    Photo Station and Moments are being replaced by Synology Photos with DSM 7, so probably not the best time to be talking about it xD Then again, Synology has said that there will be a migration path, so not really a problem.

    I may be wrong but photo station and moments are replaced in dsm7. Also you want to be frustrated accidently merge two people together. You can't fix that or undo. I don't use the standard synology file tree and work out of a single folder, pretty difficult if not impossible to use your moments pointed at that directory.

    This will change to Synology Photos with DSM 7, and it could be interesting to update to DSM 7 Beta bevor starting with your new Photo Hosting project.

  • @MikeMcGrath
    @MikeMcGrath 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    A Key point for this is it does not include photos taken with pixel phones or even old ones from nexus phones they still don't count towards your storage limit and are free. Google actually answered my angry email about the fact they advertise free highest quality storage for photos taken with pixel phones and told me nothing will change with pixel photos. Just an FYI

  • @jasonluong3862
    @jasonluong3862 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Synology’s incoming Disk Station Manager 7, Moments will be deprecated in favor of Synology Photos. So if you plan to migrate your Google Photos to Synology, it’s best to hold off until DSM7. Having a cloud backup is critical for not just photos and home videos, so nothing is wrong with paying Google or some vendor for this service. Alternatively, you can put in some work and back up to the “cloud” which is another NAS located at someone’s else home.

    • @DJaquithFL
      @DJaquithFL 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We also have everything backed up via a home NAS, and while it backs things up it (most of the time) pretty much sucks otherwise. Also nothing that's Synology can produce is a safe as anything Google can produce. If your Synology is open to outside your network you're kidding yourself if you think it's as secure as Google.

    • @Noodles.FreeUkraine
      @Noodles.FreeUkraine 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DJaquithFL You can always trade privacy for safety. It's just not everybody's cup of tea. Your Synology will be as safe as the environment and circumstances it's used in. That's not up to the device at all.

    For me the Photo Station app stopped working at some point and just keeps throwing errors at me no matter if I uninstall and reinstall it. Haven't looked into it for months anymore since I didn't even use it, but from what I still know almost nobody had that same error as I did.

    Great video. Synology makes great products but it isn't always suitable for new users. For instance my system got stuck generating thumbnails for moments after i moved too many files. You need to be able to get to the command line to fix this, which isn't ideal for new users. Hopefully this is fixed in DSM 7.0.

    Hey Tom. I looked at this when Google first announced this change. I couldn't find an easy way to get files off of Google photos and in to Synology moments. You can only download a handful of photos at a time (100 odd). Which means for 4-5 years of photos a pain in the arse.

      I’ve been testing out PhotoPrism recently.
      I run it as a container on my Ubuntu Server. I think it could run on a Pi but not sure how well. Fully open source.
      One thing I really like about it is you don’t actually have to “import” all your photos into the App. You can simply point the app to a network share where your photos are located and also (if you wish) set it as read only so that it has no ability to delete/modify your photos.
      It stores all the data it needs in a separate directory from your “originals”

    • @awstott

      @AstroCat I was more wanting the leverage the AI stuff - hopefully. I already use Lightroom, but I was shooting RAW before I started using Lightroom and a bunch of my stuff isn't tagged, and it's all stored in folders by date shot, so not ideal when you're looking for something.

    My only gripe with this review is the fact that you keep mentioning that because you're hosting the photos yourself it's a bit more private which it is until you enable quick connect. Quick connect is not privacy focus. You are sharing your data your information about your Nas with Synology. I feel that's an important point you should harp on is that when you use quick connect you are giving up privacy

    • @LAWRENCESYSTEMS
      @LAWRENCESYSTEMS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Except that's not true, having a quick connect does not give Synology any type of direct access to your photos. It only creates a connection so it can be with proper username and password access externally.
