I think a lot of people forget that the best percussion award also includes the front ensemble lol

It occurred to me this season that the front ensemble is the gen-x of DCI. Completely overlooked in every discussion.
The front ensemble is more important now than ever because of the removal of on field judges. The percussion judge has to stay on the front sideline the whole show. She he couldn’t be on the field following Bostons amazing Battery around. He got to watch Bloo’s incredible Front. I also think this can be attributed as to why Cavaliers finished ahead of Crown and Cadets in Percussion despite (imo) Crown and Cadets both having better Batteries. Cavaliers Front Ensemble is always stellar
As a wind player, I have no remote idea how percussion players are able to memorize so much more music. Jesus. I'm just in awe at every single line here.
Look at it the same way you memorize your own music but with more rhythmic focus than melodic. Ofc with the basses and tenors theres some of it but not nearly as much as brass or front ensemble. Also, some people may even listen for brass queues in the back of their head making memorizing easier, and we all have that magical muscle memory to help force it into our heads.
Think about stuffing a ton of winter clothes into your closet in spring and forcing it shut and not opening the closet till fall :) the college i marched did 5 shows every year. My brain hurts from so much music after 5 years of that.
It seems hard, which it is, but at the same time you have to remember that there is only a small range of different notes percussionists can play with dynamics and rudiments, but you winds can play octaves of different notes and different dynamics and rhythms, on top of most of your parts being slightly different from the people around you, and your approach having to be different. Percussionists are one giant section with pretty similar approach and usually quads book is just snare book but across the drums, so it’s not hard to keep up 😂
In drum corps drum lines rep their music hundreds of times each day
I marched baritone in high school, and then March Drumline, the rest of the time. Drumming is actually no more challenging than memorizing horn music. If anything, it’s easier because we have the hand combinations known as rudiments that we’ve played countless times, and Drumline music is nothing more than a giant mixture of those various rudiments. It’s like having a multitude of ingredients for a giant sandwich and making 300 different sandwiches different ways using the same ingredients.
Those cadet modulations always make me wanna scream YEEEEEEAH
The Bluecoats battery is still overlooked even after winning the sanford. They are playing a ton while moving, there book grooves but still is highly choppy throughout. I've seen the on field camera by Rbass tough drill. their zoining changes are the cleanest, those rolls up and down the snare are crispy

Hot take: give the front their own score and the drumline their own score, don’t combine them, and call it a day

I’m not sure I agree with this honestly, as it implies the concept that they aren’t the same section. Which they are. The Bluecoats line did amazing stuff no doubt, and it may be the best Coats line since ‘16, but I would say that their Front Ensemble performance in combination with the Drumline execution made the Bluecoats percussion section as a whole earn the coveted Sanford. The writing in the front ensemble had some genius interplay in combination with the battery moments, and there was that amazing percussion break where the vocal triggering up front was timed perfectly with the Battery Drum Break. And Bloo still writes and performs with more taste than pretty much everybody in DCI. But I think separating their scores would simply make everything more convoluted than it’s already started to be. Because the consensus needs to be that you can only have a successful DCI show if your percussion section is well oiled. A bad Drumline makes a bad Front Ensemble, and Vise Versa. In my opinion of course. I’m totally open to new ideas
You don't see separate scoring for high brass and low brass
@@tim.noonan i don't even think that take is too hot. Ever since the rule change ive been noticing it looks like judges want to go on the field, some even almost breaking the rule.
@@adumbusername1440 high brass and low brass arnt NEARLY as different from each other as battery and front are.
Everyone worked hard and the scores were earned not given. The Blue Devils has my vote as the most improved line. Credit the staff for building the program into another force to be reckoned with.

I heard all these lines in person at Semi finals lots. IMO, just battery alone not counting pit. interms of book difficulty, musicality, cleanliness and balance.

Honestly they're all good. My top 2 in my opinion was Boston Crusaders as number 2 and Santa Clara at number 1.

Only including top 7 is kinda weird IMO, like there were a lot of good drumlines that weren’t too 7 everyone In top 12 was really good this season
@@Bluntermocha Yeah, but also, they left out a lot of BAD drumlines, which i appreciate lmao. While i do wish i could watch myself be there on a "best of DCI" video, we were NOT deserving of that title lmao, especially looking at the other 2 groups we beat in score

Am i the only one who thinks bd should've been like 6th in drums? Cavies were WAY cleaner than them, and played a lot more notes as well.

Refer back to the days of drumheads not containing material that halfway play itself & complicated rhythms. Most of these rhythms aren’t complicated…refer to 1980’s…1970’s and earlier. One example is the 1987 Garfield Cadets drum line.
Well imagine playing with a much more dry and exposed sound while doing 4 times the amount of movement and still being just as clean

The 1st place group sounded more musical, interesting, and less stiff and concerned with the MACHO YEAH!!!! vibe.
