I’m obsessed with Jenny Doan’s hydroplane style steam iron!)

I love fabric! Even years ago before I started sewing if I went in a quilting store I always came away with multiple beautiful fabrics I loved with no apparent plan! I love your videos, and just finished a huge King size quilt top for my bed. I went to the local quilt store today to discuss backing, batting, etc. and picked out the quilting pattern and thread. I am very excited! Thanks for all the great videos to help me learn more during the pandemic.

Sometimes I find fabric I just can't walk away from and then find a pattern to showcase the pattern. Other times, I find a great pattern and have to touch all of the fabric at a quilt store to find the perfect fabric for the pattern. Either way, beauty ensues!

Donna, you are my favorite teacher!! I spend hours at work listening to/watching your videos. I think I have downloaded every single one of your free patterns by now. I mostly pick out patterns first, then fabric. And I definitely go for more bold and bright colors rather than traditional colors. On the other hand, I have a ton of jelly rolls and charm packs that I have no plan for yet, so it's definitely 50/50 for me 😅

I really like the cheerfulness of the fabric choice for this quilt. I usually purchase my fabric because I like the fabric, on occasion I purchase fabric with project in mind, so I purchase all the supplies at once. When I was just learning to quilt I was told to buy fabric that speaks to you so that's what I still do... there is a very loud conversation happening in my sewing room everyday!!! On this quilt I like the pieced border but I truly like how you used the extra pieces to make the accent stripe on the backing, I have wanted to attempt that as I hate to throw away leftover pieces or store them for a future project that I never get to do.

Great job. Even though it looks like any other tutorial by Jordan Fabrics, one always learns something new. Only "negative" thing is that the videos are getting shorter and it's all over when we start to discover the final project. Once again congratulations on the master video editor. Cheers!

Good afternoon Donna and all the Jordan family, Love the design of this lovely quilt and i have just the fabric sitting behind me. Although i'm not that courageous in colour picking as you are flower, i have got Peter Rabbit summer fabric that i have been searching for a pattern for, for my baby granddaughters' granny Phee hugging quilt. I just loved the material when i seen it, but i have been stuck on the right pattern and i think i have now found it. I love to buy fat quarter bundles and metre bundles of fabric, so that i can have enough to make a twin bed size if not bigger and Peter Rabbit never goes out of date no matter the generation. Thank you for continuing to bring us Joy from Jordan's, i know that i am not the only one who would watch you video after video because of your style of teaching. You bring us beauty and reasoning, with a small dash of wonder in every video that you bring to us and we so very, very much appreciate all that you and Matt bring to our daily lives. Have a great week flower and crafty hugs being sent to you all, from Norah, Glenochil Village, Scotland

I always LOVE watching your quilting process from start to finish. Your selection of fabrics, pattern, and then quilting stitching is truly inspiring.
You make it look effortless, but I know from my limited expertise that you are incredibly talented. I would love to be within shopping distance as your store is stocked with such beautiful fabrics. My local shops never have so many gorgeous color choices of jelly rolls with coordinating yardage to complete the project. My dream space! Thank you for all the ‘tips’ you always throw in. Very helpful!
