Hey, so I'm a PhD student of Gothic Studies, and let me tell you, The Castle of Otranto doesn't even scratch the surface of how wild early Gothic literature gets. I recommend checking out Ann Radcliffe's books (the undisputed QUEEN of 18th century Gothic), The Monk by Matthew Lewis, and Mandeville by William Godwin (Mary Shelley's dad).

Thanks so much for the recommendations! I'll definitely have to check these out.

Ann Radcliffe's books and the Monk were both mentioned in Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen

I read this a while back when I was reading early horror. I think the giant helmet was supposed to be scary, which really shows how horror changed over time!

Im writing an essay about the origins of horror coming from gothic literature. Researching for it introduced me to this book for the first time and i havent gotten a chance to read it yet, so this video is quite helpful to me (and this was posted on my birthday!! Woah!)

One of my favorite bands, Rorcal, has an upcoming album that's using this cover art as the art for the album lol. Their last album was based on a book too, now I feel like I gotta read this!

Hi! I just found your channel and have been addicted and binging all of your videos, lol! I saw in an older video that you responded to a comment about The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson saying you just bought it and are planning to read it soon. I was wondering if you ever got around to reading it and if so, if there’s a video in which you talk about your opinions on it? I would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks :)

Thank you for watching! I did end up reading it. I think I only talked about it in a reading wrap up video but I'm not sure which month that was for. Controversial opinion but I prefer We Have Always Lived in the Castle over The Haunting of Hill House.

You should read Venus in Furs by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. It's about a dominatrix and is an erotic novella from 1870. The awesome Velvet Underground song, "Venus in Furs," is based on it.

Regarding: "in this older books people fell in love with just see each other one time".
Basically it used to be that way, considering most guys died before 40s it was fairly common that in their 14s-15s they will just have their first sexual partner.
There wasn't a necessity of knowing each other since in accient times, it was less social division; there were only the royalties and the peasants. And all people looked pretty much the same so who actually cared ? No one 😂
