How Elijah Wood Pulled Off A Hollywood Miracle

  • Like most young actors that strike gold and catch the break of a life time, when Elijah Wood was wrapping up his time as Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, there were many roads he could have taken. Not wanting to be soley thought of as Frodo Baggins, Elijah Wood set out and crafted one of the more interesting careers in Hollywood. Never forgetting his roots in Lord of the Rings, Elijah Wood wanted to create new, weird, and interesting works that showed he was capable of a wide range of characters and stories. A big project like Lord of the Rings might ave been it for most up and coming actors, but Frodo had other plans.

      He's a great actor but he was miscast as Frodo, with this sad, forlorn vibe. Frodo is supposed to be cheerful and perky, not brooding and morose.

    • @jonlemmon5837
      @jonlemmon5837 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +50

      he balanced the movie well. a cheerful and perky protagonist doesnt work for a major motion picture. He strung along the burdensome narrative perfectly if you ask me. Same thing was done to Legolas in comparison to his book-personality, and Gimli as well. It just works in the film medium@@ErikBramsen

      @@ErikBramsen I'd say that it was more the scripts/direction than the actor's fault. I think he was great for Frodo because of his expressiveness, and Frodo is a difficult character to pull off in live action because most of his conflicts are internal ones. The problem is that the scripts gave him little more than sad/contemplative moments. But in those he was perfect. His performance in Mount Doom, when you can see his expressions changing from effort to let the Ring go to desire is just incredible.

      @@ErikBramsenWe see him be very cheerful in the early scenes in The Shire, so we know he wasn’t miscast. It’s only after he starts going on his adventure that he becomes more serious and sad. And that’s definitely the mood that Peter Jackson wanted to convey, and not really Wood himself.

    Folks tend not to remember but it’s an understatement to say the LotR fandom was uneasy when Elijah Wood was cast as Frodo. Really, at best it was questioned whether he was up to playing a central role and at worst was not respected. I followed the making of the films obsessively at the time from the moment the rumors first came out that the books were being adapted.
    All I can say is the turnaround was absolutely remarkable, with fans gradually starting to hear that Elijah was a reader of the books and then that he was so committed to getting the part that he created some kind of professional audition tape. Then the first film came out and from then on his acting journey has gone into legend. He is really beloved by the community.

      One of my favorite stories from his child-acting days was how he ended up presenting an Oscar at the Academy Awards show in the mid-‘90s. Originally, it was Macaulay Culkin, but his dad Kit called the showrunners a week beforehand and demanded a significant pay raise over the standard basic rate. They told him to f-k off, then called Elijah’s mom. She told them to send over his lines, and had him at the dress rehearsal where he nailed the delivery, as he later did on camera. The next day, the story was all over Hollywood, and both Elijah and his mom had earned a lot of respect in that town overnight for their sheer professionalism.

    I'm of the fortunate few who was introduced early to Elijah as a child when I was only a few years younger than he in the Good Son. The movie freaked me out as an 8 year old, but there was a sincerity and grounded believability in his portrayal that really opened my young eyes to what good acting might look like even from a young age. I am tremendously happy to see he not only grew to a successful actor, but maintained and honed his passion enough to rocket into superstardom with LOTR and well beyond. Hope to one day shake his hand

    I think something that made Elijah be able to "escape" being type casted for his work on LOTR is that he never shied away from them. He loves Lord Of The Rings. He goes to a lot of the conventions. He embraces his work is Frodo. And I think because of that, it's a loud him to pick up other work. Instead of hating on it or despising it if it has anything to do with fantasy or medieval. On top of just being a great actor.

    There are many reasons that the LotR trilogy has been one of the biggest successes in pop culture history. But a huge amount of this was due to the phenomenal levels of work that the actors had to go through. Many of the actors were injured during shooting. Some really badly. Yet they just shrugged it off and went right back to work after first aid was applied. Compare that to some of the so-called "actors" in The Rings of Power, who couldn't stand the slightest hardship. One of them actually needed emotional therapy after filming a fight scene. Give me a frickin' break. So, yeah. the entire cast of LotR was absolutely incredible. I'm not surprised that Wood has made such a career for himself. Good on him. And I thank him for giving us such a good performance in his movies.

Actualy McKellen, Holm and Wood were the first whose movies I searched for a lot becouse I remembered McKellen and Holm from older movies long before LOTR, and Wood and Astin was another part of my searching - some of those movies I already seen of course like some of Lee, Mortenssen and Holm movies but never remembered the names of the actors and I begun recognising those names only after they were in LOTR.

  • @momoneylessproblems9183

    The problem with why we associate Wood with Frodo is because of the sheer size of LOTR. Wood hasnt undertaken a blockbuster role since then. Its just indie films. If he decides to ever take on another blockbuster role (although his acting style and physical presence doesnt exactly make him a front-man) or if he performs in such a way that it receives widespread and mainstream critical acclaim he could distance himself from Frodo in a pretty meaningful way. But until that happens he will undeniably be most known for playing Frodo
