Geoff was and still a great inspiration. Much missed. He really helped and guided me with my first garden in the early nineties and his books continue to keep me on track.
Geoff H. was a master gardener. Gardening is not about going down the garden center and popping a flat of annuals in the backyard. It is about experimenting, studying and enjoying the hard work that brings your Garden to it's Glory. Taking a pile of old pipes, a can of paint and building a Rose arbor at the gate's enterance, then sitting under it enjoying your morning coffee while taking in the fragrances, colors and song birds of what you created. Inspiration, is what master Gardener Geoff Hamilton brought to viewers, fans and fellow gardeners. God Bless.
I was born 1982 and Geoff was my first gardening inspiration and I was so so sad when he passed. Such nostalgia hearing the old theme tune. Miss this show as it was.
I've paid my tribute to Geoff on another page--but I'd also like to say--what a joy it was to hear once again, that original and fantastic theme music, as played throughout the 1990's. Why oh Why does the BBC bugger up favourite shows in this way , when the loyal millions who watched , are disregarded in this way. Theme tunes identify with the success of ANY good prog.
Me too. I'd have never seen this where it not for the scheduling, and I love that divine acoustic and the gentle nature. It will never be recaptured, this was Geoff's show, a time we all enjoyed whether we were devoted fans or not
Watching this again after a gap of many years it occured to me just how good a communicator Geoff was. I first got interested in gardening thanks to him and GW hasn't been the same since. Sorry, Alan!
Geoff was the last of the 'real' gardeners on GW. He appealed to everyone. Since then, it's been well-healed presenters all desperate to become 'celebrities' with little idea of how much the ordinary person can afford. There used to be another very good gardening programme on Channel 4 around the same time. I think Roy Lancaster presented it. That was very good too, anyone remember the name of it? Had a feeling it was something like Gardening Club...
His death was one of those shocking events, that most people will remember where they were at the time. It was a Sunday, early evening, that the announcement was on the 6.00 pm news. Geoff had been taking part in a charity cycling event in South Wales, and suffered a heart attack. Of all people--a man who lived a active healthy out-door life. Ate organic food, always trim figured, it made no sense at all. Then again--Monte Don suffered a stroke. He is the one Gardener who came close to Geoffs down to earth style, also an organic food grower.
Another generation on - I have several of Geoff's books bought in charity shops - & fantastic they are. He is helping to turn me into a proper gardener! Titchmarsh at the start - oh the semi-faux (being charitable here), sincerity as he rubs his hands together & plots taking over the world. Sadly his evil plan is succeeding - even supplanting the no longer to be found Hessayon books at my local garden centre. The horror. Can I go nowhere without Titch merchandise & his gurning visage smirking at me? Not a patch on the realness of Geoff...
+Talentedtadpole Have to agree with you here, I've never liked Alan Titchmarsh, or found him remotely sincere. He always seems to be playing the role of the 'jolly yorkshireman', but never actually comes across as a real person. I remember Geoff and it always felt like he was there in your living room, showing you round his garden or greenhouse with infectious enthusiasm and he was just himself, never any sort of media personality.
I an not a true gardener myself, , I'm too lazy, but I did stay home every Friday to watch the program. I hardly watch TV today, too slow, way too many commercials, but when I do. it's always the good old Beeb.
I have lovely memories of watching Geoff Hamilton with my grandparents on Fridays when I was a child.
i have made my living from gardening for the past 15yrs thanks to watching geoff hamilton, he is very much missed.
