In 1978 and '79 I went down to the Vanguard and experienced Dexter Gordon. At first hearing it was an aural, visual and spiritual experience like no other - and has powerfully stayed with me since. As a saxophone player I learned more those nights than I would during years of music schools. As a man I absorbed more those nights than I would cumulatively for years to come. There is always a loss had when so much time passes and then we get something like we have here. Tragically the same is being mirrored in the rest of life......however, the torch has been passed to current generations that are unaware of what they've missed.
