I grew up in Hamlet during the 50's & 60's. Pretty much everyone in town either worked for the railroad or sold services to railroad families. My Dad was a diesel machinist, my uncle worked in the wheel shop, and my Granddaddy was a carpenter. Hamlet was a small town but a big railroad center. The Seaboard Air Line's logo had a heart with "Through the Heart of the South" on it; Hamlet was called the hub because it had rail lines radiating like spokes. After the mergers started with Atlantic Coast Line, & eventually with Chessie (to form CSX), the number of jobs dropped each time & now Hamlet is a shadow of its former self.
