  • Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy brought so many great J.R.R. Tolkien characters to life on the big screen. Aragorn, Legolas, Gandalf, and Gimli are now some of the most beloved characters in the fantasy adventure genre.
The films also made Viggo Mortenson and Orlando Bloom into major stars. Indeed, The Lord of The Rings assembled a fine cast of actors that included the talents of Cate Blanchett, Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, and Christopher Lee.
But there were also actors who turned down the opportunity to play some of literature’s most famous roles. From a former James Bond to one of Hollywood's great method men, here are actors who refused roles in The Lord of The Rings.

Young people have to understand that even though the books were considered one of the best literature of the 20th century and had an enormous fanbase, the three movie production was still a massive risk by then. Some actors understandably didn't want to risk their careers. Also a commitment to a three years of shooting schedule (reshootings included) means you can't get another work during that time and if the movies had failed a three years long gap with nothing but a financialy disastrous franchise would be a definite career killer for an actor. Thankfully all things did go great.
Also don't joke about Nicolas Cage's involment. He was a respected actor with a great indie movie career back then. He won an oscar and starred in three great blockbuster action movies back to back. Nic Cage became one of the best movie stars in the 90s. But after his ridiculous spendings he sunk into a massive tax debt. At 2000s he took almost every role that comes his way to pay his debt and that's what ruined his career and image.

In many ways the Lord of the Rings is about the story and the overall world its set in. Casting a big name actor at their peak like some of these were would have made it all about them.

PS: Nicholas Cage as Aragorn? That would have literally ruined the entire trilogy...I shudder at the thought!

      * **For those who don’t know, an explanation: Tolkien meant for The Lord of the Rings to be one physical book, internally divided into six ‘books’. The publisher split it into three physical books (because profit), so The Return of the King for example consists of books five and six.***
I regularly listen to the audiobooks (read by Rob Inglis) and they tend to be a bit boring at points. I often skip the entire book four, which is only about Frodo, Sam, and Gollum, and sometimes I also skip their chapters in book six. The three chapters with Tom Bombadil are also not very good, and many chapters of the fifth and sixth book are a bit gloomy and too grand in scale. It’s also difficult with the books to get a good grasp of what happens in the major battles. Thinking of the films helps.
My favourite chapters are those with lots of useful exposition (The Shadow of the Past, A Conspiracy Unmasked, The Council of Elrond, Treebeard, The White Rider, Flotsam and Jetsam) and the chapters where there is a good sense of friendship and/or new adventure, for example the Hobbits leaving the Shire, talking in Frodo’s new home, meeting farmer Maggot, and going to Bree. Also Merry and Pippin meeting Treebeard, Pippin meeting Beregond and Bergil, friends reuniting in Flotsam and Jetsam.
I understand that the chapters with Frodo, Sam, and Gollum are important for the story, but Tolkien should have put those chapters in between other characters’ chapters, instead of bundling them all into one book. The best chapter is the bittersweet last one: Tolkien’s language there is so perfect and every sentence is important.
The films are awesome... my favourite films of all time. But knowing the books so well it feels as if the films are a really short summary of them. It’s all so rushed. I hope some day The Lord of the Rings will be made into a long tv-series; more faithful to the book. Animated instead of live action would be fine.
Conclusion: The book is pretty awesome, especially book 1, 2, and 3. But book 4 is a drag and 5 and 6 are not exactly perfect.
While the book is too long at times, the films are just way too short (for me; they were of course perfect for the general public). But I can appreciate most of the decisions they made to streamline things, leaving out characters such as Fatty, Maggot, Tom, Beregond, Quickbeam, and Glorfindel. A film can’t have the same amount of characters as a book. Weird thing is that at the same time the books lack a lot of background information that would help in appreciating the scale of Tolkien’s world and story; about Melkor, elves, the gods, Numenor, etc.

For me, LOTR trilogy was great in particular for the fact that at the age I got into it, the actors were not well known to me.
These days, when I watch a movie, the actor's "gravitas" can make me forget about what is going on. That it be the story, the character's evolving arc or the way they act.
    For example;
I remember a movie, but not it's name. I know "Something(Adrien, now that I think of it) Brody" played one of the main roles. I know the guy who acted as young Anakin Skywalker, was the main role. Some money heist, family trauma ...
But I can't remember the name of the movie. And it had no impact on me.
You don't just make a great movie by buying a superstar.
And Viggo in LOTR has one scene which for me, sells him as an amazing actor.
When he learns the hobbits(Merry-Pippin) are taken by the orcs and might be dead, he kicks a orc's helmet.
He actually broke a toe but kept doing the scene.
And it is one of these scene where the actor becomes the character.

So glad that these attempts by New Line to dial in these Hollywood A List topping blockbuster star names failed.
Allowing Wingnut and Peter Jackson to work with a final cast of unpretentious actors, all giving their imaginative best to realise those rôles.
That is why these series struck gold! I would be interested in whether the casting team for the Hobbit were given more of a free hand to cast the actors they imagined to fill the rôles.

It is fitting that Sean Connery would appear first on this list. He is probably the most well known person to refuse a role in this movie. Until now, not many people knew that he refused the role of Gandoff for not understanding it. He also turned down the Matrix for the same reason.
